  1. So in reality no pitcher should be allowed to do anything. I guess that is why they seem so lazy and hate to run any time they hit the ball. And they act all winded if they were to move a little faster going from mound to dugout. That's the problem, we want them to come into camp in great shape, but if they do anything athletic in the offseason it's labeled a foolish risk. I'd rather take my chances with a fit, active player than Sidney Ponson.
  2. I have to replay New Vegas. Apparently I made all the wrong decisions and ruined everyones life. Fun game though. At least you got to finish. I was at the final quest and decided to go explore more. My XBox 360 decided to crap the bed and red-ring. It's out of warranty and I'm not buying another one - I just can't bring myself to give more money to Microsoft to replace something that should never need to be replaced.
  3. I completely disagree with motheshipconnection. Overbay doesn't belong in the same sentence as Young. Young might not be a top 1B, but given the alternatives, is certainly a better option than Overbay. Plus I would presume he can still play some at 2B (replacing Weeks) where he'd still be in the upper half offensively. I don't see how the .805 career OPS and 111 OPS+ for Overbay vs .795 OPS and 105 OPS+ for Young could evoke complete disagreement. Overbay's last 3 seasons (OPS+ in parentheses) .777 (108) .838 (119) .762 (107) Young's last 3, while playing in a hitter's park .741 (95) .892 (128) .774 (105) As a 1B and replacement for Prince, which is the context of the comparison, there ain't much difference here.
  4. I can still rattle off sets of 50 push ups, but could maybe reach down and pull out 1 pull up. Even when I boxed and was in fantastic shape, I just couldn't do pull-ups.
  5. I'm about to start "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader", which sounds pretty similar, but I didn't notice it was 800 and some odd pages until I already downloaded it.
  6. I generally get annoyed at book stores here because I know how much it should cost...over there. That's been the big problem. She has found Japanese book stores that ship, but they act like they're selling priceless treasures and not 600 Yen paperbacks. For now, it has just been easiest for her mom to send a couple paperbacks along whenever she ships us something. She's really hoping that the Japanese ebook market will pick up so that she has something akin to the market and prices of Kindle.
  7. What about playing Young at 1B after Fielder leaves? I'm not advocating trading for him, but there could be a spot for him. He'll be 35 the season after Fielder leaves and has 2 career seasons with an OPS of .850 or better (in Texas). At 1B, he's pretty much Lyle Overbay, and I wouldn't pay much more for him.
  8. A bit disconcerting that he claims the team lost money last year and might lose money again this season. Not sure how that will sustainable long term. It won't be if they can't win. If you lose a few million and win games, through, the appreciation of the franchise value, ability to negotiate higher media contracts, and sell tickets/raise prices, it will still be profitable.
  9. If Kotsay hit .315 in a 100 AB's as a pinch hitter it is more useful to know it I think the only real use would be lining up PH numbers vs. regular numbers (while maybe dividing his career into 3 year bins to adjust for age and adjusting for % of AB's against same-handed pitchers, and some other variables) and seeing how similar they are. It's only descriptive, but does allow you to say that in a limited sample, he did not poop the bed when coming off the bench. Conclusions drawn from small samples are not very predictive, however, in that an 0-10 streak can dramatically sway numbers. Also, he has a career BABIP of .362 as a PH,, which is bound to regress toward his overall numbers. because unlike computer models, players are not robots and are affected by things like only pinch hitting or playing 1x a week This is valid, but we don't have enough evidence that he's not going to be a guy who is affected by this and just got lucky in limited AB's thus far. You'd need a pretty large number of AB's to be able to point to a guy and say he's not affected by PH-ing. In 79 PA as PH last year, Craig Counsell was .105OPS better as a sub than as a starter, but over 421 career PA as PH, he's .059OPS worse than his career numbers as a starter.
  10. I don't get the flabbergastedness of many about this Kotsay move. Look, it's a depth thing. If he stinks, he won't be kept around. There may or may not be any "reward" to this, but it's at least pretty much a no-risk thing. There's no reason for anger over the signing, but I think there's plenty for head scratching. I'm all for low-risk/high-reward signings, but Kotsay seems so low-risk/low-reward that I'm not sure why they bothered. They could give an NRI to 42 year-old Keith Osik and it wouldn't be the end of the world, but you'd still wonder what in the world they're thinking and why they didn't instead make the same move for someone who's either a young flame-out someone else wrote off, or talented but coming back from an injury. Those guys sometimes put it back together and contribute, while Kotsay's ceiling at this point would appear to be about .725 OPS, which wouldn't be hard to get from somebody younger with more defensive flexibility.
  11. Melvin should have zero interest. Young is 34, has $48MM and 3 years left, hits well but not great, and is only OK defensively. He'd be a guy you'd consider at 1 yr and $10MM if they took Betancourt back, but that contract is toxic.
  12. I went to a lot of stadiums growing up, but childhood memories being foggy and idealized, I'll rank the ones I've been to in the last 10 years. 1. AT&T Park (Pac Bell when I went). The setting on the ocean is awesome, the 2-3 games we went to were in different sections and the views of the action were all good, the stadium is in a nice location, and the weather is never too hot to stay comfortable. 2. Petco 3. Miller 4. Chase Field 5. Minute Maid 6. Rangers Ballpark (too hot - no roof on that baby was a horrible idea) 7. A couple of spring training and Northwoods League fields I've been to 8. HHH Metrodome
  13. http://www.speedtest.net/result/1126433559.png AT&T isn't good for much in general. At least this is much better than with the Motorola modem they sent me. That thing needed to be turned off then back on every 30 min or so. The "tech guy" who finally called me after I called them 3 times (said they were too busy, had to have someone call me later, I told them when, and they never called) sounded like a 60 year-old used car salesman who knew nothing about computers. Fortunately, the old owners of the house left a pretty new 2Wire modem with integrated wireless router behind in a kitchen cabinet. I hooked that up and drastically increased my speed to the whopping figure you see here.
  14. There was just WAY too much emphasis placed on titles, which is what all stupid analysts do. A hypothetical team that just misses the playoffs 9/10 years and gets eliminated in the LCS once would be way more fun to watch than a perennial turd that has one good season and gets to the same level, or someone that won a WS in the 70's and has been crappy for the last decade+. World series titles won while your parents were in high school do little for your enjoyment as a fan. I don't feel at all enriched by the Bucks' days with Kareem, as I was 9 years from being a zygote when they won the title.
  15. As part of their deal, the A's will not offer Balfour arbitration at the end of his contract - assuring that the next team that signs him won't lose a compensatory draft choice. I actually never knew you were allowed to do this. Why wouldn't every fringe type-A demand this in their contracts?
  16. I dip Copenhagen, but I work in a medical facility, so I can't do it at all at work and don't want to "need" to take breaks because my schedule often doesn't allow it. At work, I use nicotine lozenges, and they work really well. I really never feel the need to dip during the day. The best place to get them is Sam's Club - way cheaper than anywhere else and I get them with pre-tax dollars with my flex account.
  17. Do either of you read Japanese? The wife has been unsuccessful in finding either Japanese ebooks or a good source of Japanese books in America. She has to rely on packing the suitcase when either we go there or her mother comes here.
  18. There's no way this will be civil. Please go to the politics forum to discuss. As a reminder: A) Politics are off-limits here. B) "He started it" is not a valid excuse for breaking site rules yourself.
  19. Most beers consumed without every paying more than $4 for one (not at a game, hotel, restaurant).
  20. Cliff Lee throws out his arm. And the Rangers breathe a sigh of relief before glancing to the left side of the infield and shouting "holy freakin crap! We just gave Adrian Beltre 96 million dollars. Why are we so stupid?".
  21. Yet we cannot find a lender to give us a loan for this home. Thats whats bugging me today. I was in about the about the same boat, but I have student debt and had 10% down. They wouldn't consider my wife's income (or 800 credit score) because her green card wasn't final yet (even though she had a SS#, was here legally, made about as much as I do, and we'd been married 2 weeks when I applied, but green cards take 6-7 months). Long story short, after providing every shred of information to prove that I am a real person, have a real job, have had real jobs for 5 years, AND SETTLED ALL OF THE COLLECTIONS AGAINST MY EX-WIFE which I had co-signed on but were assigned to her by court order when we divorced, we finally got there on the 6th lender, but it fell through 2 days before closing because nobody would give me mortgage insurance (no idea why). So I had to take out a "loan" from my dad which we called a gift to get to 20% down. So then, this loan everyone was too timid to give me, was closed on Oct 22. I just got a letter in the mail today that it has been sold - FOR THE FIFTH TIME! Obviously, nobody was scared of my loan, so I have no idea why it was so hard to get.
  22. Is Kindle the way to go? Can I get better value from a different device? Should I just get her an IPad (I'm assuming IPad's have an e-book reader app - although, I'm hoping to keep it under $200)? I got a Sony Reader Pocket, and the screen looks great PLUS I can download books from virtually any source and import them using Adobe Digital Editions. I don't have experience with Kindle, but don't believe they support epub and other formats. What's most awesome is that the Ft. Worth library has free checkout of ebooks, which I can import to my reader, so I can "go to the library" without leaving my computer, and I don't have to remember to return the books. I just bought the wife an iPad, which she loves, and which can display epub/kindle/basically all formats, plus it's backlit (unlike my reader), but the screen is not glare-free, and it weighs more than the <6oz my reader does, but also has a more "natural" screen size (mine is 5.5").
  23. But am I the only one that remembers that the duo of Capuano and Turnbow cost the Brewers a division title in 2007? Don't forget Vargas' 9.00 August ERA, Bush's 5.60 over Aug and Sept, or any other guy who bombed for part of the season. The better part of that roster could be blamed for the team losing the division that year. They won 83 games - it's not like they were a great team playing in a division with no room for error who lost due to a couple of poor performances costing them the hundredth win.
  24. At best, I see Wolf being worth his salary, so perhaps it would be possible to dump him for salary relief. I just don't see much coming back to the Brewers, even in the best case scenario. I'd assume that to be the case as well. If Rogers steps up big and Narveson is decent, but they need the cash to either extend Greinke, get a legit SS, or sign a replacement 1B, then maybe it makes sense. Otherwise, you're probably just dumping salary at the cost of a potential gaping wound at the end of the rotation.
  25. If someone will give us a good young SS for Axford and Betancourt, maybe you look at is real hard, but I doubt the potential return would really be that good right now. I don't think teams will look at him as anything near a top-flight closer yet due to his short track record, so he may very well have much more value to a contending Brewers team than anyone would give up.
