  1. This is "Franklin v Kinney" and "should we keep Ginter?" all over again. Hair-splitting is not merited with Betancourt, as it's pretty obvious after 917 games what he is - a crappy fielder with poor plate discipline who occasionally shows good power for his position and has one month of an .800 or better OPS every season (and is .786 in 630 career AB's in August). It seems like the ones who are arguing that he is merely bad are questioning the notion that Melvin could have realistically upgrading the position. On the other hand, the people who think he is terrible think there is no question Melvin could have found an upgrade, as Betancourt set the bar so low. If that is correct, everything else just seems someone irrelevant. This seems to be the gist of it.
  2. You're gonna want to change your avatar pic to a Jonas Brother and your username to "9th GrAdE SK8rBoi".
  3. "Hairston". Everyone practice writing that accurately 50 times before you post references to him. You can keep it straight by remembering that it's made of the words "Hairs" and "ton".
  4. Have you tried gobbing it with vaseline before wrapping? I've never had one that bad, and in such an inconvenient spot, but when I've wrapped bad cuts, I'll use vaseline or A&D ointment before wrapping.
  5. Or to settle the historical feud between their countries. That was my first thought. I've known some nationalistic Koreans who are not very fond of the Japanese (grandparents enslaved under Imperial Japan, the use of "comfort women" etc). Unlike in America, where I married a Japanese woman and it was no issue despite my grandfather having literally exchanged gunshots with Japanese during war, some Asian (e.g., Confucian filial piety) beliefs involve the taint of bad deeds carrying on through multiple generations. This is why the North Korean regime typically imprisoned 3 generations of a family due to one family member's political crimes. That said, it's pretty likely that two millionaires who came to the U.S. to play baseball are going to have no problems with each other in any way.
  6. Thanks Phils for taking the Astros best hitter out of the lineup just as they happen to face our Brewers. Except that they also overpaid to get him and will therefore help make a division foe better in the future. I was hoping they'd keep Pence since we'll still beat up on their crappy team even with him. Since the Astros have money, I don't want them making smart moves, because they could restock and then take the division over in a few years.
  7. Here's all I can come up with: Green was dating Melvin's daughter and cheated on her with Roenicke's son's fiancee. When confronted, he cursed out their wives and made his getaway by stealing Attanasio's car.
  8. Remember when this was the time of year when we'd wonder if we got future big leaguers out of Mike DeJean and Leskanic? Thought we'd maybe be a year of two from reaping the massive benefits of giving roster spots to Enrique Cruz and Matt Ford? Debated whether Kinney or Franklin was more deserving of a rotation spot? Was Ginter going to be an important part of the future? Me too, those years sucked.
  9. Plush - not as talented as the other two, and bound to come back to earth, but he can do something insanely exciting during any AB. Fielder - because he's awesome and hits monster bombs. Braun - because he's awesome and hits monster bombs plus has speed.
  10. Counsil/Council, Sexton, Branyon, Damion Miller.
  11. The D-Backs' announcers are brutal, cliched morons. One of them just said "Betancourt came over from Seattle as a defensive wizard...".
  12. From 2011, including those not currently on the 25-man. 1) Betancourt - there can be no other answer 2) Green 3) Nieves 4) Kotsay 5) Wilson 6) McGehee 7) Loe I don't think my list has been this long since we became de-Seliged.
  13. Roenicke reminds me of a crappy politician. Make decisions based on goofy "I heard once that" types of data rather than the mountains of more meaningful numbers you have access to. Then stick stubbornly by your poor decisions, believing what you want to be true rather than looking at the data which continue to tell you that you're stupid.
  14. No way they can legitimately have anyone else close without that going to grievance. Fangraphs has a good write up on it, this could blow up in the Brewers face and leave them in a bad spot next season. I think the Brewers could get away with this. Just present them a collection of Roenicke's reasoning for other moves, and then give a nonsensical "one of the hitters in each game was 1-1 lifetime against K-Rod" explanation. It would all appear perfectly consistent and in line with other lineup and bullpen moves.
  15. Having been a Brewers fan my whole life, and dealing with stupidity and mismanagement through never-ending losing seasons, I'm very happy for the Pirates. If we can't win it, I'd much rather they do than the Reds or Cards. That said, I don't think they have what it takes: no offensive firepower and too many pitchers who seem due for regression.
  16. How do you figure? Joe basically said what I would have. Counsell plays decent defense at 3 difficult positions and has put up acceptable offensive numbers for a backup infielder. Kotsay, on the other hand, plays mediocre defense at the positions where it's easiest to find guys who hit better than he has. Unless he's a defensive wizard, a backup corner OF with an OPS under .750 is pretty easy to improve upon.
  17. The difference between Counsell and Kotsay is that Counsell had acceptable offensive numbers for his role until 99 ABs of crap this year. Kotsay hasn't justified his roster spot for about 6 years.
  18. Apparently, the trick to getting Kotsay to hit better is to have my wife watch games. Last weekend, I told her that Kotsay and Betancourt are absolute garbage. So now she pays attention and Kotsay has been on a hitting streak. She's convinced that I just have some irrational grudge against the guy. She understands why I said Betancourt sucks, though.
  19. I live 15 min from Arlington, and am currently having a completely miserable day because by A/C went out and they can't get here to fix it until tomorrow. I'd advise making an early season trip there if possible because the heat is complete murder. You're in a confined space with tons of people around you and no air circulation in 105 degree heat. If it's in the summer, wear breathable shorts and a t-shirt, or you'll have an uncomfortable sweaty butt and pits. The stadium is very nice, and has always struck me as being close to Miller Park without a roof, I just never go mid-season.
  20. I'm also a Brandy Old Fashioned drinker. I muddle an orange slice in simple syrup and 4 dashes of bitters, then either just add brandy, or brandy and diet Sprite when I'm trying not to get drunk quickly. My #2 drink recently has been whiskey highballs.
  21. Maybe it has been asked elsewhere, but who else is completely ecstatic in hindsight that Tampa passed over Weeks to take Delmon Young?
  22. Ryan Braun drops to the ground after receiving an errant spit of Redman juice to the face from teammate Tony Plush. Or Having watched Betancourt for too long, Brewers LF Ryan Braun was stunned to find that a shortstop could move 6 feet to make a play.
  23. The theory about RH throwers being successful LH batters is possibly because the dominant and likely strongest arm is in control of the bat being the bottom hand on the bat. In theory it leads to better bat control... As far as I know it's never been proven scientifically, but I still hear it quite frequently, and it is plausible. Seems perfectly plausible - a person with good control over both arms will be able to swing a bat better than someone who only has good control of one arm. I played a lot of basketball as a kid and simply could not, no matter how I tried, develop a non-embarrassing shot with my left arm. I broke my right arm once and couldn't write with my left in a manner that even a 1st grade teacher could decipher. It's no weaker than my right arm, but I have far less control over its movement.
  24. This just had to happen; Nieves flat-out can't hit. The "well, you shouldn't be happy because there are other holes and this isn't a huge upgrade argument" seems as vapid as "that other kid did something naughty first". So what? The team already had a player who's better than a guy who had no business on an MLB roster and they finally corrected it. Should there be no excitement from fans of a team in first place that the front office got rid of a junk player? Should nobody be happy if Betancourt is dumped for an average SS because Gomez and McGehee are still hitting poorly? I've never read claims that this is the ticket to the playoffs, just a no-brainer intraorganizational move.
  25. LaRussa coming out to "argue" three times tonight kind of let me "see the light" about the Cards. Just came here to post the same thing. I felt half-embarrassed just watching the guy. Dude broke out his trot to the ump every time a close call was made, and what does he think is gonna happen? I'm unsure what, after 5,000 games, he thinks he's going to get out of it. What's the probability that the ump says "shoot, sorry, you're right, he was safe"?
