  1. Definitely call the surgeon's office. If there's an issue where some adaptive equipment would be needed, they could likely order it and have his insurance pay for it.
  2. Agreed that this will do little more than prevent somebody's dad from watching out of market football without paying. Those who are really into file sharing, that guy everyone knew in college who had every album or movie for free the day it came out, won't even notice that this happened. I don't see a realistic way to shut down piracy - you'll likely just catch small-time offenders who aren't smart and experienced enough to get away with it.
  3. Get yourself some Gamakatsu Flounder or Octopus hooks. I've not fished flounder, but have used chunk baits before. You can get Gamakatsu at any fishing store and they're super-sharp, which means the extra 2 bucks nets you more fish.
  4. I can't get behind any trade at this point. We are low on prospects as it is. There are two options for trading that make any sense at all. One is to trade a decent prospect for a decent upgrade. The other is to trade garbage for a lateral move. I'd go with the third: trade a throwaway prospect for a $4MM player who's making $6MM.
  5. I'd assume the union would be perfectly happy with shifting that money from the draft to MLB salary/benefits, as the union represents MLB players.
  6. Was anyone aware of the crap mlb.com just pulled? They changed blackout rules on a whim and decided the game tonight would not be on mlb.tv, despite the Brewers and mlb sites saying it would. I called and talked to a moron who said they're not sure if this is a permanent blackout rules change, or just this once, but there was no reason given. All games tonight, even though they start outside of Fox's exclusive window, are blacked out.
  7. If you care about Mat Gamel ever getting a shot, signing Branyan would be a bad thing. If you care about anything more than Branyan, you require intensive re-education.
  8. It's no dumber than many kids' names I come across in Texas. For girls, you take a random phoneme, add "ley" or "lin/lyn" at the end, and you have a name.
  9. After searching craigslist for similar cars, it seems you'd come out way ahead by fixing and selling it.
  10. I got lucky. Mine broke up and came out on its own (well, through a catheter). The stone coming out didn't hurt at all - the few hours before, however, were torture until they gave me morphine.
  11. I'd be in favor of the ratings system being supplemented with duration of contract in determining compensation. It's messy when a has-been who squeaks into Type A commands the same compensation as a 27-year old superstar, and more than a very good Type B still in his prime who signs a 3-4 year deal. I don't have concrete ideas on this, but if a Type A only gets a 1-year deal, he's not really that valuable, and perhaps should net a sandwhich pick at most. That would also prevent teams from being scared of signing players ranked A, but just not that good. I'm also completely on board with a hard slotting system - if the crappy team doesn't end up with the top player because he wants too much, it cripples the purpose of the draft. I've also banged the drum of pick forfeiture for international signings. Assign a dollar value, and the team loses a pick in a corresponding round for any player signed in that range. Big signings like Dice-K could cost a 1st rounder, the big Latin American contracts would cost a 1st or 2nd, and average Latin American bonuses wouldn't cost anything.
  12. How long you wait to declare yourself a seller when you're losing will depend largely on what is offered. If they're still mediocre in early July, but blown away by an offer for Prince, you become a seller. You always need to weigh the benefit of a trade against keeping him and getting comp picks. If teams offer a pile of spare parts, you keep Prince even if you're a good distance out of the race, because the picks should be at least as valuable.
  13. He's just not really any good anymore. Before, you maybe roll the dice on him not being a disaster because of his bat, but now, you can just go grab a Kotsay.
  14. Agreed on the fake bunt - drives me nuts. There doesn't seem to be any function other than committing ahead that you'll take that pitch, as he's not a big enough bunt threat that pitchers are gonna get all freaked out that he may lay one down. They may actually welcome it.
  15. I find it amusing that you gleaned from this discussion that anyone has said he's "Willy" Mays.
  16. I performed the "5950 surgery" on my last one and it became much more comfortable and didn't look stupid anymore. IMO, it's a really bad design unless you plan on keeping the stickers on the hat and using it to accent your graphic hoodie with a mall kiosk necklace hanging out.
  17. I'm secretly hoping that, in the case we're not making the playoffs anyway, Marcum is simply decent and not awesome to finish the season so Doug can give him a reasonable amount of years and dollars. I'm too risk-averse to be ready to hand out 5-6 years after a 2 year window of health to a guy who'd be 35 or so at the end of the deal. An extension of two or maybe three years at the right price would be awesome. I'd way rather keep the players, but if we lose Prince, Greinke, and Marcum in consecutive seasons, we at least get some pretty big help for the farm system through comp picks.
  18. Agreed on Fielder all the way, like Weeks he's just way too valuable at the plate to make a trade make sense (i.e., the defensive gains won't offset the offensive loss). McGehee I agree on to a lesser extent, as he's cheap and has hit well enough to make him a hard guy to replace without paying a high cost. That leaves us with Betancourt among starters, which already has its own thread. However, I'd love to see them pick up a light-hitting utility IF who plays stellar D, a younger Counsell with a young man's range, in essence.
  19. Don't worry about satellite - just pay $90 for MLB.tv, assuming you have a device that'll stream to your TV. Don't get AT&T for anything - they've been ripping me off on my Internet since I signed up and have sent me multiple collections warnings as a result of their errors. They over-charged me by $120 by not giving me the promo discount, then said they'd credit me the amount, but still send a bill every 10 days or so saying I'm passed due on the original amount and threatening collections. I call, wait for 20 min, talk to someone who pulls up my account and verifies that I do not owe the amount, and says it is taken care of this time and won't happen again. This after they inadvertently canceled my installation so I had to spend 45 minutes on the phone setting it all up again after I moved in, and then they sent me a DOA modem but I couldn't get their tech support people to return my calls. Fortunately, the former owner left his dsl modem in a cupboard. The day I use up the remaining credit I have with them, I'm bolting, and won't even care if I have to go to Comcast to do it. I'm a 9-year T-Mobile customer and will switch to Verizon immediately if the AT&T takeover is finalized. Their website sucks, their customer service is atrocious, and the service is very spotty. History is repeating itself as they march back toward a bloated monopoly that sticks it to consumers.
  20. That just has to be two guys trying to be intentionally-bad as a joke: it's very Lonely Island but not actually funny. No way you look at that when you're done and say "yup, turned out pretty sweet".
  21. But Roco, there's no need for an invisible hand of luck - just for your team to only blow as many plays, make as many base running gaffes, and have relievers give up as many runs as league average. If you suck no more than everyone else, over a large sample the games you lose by sucking should be offset by games when you opponents suck. Now, if you suck in those areas worse than the rest of the league, luck will not bring the balance back to 0.
  22. I'm a pretty lazy mod, so don't take my word as a promise, but moderators will generally notify posters unless the post was simply too ridiculous for us to need to explain why it was deleted. Often, when there's an issue, the mod will confer with other mods to try to decide what we should do about a certain situation. This is why resolutions may sometimes take time, but posters should also rest assured that no single mod (except Brian who reserves the right to shut the whole thing down if you make him mad) rushes to ban or suspend posters.
  23. While I agree that dropping Gallardo for Estrada would be bizarre, the scenario may not be an either/or type of proposition. If they have any inkling that Yo either needs rest or has a mechanical flaw that they don't want him stumbling through big league games to work out, I'd totally be on board with the move. Not because Estrada brings anywhere near the value, but because they need to do whatever is necessary to get Yo back on track, and we have a replacement that isn't a complete train wreck who can limit the bleeding until they get Yo's command issues resolved.
  24. Sensitivity training is a complete joke, and I mean that in empirical and not political terms. The idea that you can overcome a human's entire environmental history with a ten hour touchy-feely drum circle about how we're all equal is just stupid. If a grown man is legitimately bigoted, pointing that out to him has zero probability of making him rethink his position. Short of having them live as minorities in a hostile environment for 5 years, you're merely trying to polish turds.
