  1. Seriously, they had to give a major league contract for more than league minimum for Manny Parra? Why? LaTroy Hawkins and Matt Capps just signed minor league contracts yesterday. Sure, Hawkins is old and Capps is returning from an injury, but it perplexes me every year which guys are available for minor league deals and which can command a major league deal.
  2. It'd be a coin flip for me on whether I'd prefer Lee or Richie Sexson. I know I'd rather just roll with Gamel and use Green in emergencies than giving more than a minor league deal to a broke-down old guy, though.
  3. LaRussa would only coach for Luxembourg, or a similarly-classy, refined country.
  4. I'm in Ft. Worth and roll with mlb.tv through my PS3. I have solid but not badass internet service (speedtest has me at 12M down/2M up), and the quality is good, but it's rarely real HD quality. Most often, it just looks like a very good SD signal.
  5. I'd agree with them. The intent, as I see it, was to protect the picks of the 10 worst teams so that they can rebuild through free agency with a lesser penalty.
  6. トニープラシュ Sweet, I'll be in Tokyo in June. Can't pass up a chance to see the intersection of Japanese culture and Nyjer Morgan.
  7. I'd be a lot more suspicious if he were heading into year 3 of a 7-year deal. Dude's playing for someone to make a stupid Jayson Werth move on him this winter, no way you get lazy until after that happens.
  8. If you've only interacted with them online, you do NOT have a girlfriend. You have a pen pal of unknown identity. Heck, it might not even be a human. http://drrobertepstein.com/downloads/FROM_RUSSIA_WITH_LOVE-Epstein-Sci_Am_Mind-Oct-Nov2007.pdf
  9. Amazingly the same girl who refuses to sleep is almost completely potty trained at a little less than 2 years old. She hasn't had an accident in 2 weeks. The only remaining hurdle is taking off the diaper for bedtime. Get training pants first. They have a fleece lining and elastic bands around the waist and legs. This serves to minimize the amount of urine seeping out onto the bed (and ruining the bed), but will ensure that the child becomes uncomfortable when they wet themself. The problem with diapers is that they work too well and wick away all moisture, so there's no discomfort to prompt the child to get up when the urge to urinate startles them from their sleep. Start breaking off access to drinks about 2 hours before bed to make sure you get it all dried out before she hits the sack. You want to start with successes so you don't all get frustrated and give up. When this is unsuccessful, I have my patients use devices called NyTone or Wet Stop. They clip onto undies and detect moisture in the pants and sound an alarm. They're often unnecessary, but for really deep sleepers, being startled awake when urination begins should prompt them to stop and complete the urination in the toilet.
  10. Read this book by their 2nd birthday. It's easy toilet/airplane reading, and most people have no idea how to deal with problem behavior (though they think they do). http://www.amazon.com/Parenting-Strong-Willed-Child-Clinically-Six-Year-Olds/dp/0071383018/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1358294347&sr=1-3&keywords=parenting+the+strong+willed+child Fondy, the book that probably has the best empirical support is for treatment of bedtime problems is: http://www.amazon.com/Good-Night-Sweet-Dreams-Love/dp/1889322652/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1358294194&sr=1-1&keywords=pat+friman%2C+go+to Also, because everyone has trouble with toilet training: http://www.amazon.com/Toilet-Training-Less-Than-Day/dp/0671693808/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1358294446&sr=1-1&keywords=toilet+training+in+less+than+a+day
  11. Meanwhile Apple touted the noise canceling microphone on the iPhone5. Its a feature thats been in cell phones for years now, yet I had a guy tell me how great it was to have a noise cancelling microphone on his new iPhone. My favorites were the ones where the iPhone 5 fits in a human hand and that they make earbuds that aren't perfectly round. Off on a tangent, who cares about the earbuds that come with a device? If you cared about sound, you'd already have a pair of Shure, Klipsch or Bose earbuds. I unbox my stuff and toss the earbuds in the trash because they sound like hell.
  12. Going by stats alone can be fairly difficult because of how much variability you can get from one sample to the next. Skinny guys in the pre-steroid era demonstrated big swings in power numbers for one season. Sometimes, guys are just lucky or dealing with chronic injuries that push numbers in one direction of the other. To me, the clearest evidence comes when changes in muscle mass are extremely unlikely from natural causes. To go from fairly thin to huge and ripped long after your natural testosterone levels have peaked is really fishy. I know guys who are that huge and ripped without steroids, but they looked like that in high school because their genes made it possible. Unless there's some crazy epigenetic stuff going on that we don't understand, you don't develop a genetic endowment that makes your veins pop out all over when you're 30. Of course, not all steroid treatments will make you huge, but gigantic gains in muscle just don't happen without "help".
  13. I remember how gung-ho lots of people on this board were about going after him in free agency. That was 2003.
  14. a "pure" Android experience that should hopefully eliminate bloatware Yep, there are only a few uninstallable Google things on mine (e.g., Pinyin IME, because I'm gonna want to type Hanzi some day). I was peeved at Samsung/T-Mobile after rooting my wife's Galaxy and seeing how much crap could be removed and how much smoother it ran.
  15. I just scored a Nexus 7 for Chrimbus. For $199, the thing is awesome. I really like its portability compared to my wife's iPad. It's big enough to work as a tablet, and small enough to be an E-reader and fit in a coat pocket.
  16. Of course, it's the group that cites a dozen metrics to show that Betancourt does not perform well enough to be an MLB starter who are irrational, not the guy who repeatedly trots out sac fly stats and team win totals.
  17. I like it. Should be a decent bullpen arm who can become our #5 starter in case of disaster/the need to shift a young starter to the pen. That's worth $3MM.
  18. Yeah because having an awesome pitching staff would suck Mostly, giving up a top-20 prospect + your #3 and getting a 38 year-old would suck.
  19. While I don't have your internet service and I used a standalone router, I used to have a Linksys n router and was very happy with it. I have AT&T now because it's basically my only option in this neighborhood and they now require you to use their 2wire DSL modem with built-in router.
  20. If he were a free agent, I'd do 5/$75MM for Gallardo. Dude's will hit 27 in a few months and has made at least 30 starts for 4 straight years. I guess, if you have to go 5 years for a pitcher, that's the type you'd do it for. That said, I still don't like more than 3 years for pitchers.
  21. I'm surprised 6year deal at 36mil. This could be an amazing arm for Dodgers at that price for his 26-32years. Though they're paying him $36MM, they also paid his Korean team $25.7MM, so he's really going to cost $61.7MM over 6 years. That's a sizable gamble and would horrify me if the Brewers made that move. Lucky for them, their ownership seems to have bottomless pockets.
  22. His contract has $26MM remaining over 4 years plus 2 option years at $11MM/$11.5MM and a $1.5MM/$1MM buyout. If he were a free agent, would you sign him to this deal? Due to his age, I'd certainly say "yes", but I don't think there's enough surplus value there for them to ask for tons in return.
  23. I really don't follow college football, but watching Bielema's play calling, I was often befuddled. I saw multiple games where his line could impose their will upon the defense and run like crazy, but they'd get cute and go to the air too often and drives would stall out. The TCU game stood out as particularly poorly-managed. When the defense knows you're running and still can't stop you, keep running.
  24. I don't think any executive is putting Gomez in the same class as Bourn/Upton, not even close. Unless I am seriously underestimating how much the consensus opinion of him has changed over the course of last season. Nobody else puts him there, but if history repeats itself, Boras will. All of his players are worth eleventeen bajillion dollars to him until the free agent market dictates that they're worth less.
  25. As a lifelong fan of a team without deep pockets, I'm against having to potentially add another $8MM player. I also just like double switches and seeing all of our players come into games instead of disappearing for weeks.
