  1. She's right... if a woman is screaming for help and telling passerbys to call 911, people should really just mind their own business. This is like political spin - they are saying something so absurd and just hoping that some people will agree/believe.
  2. Title changed, since Michael Barrett is on everyone's mind... Tom Barrett was released today. Extensive injuries requiring plastic surgery, a few teeth knocked out... http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/53477862.html
  3. Not a political thread - but just wow: http://www.jsonline.com/newswatch/53347442.html Mayor Barrett is a big guy. Not saying he is a match for a guy with a pipe, but jeez...
  4. If you are a Brewer Fan I will never understand how you can bash Selig. Be dissapointed with how he ran the team at times?..maybe. Selig brought baseball back to Milwaukee under impossible circumstances. He got a State of the Art stadium built in a hostile political climate full of people who have no vision of the future for Milwaukee. Without the new stadium, I'm convinced there is no MLB team (again, a team that he made possibe) in Milwaukee right now. Did he make a lot of money on the sale of the team because of Miller Park. Yes. So what? If you spend $100K a year in the 5 county area (which few people do), you are paying $100 a year for the opportunity to have a MLB team in your community. Mos people spend much less than that. Not a bad trade off, even if you are not a baseball fan, unless of course you prefer to live in a place similar Omaha or Des Moines. People that live in Milwaukee should be very grateful for some of the "bigger city" stuff we have in this town. Selig is very much responsible for part of that. My avatar is Selig because he is my all time favorite Brewer. Without him, I would not be going to the game tonight with my son. +1 I have been a Selig apologist all my life. Unfortunately, too many people take the "what have you done for me lately" tact. They forget that without Bud Selig there is no Milwaukee Brewers. Period. I think they see a frail, awkward old looking man with goofy glasses and a bad comb over and decide that he must be a doofus. I haven't always agreed with Selig, but I'm thankful for what he means to baseball in Milwaukee.
  5. Now we just need to get Ray King back (again) and the inspiration for my moniker will be complete once more: http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c247/elvermanwrites/tgrill0304.jpg
  6. No, I'm, saying that people have to do that, I'm simply saying that people sometimes say sensational things when they don't have to worry about any repercussions on their true name or character.
  7. Yeah, my Dodger friend had the same reaction. When he picked up the phone I was swearing immediately. He mistook it as jealousy on my behalf and assumed that the Dodgers had picked up Halladay. It felt good to inform him that no, that had not occurred. I said nice things about Rottino, though...
  8. I just got off the phone after a profanity-laced rant with a Dodgers-fan friend of mine. It didn't help. BTW, Claudio has a new middle name, and it begins with F. Seriously, say it out loud to yourself, it sounds good....
  9. (I may be a little more amped about this because I just found out we're having a girl... I've always been respectful of women, but man, it all takes on new meaning when you realize you're bringing a girl into this world. I didn't have a sister, so this is all new to me). The point being: What in her character or past actions indicates that she is the type of person who would stage something like this to further her career? Don't we owe a woman who says her rights have been violated the benefit of the doubt until the evidence proves otherwise? It seems like people are too quick to pull the misogynistic/women-as-objects/she's doing this to further her career position. And really, you think she filmed it and it got out there accidentally? WHAT? Come on, if you're going totake the time to make a nudie tape, make a real nudie tape. Not one of you putting on makeup from 20 feet across a hotel room. I'll come on this board and apologize to everyone who says otherwise if I'm proved wrong, but for right now, she is a woman whose rights have been violated and nothing else. We've become too cynical.
  10. Uh... she got lawyers involved because her privacy and rights were violated. As any self respecting person would do. As I said earlier, it seems to me that she brought up the naked video thing as a reason for probable cause as to why she would suspect a car is suspicious. Produce your evidence that points to her pushing this to further her fame. It hasn't been too bad here, but other sites where comments aren't monitored for ludicrous responses overwhelmingly have guys saying "oh, she staged it, it's fake, it's for publicity, she wants it, etc." Yet I have not heard one bit of evidence to point to that. I think it is a sign of misogyny in the sports world that people don't believe her. And it's proving that there are a lot of idiots out there. It's apparently hard for some ignorant males out there to realize she's not Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian. "Oh, she must have wanted to be filmed naked, that's the only way this happens." Right now, the evidence points overwhelmingly to her rights being violated and her being a victim. I have seen nothing to point to the contrary except idiots with the anonymity of the Web saying it.
  11. Kinda related: I'm not a huge documentary fan, but as a fan of fighting, I was floored by this documentary: Fight or Flight Extended trailer: That's a pretty good taste. I spent some time with the director at a festival earlier this year - great guy, totally unassuming, not the type of guy you'd expect to go do what he does here. For fight fans, it's a fantastic film.
  12. If you called 911, would you give the reason why you had probable cause to think this was something weird beyond just a car parked in front of your house? That seems to be what she did. Does her answer to the question make sense? No, but I imagine one could be freaked out in that situation and just throw out all of the information at once. What's next? People suggesting that Andrews knew this 911 call recording would go public? Was she hamming it up for them? I think sometimes our cynicism gets the best of us. Here is a woman whose privacy was violated. You think she might be a little skittish?
  13. She was simply stating WHY she had a fear about the guys in front of her house. To state that, she needed to explain that she was in the news because of a naked video of her on the net that was taken without her permission. Seriously, anyone pointing any kind of finger at Erin Andrews here needs to re-calibrate their moral compass a bit. Call it cynicism, call it what you want, she has done nothing to egg this on. If she wanted to capitalize off it she would have done so in February (or whenever) it first came out. As I said before, she still deserves our benefit of the doubt and has done nothing to indicate otherwise. Edit: I wasn't picking on you there, MJLIverock, by pointing out the word cynicism, but there have been a few people now who have indicated that they kinda think Andrews might be involved or capitalizing on this for her benefit. All I see is a victim so far. If I prove to be wrong, I'll apologize and eat crow.
  14. I can't imagine they will let this topic stay here - probably better for the political forum. BUT, since you asked: It sounds like a situation where things just got out of control way too fast. Should the president have commented on it? No. Do I agree with what he said? Yes. Is the cop a racist? No. It sounds like he's a good guy and let himself get carried away/offended by a guy saying some mean things to him. Did Gates deserve to have any of this happen to him? Absolutely not. The whole situation should have ended the second he produced his I.D. that showed he lived there. Even if he was saying unpleasant things to this officer, the officer should have, at that point, apologized for the misunderstanding and left the premises. This whole thing would have never made the press. Could Gates have handled it better? Probably, but I know I'd have a few choice words too if a cop showed up at my house accusing me of breaking in.
  15. Yeah, I apologize, I went back and read it again and I recognize that he may not have been implying that Andrews was involved. In fact, this theory (that it was someone close to her) may hold some weight as one report I saw tonight suspected it may have been an ESPN employee who did it. So who knows...
  16. I usually just lurk here, but felt the need to log in to say: god I hope not. I think this idea is absurd. Edit: This mentality is a first cousin of the mentality that makes people doubt women when they say they've been raped. Until proven otherwise, I think we owe Erin Andrews the benefit of the doubt on this one.
  17. It's sad watching this because, all politics aside, today's newsmen and women are mere caricatures of what Cronkite was. There are a few out there who I think still "get it": Bob Schieffer, Brian Williams, Tim Russert before he died, Tom Brokaw, etc. But I think you can drill down and see what is largely wrong with America today by the fact that people look to people like Bill O'Reilly, Keith olbermann, Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity for their news. It has become partisan and vitriolic. We need more Walter Cronkites. RIP
  18. It's actually back on. Aaron Sorkin reworking the script. Soderbergh is out.
  19. From Dan Wetzel's column this morning. Unless he shocks the world and loses to Josh Barnett, I think this is what has to happen: Shane Carwin? Cain Velasquez? Mir in a final chapter of a trilogy of fights? No doubt they'll get a chance, and no doubt they stand a chance. The greatest beneficiary of each Lesnar snarl, however, lives in Stary Oskol, Russia, a man named Fedor Emelianenko who is considered the No. 1 heavyweight (if not pound-for-pound fighter) in the world. If anyone has the knockout power to stop the 6-3, 265-pound Lesnar, it's Emelianenko. Fedor doesn't fight in the UFC though. He's with its rival promotion, Affliction. He'll fight Aug. 1 in Anaheim, Calif., in what is the last match of his contract. Affliction is hoping to re-sign him until 2012, but the UFC will come hard after him. More now then ever. And that means money, big money. "Eventually Fedor is going to be here," White said. "I want Fedor. We'll end up getting that deal done and then we'll do Brock vs. Fedor and we'll do a huge fight."
  20. It's almost too much to bear... board rules of propriety, etc... because this one is just lobbed out there. (And, so that I add something, I agree that these guys are a little too over zealous).
  21. There is a lot of Fedor footage on Youtube. It really is impressive to watch, because time and time again you'll think he's in trouble, and he'll find a way to win. He's as cool and calculating of a fighter as I think you'll find in the sport. Not intimidated by any size or specific technique. Goes in and does his thing and gets out... I agree with you on Lesnar, though, if he dominates Mir, he'll be tough to beat for quite some time...
  22. I'm picking Lesnar over Mir. The dude just seems brutal, and like Igor pointed out, he's a much different fighter than the first time they fought. Having said that, I'd love to see Fedor fight any of UFCs top heavyweights right now. I gotta believe that Fedor would just destroy everyone. Unfortunately, I'll be at a wedding Saturday night.
  23. I don't know, really, how anyone can side with one guy over the other. Both of the comments were a: obvious and b: uncalled for. I blame DM less, because he was defending his staff after a star player threw it under the bus. But neither of these guys should be applauded for this. Someone else said it better earlier by saying "no player is above the organization". Everyone should keep it out of the press. While we may not agree with every move DM makes, I don't know how anyone can say that he hasn't had the best interest of the organization in mind 99 percent of the time. And Braun's importance to the team is obvious. Both of these guys should be above this.
