The depth of our candidates for "last man" makes me feel safer about the usual fluctuations in bullpen performance. Between Kintzler, McClendon, Merklinger, etc...we probably have a better situation in our bullpen than most teams.
I agree that it happens; but again it should not be planned on, mostly because of the increase in pitching quality and defensive abilities as you move up the minor league systems and the dramatic leap for both in the majors. For most of the catchers I've watched that were drafted by the brewers it seems like the bat was the first thing to go.
But its not something that should be expected. A good backup has to do at least one thing well, in my opinion. For our catchers i like Maldonado because he provides great defense. I also like Kotaras because i like his bat the best. I have no use for Nieves who seems to do nothing well except be a veteran.
I like the way Maddon's teams run in Tampa as a branch off the Scioscia tree....not liking the Scioscia tree itself though http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Hopefully Roenicke will go more in the Maddon direction.
I agree; that's just what I would do. If what Roenicke wants to do is give up as many outs as possible in front of Braun and Fielder maybe we should just stick Betancourt there, he'll probably make more outs than Gomez.
No kidding. It seems like the most obvious thing to ask coaches and player about. If he can play it, he could/should be the starter there this year! Anyone at BF have the pull to get someone on the phone to ask?
We'll pull this out again. Please lets not give one of our worst hitters more plate appearances than necessary. And while we're at it, lets not play small ball and give up outs in front of Braun, Fielder, Hart, McGehee.
I was a little disapointed that Provus made a joke about having no clue who Hunter Morris was the other day. Was he being sarcastic or does he not know the minor league system at all. That was something I loved about Powell.
Brendan Katin--rather him get that last spot than Kotsay (sucks) or Gamel (would rather he work on defense in the minors). We have enough lefties on the bench and Cruz is not much of a hitter.
I think a low cost deal to seal his arby years is fine just to add predictability to the payroll (and give him some injury protection). I'd actually rather not buy out any free agency with him.
I'm also assuming many of the people voting have no idea how to evaluate who had the better season. My guess is it would be something like whoever they got frustrated with less.
Well, the club and Gamel have had issues in the past and I'm sure someone would have told the history to Roenicke. Hopefully Roenicke has a more effective "get your stuff together" approach with Gamel rather than just alienating him.
Disagree on the contract. I think its just right. He'll be fairly compensated/underpaid if he stays healthy and performs. There is always risk in a long term deal. The difference between Hall and Weeks skills are immense. Re: Farris, its been asked about for months (since we got Betancourt) but can he play shortstop???
