  1. Let's get things started with our daily review, including a Wisconsin road game that thankfully the Appleton fans weren't directly subjected to. It was a day of high high's and low low's in the system, to be sure. Transactions: Milwaukee Brewers traded RHP Thyago Vieira and RHP Aneuris Rodriguez to Baltimore Orioles for RHP Garrett Stallings (Stallings assigned to Nashville). Nashville Sounds activated 2B Patrick Dorrian from the 7-day injured list (Dorrian will look for a fresh start to his 2024, 6-for-68 thus far, coming off a useful .778 OPS with the Sounds last year) The Brewers dipped into their deep reserve of "Rodriguez" talent, reducing the Rodriguez level from eleven to ten players. As the player page linked above indicates, Aneuris is a Dominican native who will be turning 20 years old in June. Rodriguez signed in March of 2022, and thus was a post-batch addition from the traditional large pool of international signees. He's been effective enough through two Dominican Summer League campaigns, including a good number of starting assignments. His strikeout pitch is working in this spring's stateside debut. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Charlotte (White Sox) 3 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Roller's Walk-Off Homer Gives Sounds Fifth Straight Win Over Charlotte - Outfielder’s two-run blast in ninth inning gives Nashville 5-3 decision in thriller Let's start with the ending - Supplementing the fine game summary you just read, the Nashville "X" feed includes Aaron Ashby and the obligatory (and welcome) Brewer Hicklen highlights. Progress made here for Ashby, the key will be what comes next, can consistency and further improvement follow? Abner Uribe's box score line looks fine on the surface, but thanks to our forum contributor wiguy94 we learn it wasn't an ideal outing. Just keep plugging Tyler Black in at first base day in, day out, grow those defensive repetitions. Can we see Black being moved at the deadline for pitching? Does he have a long-term home with the big-league Crew? Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Birmingham (White Sox) 7, Biloxi 1 Box Score and Game Log Beach Chicken Debut Spoiled by Barons - Biloxi’s bullpen allows one run over six innings, Boeve tallies multi-hit effort When I started this gig in 2001, little did I think I'd by typing "Beach Chickens" at any point. The amazing seagull-themed logo was certainly the highlight of Biloxi's night. The Shuckers scraped out four singles and two walks. One looks at the bottom of the Biloxi order in particular (Yerzy, Sparks, Acosta) and sighs, but Ethan Murray and Zavier Warren weren't tantalizing production as bench options Saturday, either. For starter TJ Shook, this awesome May 7th outing seems so long ago. LH middle reliever Russell Smith tossed three hitless/scoreless (three walks, one HBP), and RH closer Justin Yeager, getting work in, allowed three singles in the 9th but pitched his way out of it. The flip-flops, the umbrella beverage, the color palette, thank you, kind Beach Chicken, for wonderfully distracting us from recent results on the field. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: South Bend (Cubs) 6, Wisconsin 1 Box Score and Game Log South Bend’s Big Second Inning Beats Wisconsin - Cubs top Rattlers 13-1 to clinch series The 27-17 Timber Rattlers have earned the right to have the occasional super-clunker. This qualifies. Similar to the Shuckers game, relievers' efforts made the box score review less ugly. First baseman Tayden Hall's bump to High-A is not off to a flying start - 7-for-47 (one double). Seven walks vs. nine K's show us that BABIP is in play. It was .463 with Carolina to start the year and it's .179 with the T-Rats. Shake it off, Tayden (and the T-Rats after this one). Final: Carolina 4, Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 3 Box Score and Game Log Hot Start Lifts Mudcats Past Pelicans Thank you Mudcats, for offsetting some of the Cub-related pain from South Bend this week as noted above. If the game log descriptions are to be believed from Zebulon, then that four-run Carolina first inning must have really been something, check it out to see the words "line drive" or "lined out" peppered throughout. 21-year-old RHP Yorman Galindez has made seven starts in 2024, and only one was off-putting (May 11th - 3.1 IP, 4 R, 4 BB's). Galindez now sports a 3.16 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 42 K's in 25.2 innings. This got me going, I was dragging there for a bit: 18-year-old Juan Baez (yes, Baez will be 19 in June, but did we forget that he's only been 18?) was 4-for-4 with a double. That gave the antsy $10,000 signing plenty of time to experiment on the basepaths as only Baez can. He netted both his 7th successful steal and his 9th not-so-successful attempt. In 171 plate appearances Baez has walked only 11 times, just 6.4%. But wait, he has only struck out 11 times, and I don't have to calculate that percentage for you! There's no one quite like Baez in the system. He is thoroughly fascinating and entertaining, not to mention eminently productive. Did I mention he's still just 18 years old? ACL Padres 9, ACL Brewers 5, seven innings as scheduled Box Score and Game Log This was an early game in the desert, and it gave my co-worker Daniel a chance to chime in on the video-free, audio-free, gameday developments via our forum, which I'll share verbatim here: The ACL Brewers and ACL Padres are squaring off for the 2nd straight day, with the Brewers still (apparently) having only one healthy position player on the bench (Alastre yesterday, Lameda today). CF Antony Gomez has homered for a 2nd straight day. Well done to him. RHP Felipe de los Santos and his incoming 23.63 ERA got the start. But 3 ER in 1.2 IP actually lowered his season ERA (heaven help us). 21-year-old RHP Dencer Geraldo made his stateside debut and first game action since June 10 last year: 3 ER in 0.1 IP. Gulp. We’ve hit 6 Padres by HBPs. Oh my. We’re actually out-hitting them (the singles, doubles, triples, homers type) 5-to-3, but trail 8-to-4. RF Gery Holguin has 3 singles to lift his average to .220. He was also picked off. Yes, our opponents have 8 runs on 3 hits. And now 1B Johan Barrios has homered, giving him 3 in 2 days. I’m guessing he was dealing with some sort of injury to start this ACL season, as his playing time was oddly limited. The ACL games yesterday and today are both 7-inning affairs, by the way. We trail 8-5 in the top of the 6th inning. NOTE: It was a 1-2-3 final frame in the 7th for the now 6-10 A-Crew. It's a traditional four-pack of games Sunday. Those naughty South Bend Cubs have scheduled a 6:00 PM Central game to prevent the Timber Rattlers from getting a head start on their return home for Tuesday action. That does give you the opportunity to check out Chris Mehring's call this evening after the parent club completes the Fenway sweep. All the various game times can be found at the link below, it's late afternoon action in Nashville and Biloxi as well. Have you had enough of yours truly this week? I hope not, because the overtime is in high gear, and I'll be back for your Monday AM holiday review. Talk to you then and enjoy your Sunday! 8. Random thoughts last night after driving home from the Brewers - Red Sox William Contreras / Tim Dillard "Popcorn Game" (video): Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Did Bradley Blalock's family follow him from Houston to Miami, and perhaps even Boston, hoping to catch his MLB debut? They must have. Hopefully it will be even sweeter when the now-optioned-back-to-Biloxi 23-year-old eventually makes his formal debut down the road. Looking forward to Blalock's next pre-game interview with Javik Blake to hear about his somewhat phantom big-league stint. When versatile David Fry (catcher, corner infielder and outfielder) was traded to Cleveland as the PTBNL in March of 2022 by the Brewers for subsequently PED-disgraced reliever JC Mejia, it was more a fan sense of being happy for Fry among the minor league fandom, rather than lamenting his loss. The dude and his current 1.128 OPS (114 plate appearances) has him the toast of the town. Transactions: Milwaukee Brewers selected the contract of RHP Enoli Paredes from Nashville Sounds Milwaukee Brewers optioned RHP Bradley Blalock to Biloxi Shuckers Wisconsin Timber Rattlers activated RHP Logan Henderson from the 7-day injured list Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 4, Charlotte (White Sox) 3 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Erase Early Deficit, Take Fourth Straight Win - Chris Roller knocks go-ahead RBI double in Nashville’s 4-3 triumph over Charlotte A reminder that Carlos F. Rodriguez is 22 years old for all of this season (November 27th birthday), In his first six starts through the end of April, CFR walked 16 and struck out 19 in 24.2 innings. In four starts since the calendar turned to May, he has walked only five while racking up 29 K's in 23 innings. Ah yes, the sweet smell of development. RHP Taylor Clarke has just under five years of service time, and because he's under that cutoff, the Brewers were able to option him to AAA once his recent injury rehab stint (knee) concluded. He can't be thrilled with the current placement but pitched like he needed to here with two scoreless. Clarke was acquired from the Royals for INF Cam Devanney and RH reliever Ryan Brady, each are off to respectable but not gaudy starts with their new organization, as those player page links will attest. Several additional video clips (with sound, yay!) are available at the club's "X" feed. All nine players in the Sounds lineup reached base at least once, with sizzling Isaac Collins (back in a more customary left field with Chris Roller back on the AAA roster) leading the way, on base thrice. Biloxi Media Notes Final: Birmingham (White Sox) 7, Biloxi 2 Box Score and Game Log Barons Get Edge in Top-Flight Pitching Matchup, Shuckers Drop Game Four of Series - Wilken extends hit streak to five straight in loss, Miller makes history The Shuckers fall to 18-25, and we say thanks for the split minor league seasons. Biloxi managed just five hits, though at least three were for extra bases - as detailed at the link above, the Eric Brown, Jr. and Brock Wilken doubles and this: Three Shuckers errors didn't impress the impressive (for Biloxi) crowd of 3.356 (thank you, fireworks). In seven starts prior to Friday's Jacob Misiorowski had not allowed more than three hits in any outing (his game log). He was touched for eight hits and three walks in 4.1 here. The 1.39 WHIP on the season reflects the Mis' work, and sorry, I'm just not enthused as much as I probably should be. We allow ourselves to be dazzled by the video bytes. Mike Boeve is hitless in ten at-bats, and for a mere mortal, that wouldn't even have us blink twice. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: South Bend (Cubs) 6, Wisconsin 1 Box Score and Game Log Two-Out Rally Sinks Wisconsin in South Bend - Cubs plate five in third inning to beat Rattlers 6-1 RHP Logan Henderson is only 22 for all of 2024's season but based on how long we've been clamoring for his High-A debut, one could imagine that he's much older. After toying with Arizona rookie-level opponents in two tune-up outings (ten K's and no walks in 4.2 scoreless), Henderson's oblique is fine, and he was able to face ten batters Friday night. Commence our future excitement: Luke Adams had his say after being called out on strikes in the 6th - unfortunately, that got him an early shower. All six T-Rat hits were singles, and they were squeezed into the top four of the lineup, which did not include Luis Lara, still sidelined, but not on the IL, with his lacerated finger. KC Hunt's second Wisconsin appearance was fire! He now sports a 45-to-5 K-to-BB ratio in 26 innings. At least he's at a more appropriate level now, as Hunt was a man among boys with Carolina. This four-inning outing was his longest of the season, and he's gone three innings twice. Will we see another reliever moved to the rotation, a la Shane Smith in Biloxi? Final: Carolina 12, Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 4 Box Score and Game Log Big Inning Lifts Mudcats Past Pelicans Seventeen Muddies reached via hit, walk, and HBP. Carolina scored 12 runs on nine hits thanks to the Pelicans' generosity on defense. Though he was 0-for-2 on Friday (two walks and an HBP, however), corner outfielder and Phillies castoff Yhoswar Garcia is 2nd in batting average in the Carolina League, Cooper Pratt singled twice and added a sacrifice fly in a stint as the designated hitter. Yophery Rodriguez singled three times in what was his third multi-hit effort in the last four games. Clubbing five home runs on the season-to-date is cool, but this wasn't RF Luis Castillo's first extended admiration trot. When you're batting .180 with a sub-.600 OPS, one may wish to tone that down a bit. But glad you enjoyed it, Luis. Sorry for the old man "get off my lawn" comment. Among my fellow Link Reporters, we tend to be locked into specific days of the week to hone our craft (this week's overtime by yours truly an outlier), so we get to type about the same starting pitchers quite often, and I feel as though I've been locked into RHP Josh Knoth coverage all season. As the game logs show, 13 K's vs. two walks over seven innings in his most recent two outings are a positive, for sure. Eighteen years old until August, folks. Kudos to 23-year-old Mayor of Zebulon Jeferson Figueroa - yes, his 4th season with the Mudcats - on a super-pretty pitching line, as the box score indicated for you. ACL Brewers 15, ACL Padres 4, seven innings as scheduled Box Score and Game Log The A-Crew was the home team here, so the boys pumped 15 runs, 14 hits and six walks into just six turns at bat, all while hit machine Luiyin Alastre enjoyed a night off. The nice thing about this one was we had five video entries available, so get your fill of Eric Bitonti and Filippo Di Turi here. The amazing Di Turi was a home run shy of a cycle. Jackson walked the bases loaded but escaped with a scoreless final inning. 2023 14th round Louisiana high school pick RHP Hayden Robinson has been pretty solid in his four starts as his game log attests. Isn't it nice we're getting deep enough into the season, even the rookie-level season, that the game logs have a bit of relevance. $1,385,000. That was Johan Barrios' January 2022 signing bonus. No longer a shortstop but a corner infielder (and primarily a first baseman, it seems), this two home-run, six-RBI game was certainly a career highlight. The RH Venezuelan bat is just 19 years old for all of this season, but if limited to the cold corner, that bat is going to have to be very potent. Congrats to second-year pro (first year stateside) CF Antony Gomez on the occasion of his first professional home run. The recently-turned 18-year-old left-handed stick pulled it to right field. All five affiliates see action Saturday. Hope it's nice where you are, wish my Fenway weekend wasn't limited to just last night, but I'll be watching via the telly this afternoon. 16. The Timber Rattlers (27-14) and Mudcats (24-15) were both victorious on Wednesday. The Shuckers lost their 3rd consecutive game and are just 8-19 in their last 27 contests. When she decides to interject herself in the proceedings, Mother Nature is pretty much undefeated. As such, the Sounds (23-23) will play two Thursday to determine where they'll be relative to the .500 mark. The Maryvale lads enjoy Wednesdays off each week in addition to Sundays. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Let's dig into the most recent slate of games. Transactions: N/A Postponed: Charlotte (White Sox) at Nashville, rain Thursday's doubleheader will likely feature scheduled starters RHP's Chad Patrick and Carlos F. Rodriguez. MiLB lists the always capable "TBD" to team with Rodriguez, but unless the timing of the rain messed with Patrick's routine, we will see Patrick, the return from Oakland for infielder Abraham Toro, who has excelled for the Athletics this season. Patrick (3.19 ERA) has been a pleasant surprise himself. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes It'd be a shame to put Jeff Hem's Wednesday notes to waste, so catch up on all things Sounds at that link. VIDEO: Tell us what you really think, Jeff! Love the passion… Biloxi Media Notes Final: Birmingham (White Sox) 8, Biloxi 4, ten innings Box Score and Game Log Shuckers Drop Extra-Innings Slugfest to Barons - Teams combine for 12 runs, 24 hits, Martinez Jr. smashes team-leading fourth homer of the year The Biloxi offense is such that scoring three runs on nine hits within the regulation nine innings qualifies them as participating in a slugfest. Brock Wilken did double in addition to a single, so his slugging percentage in the small 19-game Biloxi sample did "rise" to .338, plenty of work to do there, but this may have been a start. Wilken's prior nine games did not produce a single extra-base hit. This one, however, was pretty clutch in the 8th: Also, Ernesto Martinez did this, so there's some slug for you as well: By the way, yes, we've confirmed that the Biloxi staff is still planning to get the CF camera view resolved. It's complicated. Biloxi's RISP: 2-for-13. Noah Campbell is the latest pre-game interviewee on the team's audio archive page. Justin Yeager had only allowed one run in his prior seven outings, so his misstep in the 10th with the ghost runner and beyond is not a major concern. RHP Shane Smith has 37 K's and seven walks in 25 innings, so this move to the rotation is very promising. Forty-five of 69 pitches for strikes in this one, nice. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: Wisconsin 4, South Bend (Cubs) 2 Box Score and Game Log Kuehner Ks Eight in Wisconsin Win - Rattlers beat Cubs 4-2 First, we had to learn that former Timber Rattler pitcher Tyler Woessner's last name is pronounced "Wayz-ner". Please be aware that southpaw Tate Kuehner's surname is pronounced "Keener". And the 23-year-old 2023 7th round pick out of Louisville was indeed "keen" in this one, as Chris Mehring very ably detailed in his writeup linked above. Inherited runners-scored: Costello 2-0; Yoho 1-0 So important in a tight game - well done, gents. Team RISP: 1-for-14. Team LOB: 12. Thankfully, South Bend fared poorly themselves, 1-for-6, LOB 7. Yesterday we quizzed you, identifying Eduarqui Fernandez as the club's OPS leader. Playing CF in this game, Fernandez tripled, singled, and walked. Completing our italicized copy-and-pastes from the box score: Att: 6,110. That's a lot of screaming kids for the early matinee, right Chris? Final: Carolina 14, Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 8 Box Score and Game Log Mudcats Soar Past Pelicans As noted at that link, things were knotted at 3-3 when runs aplenty scored in the softest, least slugfest ways imaginable. Don't get me totally wrong, the teams did combine for seven XBH's, four by Carolina. The Mudcats placed 28 men on base via hit, walk and HBP, impressive. Team RISP: 8-for-21. Team LOB: 12. That'll work. Daniel Guilarte is now 12-for-13 in SB attempts, he was 26-for-34 during his stay in Carolina in 2023. Guilarte singled thrice here. Cooper Pratt reached base five times. Guilarte, Juan Baez, and Reece Walling each reached on four occasions. Yophery Rodriguez and Yhoswar Garcia three times apiece, and we need to get them a tandem Yo-Yo advertising gig. Starter Daniel Corniel has avoided any blow-up starts in his seven efforts thus far. Only Brailin Rodriguez struggled, and special notation for Morris Austin's work, stranding two runners and closing things out in scoreless fashion. 17. Let's dig into the most recent slate of games.
