  1. I too agree with Jwill, but, if you tell an offensive joke, it's no less offensive just because a majority of the audience didn't get it.
  2. Frankly, I don't know how I got this far without reading it. My point was simply this: what we know of the Holden Caulfield character, combined with the subject matter TK was talking about, combined with the term "fantasy". It all adds up to not sounding good. Dumb thing to say at best, at worst, he thought he'd get away with making a literary reference to a sports crowd. And to counter-act those who were saying he was suspended for ridiculing her clothes. I guarantee you the Holden Caulfield comment was what pushed it over the edge. He wasn't fired. He's not being sued. He said something dumb and he's getting a slap on the wrist for it.
  3. Or, Fortheloveofweeks, if you prefer, give your workplace appropriate definition of a "Holden Caufield Fantasy."
  4. How has the guy who never read the book become the interpretor for it? I can't say with any certainty what TK meant with the reference, but Holden Caulfield didn't spend time with trashy or inappropriate women. Well, except for the $$$*$#, who he didn't "do."I'm an English minor and managed a bookstore for two years - haven't read it but know a thing or two about it. Not to mention the quote from the summary I posted earlier. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that Holden Caufield is a symbol of sexual frustration...
  5. To put it bluntly, the "Holden Caufield fantasy"insinuation, in context, translates something like this: She's trashy and dresses inappropriately, but I'd still do her. There's not much ambiguous about that. Holden Caufield is a very, very specific reference. In no workplace I know of would that be acceptable. Not necessarily two weeks suspension, but certainly a good sit down and a stern talking to. It's not appropriate.
  6. Nice analogy. I'm forced to watch some of this red carpet stuff, and this group (including Joan) carve up people in great detail for how they look. While I don't think Tony K. should have been suspended for what he said, he also should have known better. I'm fairly confident he wasn't suspended for describing what she was wearing. Pretty sure it was the "Holden Caufield fantasy" comment that put it over the top.
  7. I'm admitting a sin: I've never read Catcher in the Rye, but I am aware if its sexual connotations and will probably pick it up in the wake of Mr. Salinger's death. The only part of the comment that could potentially be sexual harassment is the Holden Caufield comment. So, to figure out what Tony's potential context was, I did what any good student who hasn't read his homework would do: I checked Spark Notes, and it reads: "Moreover, he is disturbed by the fact that he is aroused by women whom he doesn’t respect or care for, like the blonde tourist he dances with in the Lavender Room, or like Sally Hayes, whom he refers to as “stupid” even as he arranges a date with her. Finally, he is disturbed by the fact that he is aroused by kinky sexual behavior—particularly behavior that isn’t respectful of one’s sex partner, such as spitting in one’s partner’s face. Although Holden refers to such behavior as “crumby,” he admits that it is pretty fun, although he doesn’t think that it should be." If this is what Tony meant by her being a "Holden Caufield fantasy", I have no problem with some time off.
  8. I'm gonna get knocked for this... While considered by most to be one hit wonders, I was one of the few people who remained a fan of Seven Mary Three over the years. They put out a couple of stellar albums AFTER American Standard and Rock Crown but no one noticed. Stopped trying to be 90s grunge band and just put out some good music. Last Tuesday they released an acoustic live record called BackBooth that is pretty great. Does NOT include Cumbersome (covered by every bar band in America), but does include Lucky, as well as the unrecorded track Don't Walk with the Devil and a cover of That's how Strong my Love Is.
  9. Frankly, I don't know how I've ran up 500+ posts. I think half were in the "Can Bill Hall Pitch?" thread. Here daily, post about monthly...
  10. Saw the video. Horrible. From a strict common sense point, how could that corner not have been protected? How could they leave large steel beams exposed like that. Going from 90mph to zero and being stopped by steel = sure death.
  11. On today's episode of The Way Back Machine, Jim Edmonds played for the California Angels. That seems ages ago.
  12. That Deep Dark Woods album is fantastic. Thanks for the recommendation. Will be getting more of their stuff...
  13. As the father of a four week old, I'd suggest this: 1: Our brother-in-law brought us food. Non-hospital food. That was awesome. 2: Diapers. Practical. Expensive (but not if you just buy a package or two). We love when people give us diapers.
  14. Just finished Philp Roth's The Humbling... it's about what you'd expect from Roth, but doesn't match up to his most recent fine work: Indignation and Everyman.
  15. Hey everyone: Part public service announcement/part shameless self promotion: There is this cool new website called Vodo.net, dedicated the helping independent filmmakers share their work with the masses. Part streaming site/part P2P/torrent platform - Vodo.net presents independent films you wouldn't see elsewhere to a wider audience. You can either become a member of the site (small fee) and stream the films directly from the site, or you can just download and share torrents from the site. All content is uploaded and shared with the consent of the filmmakers. There's a lot of interesting indie film from the last year or so up on the site, including my short film, The Wintress: www.vodo.net/thewintress. I'm up for consideration for a "Vodo Release", which means that they'd promote it actively on the site's home page. Take a look, in addition to my film, there might be some other stuff there you'd find interesting.

  17. I don't even know where to start, but let's try a top 10 list, in no particular order: No Country for Old Men There Will be Blood The Road Gladiator Shotgun Stories 4 Months, 3 weeks, 2 days The Assassination of JEsse James by the Coward Robert Ford Cinderella Man The Hurt Locker Narc
  18. Saying that LAdy GaGa "happened" is a good way to put it. She happened all over the place. Unthought Known, for the uninitiated: Patterson Hood, for the uninitiated:
  19. Molina & Johnson: Molina & Johnson Pearl Jam: Backspacer Magnolia Electric Co: Josephine Monsters of Folk Patterson Hood: Murdering Oscar Ben Nichols: LAst Pale Light in the West Favorite songs of the year: Pearl Jam: Unthought Known (seems almost like advice I might give to my daughter someday, daughter arrives sometime in next three weeks, chokes me up a bit) Molina & Johnson: Twenty Cycles to the Ground Pearl Jam: Force of Nature Rise Against: Savior Patterson Hood: Belvedere Magnolia Electric Co: Whip-poor-will Ben Harper: Shimmer & Shine Silversun Pickups: Panic Switch
  20. The whole deal with the asian nurse was, while predictable, very well executed. The show hasn't had a misstep yet...
  21. Count me amongst the addicts. I quit once for 6 weeks and, along with exercise and improved diet overall, dropped down to about 180.... but then you eventually get back on it, and become dependent on the caffeine again... so now I drink at least one 20-oz bottle a day. And I'm back up to hovering around 200. It just tastes so good. Kid on the way in December. Will not be introducing soda to the child.
  22. Doesn't appear she had anything to do with it: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091003/ap_on_re_us/us_espn_andrews_video
  23. Hey folks: If you're into film and looking for something to do this weekend, check out the Milwaukee Short Film Festival. My Short, The Wintress, plays at 2:30 on Saturday at the Lubar Auditorium in the Art Museum. http://www.milwaukeeindependentfilmsociety.org/ www.thewintress.com
  24. Luckily, the fires' westward progress has been stopped, otherwise we'd be in trouble (we live in Newhall, just west of where the fire is). It's shocking how big the fire is. The wind has shifted towards us, so it is orange with haze and I even noticed ash falling on us today. In reality, we are out of reach (the fire would have to jump a freeway - they aren't going to let that happen). My mom has called each day however to check on us. We just moved here from Glendale (where the fire started). Today I have to drive there and my entire drive will be bordered out my drivers' side window with the fire and haze...
  25. Did ya use the whizzinator? What product would Najeh Davenport endorse?
