  1. I'm of the opinion that you give pretty much anyone who showed big-time talent semi-recently a camp invite, as there's nothing to lose. That said, the chances Sheets has anything left are really small.
  2. If foul language were allowed on this forum, my post would rank in the 5 most-profane.
  3. Don't kid yourself people. I wouldn't expect Rodriguez to fetch a top-10-prospect type. Exactly: you're gonna swap salary dumps at best. Of course, that can still be a great thing if you're moving an overpaid elite reliever and can get an overpaid player at a position of greater impact.
  4. What a difference a year of Yuni makes. To have seen my fist pump when I read of this signing, you'd have thought the Brewers picked up someone good. My "happiness" was simply relief that we didn't either bring back Yuni, or make a stupid commitment to Rollins or Furcal.
  5. Would you buy a $10,000 car you saw a picture of? I would if I thought it was a $15,000 car and I could send a knowledgeable employee to go check it out for me.
  6. Maybe they confused the state Wes' of us with the "Wes' Consin" sportscasters talk about.
  7. I think the 1-game playoff is stupid. After 162 games, to have it decided by a single game (unless you're tied) is just not enough. I'm much more excited by a tight wild card race that goes down to the wire than the race being over far sooner while waiting for a 1-game playoff round.
  8. The difference in housing costs between markets can shave off a big part of savings in income tax, unless a guy just rents a non-luxury apartment, but I sure wouldn't want to live in an apartment for 6 years if I were a millionaire. I pay no state income taxes in Texas, but my property tax bill is huge and we pay 8.25% sales tax. If you're rich, the lack of an income tax makes a bigger difference than for the rest of us, but it's not as big a split as it seems at first glance.
  9. You pretty much need to take the old one out before you'll know. If you have modern wiring and are either installing a fixture that weighs less than the old one, or have a brace in your ceiling to support significant weight, installing new lighting is super easy. If your wiring is old-fashioned or you're trying to install something really big and heavy, the job could be anywhere from mildly challenging to a gigantic pain that you'd rather hire a pro for. ALWAYS SWITCH THE BREAKER OFF OR REMOVE THE FUSE BEFORE YOU WORK ON FIXTURES.
  10. I'll pile on - I hate Twilight. Just a cookie cutter ridiculous high school romance movie, except it's with monsters. Everyone would die for everyone else's love, breathes every breath for them, blah blah blah. Also, I hate how the main girl always bites her freakin lip.
  11. I heard the exact same thing when I first saw that commercial. Reminded me of the South Park episode about Broadway musicals.
  12. Dude's gonna be 35 at the end of the deal, and is a year and a half older than K-Rod who has to be smiling after seeing this deal handed out.
  13. Here are our most recent rentals: X-Men - First Class - I thought this was perhaps the best of the X-Men movies. I'm not a comic guy, but still found the backstory of the split between Professor X and Magneto to be a really interesting story. Unknown - Yeah, it's not a very believable story, but few thrillers are. The wife and I really dig thrillers and conspiracy movies, and both enjoyed this one a lot. Bridesmaids - You've gotta be down with raunchy humor. If you are, it's a pretty enjoyable movie, though it has the boring "plot development" stretches that plague the genre. Hanna - We both thought this was awesome. Who doesn't like a story about a young girl trained in the wilderness to be an assassin? Never Let Me Go - A pretty good story that occasionally got boring. If 1984 and Brave New World type stories (though this goes nowhere near as far) are your thing, you're likely to at least be intrigued by the movie. Blue Valentine - Sucked, big time, and makes me wonder again what critics are thinking. With the divorce rate being what it is, I have no idea who finds this movie unique or interesting. A couple who used to be in love but aren't anymore? May as well have been the story of a kid who goes off to college, gets a 2.8 GPA, switches majors, and ends with him accepting a $35,000 a year job.
  14. In this one instance, if you want to have a check-up done, the Honda dealer would probably be the safe bet. They're likely to know about common design flaws to check for, though in my experience you'll never get a Honda man to admit that their design is less than flawless. In general, I never take my car to a dealership, as their prices are typically insane. You need to find someone who knows something about cars and can recommend an independent mechanic. Better still, everyone should learn to do their own basic repairs. A Haynes manual on your car is a good place to start. On top of that, the wonders of the internets have brought us tons of enthusiast forums that have fantastic summaries of common repairs with pictures and diagrams. I just completed a replacement of my blend doors (they control heat through your vents) that the dealership charges $1,200 for. I did it myself in an evening for $131. That's a significantly higher hourly rate than I get paid at work. Yesterday I flushed my coolant, replaced my lower radiator hose and thermostat, and changed the belt. I did this for $98, which is less than the dealership wants for the coolant flush alone.
  15. There was still a Dippin Dots at the Fort Worth Zoo and my wife and I used to make snide jokes about the future as we walked by. Even though I don't like their product and haven't bought it since the mid-90's, I feel sad that part of our zoo-going tradition will be gone.
  16. Baltimore doesn't make sense for any FA that places any importance on playing for a winner. If you're represented by Boras, it's generally safe to assume that you aren't concerned only with winning. Except maybe in the Charlie Sheen sense. You don't often hear of his guys passing up a few million extra bucks to play for a contender.
  17. This is possibly the result of the biased sample I come across in my line of work, but I'd stay away from Russia. It seems that neglect of infants in orphanages is rampant there, and you end up with developmental delays and severe behavior disorders as a result. Those kids desperately need homes, but can come along with needs that you and your insurance company can't pay for (can't in your case, won't in the insurance company's case).
  18. I know it's easy to talk smack about athletes you hate from behind a keyboard, and most of the time we're just venting. However, I swear that if I were in public and saw Jon Jay chewing on gum, I would punch him in the face. Despite all the nonsense the Cardinals pull, his method of chewing gum was the most annoying thing for me to watch this postseason.
  19. At what temperature does Ruben Quevedo begin sweating? -55F Who finished in 2nd place behind Robin Yount in either year he won the MVP? -1982 Eddie Murray -1989 Ruben Sierra. Who finished in the top-5 in MVP voting more times, Paul Molitor or Cecil Cooper? -Cooper 3 to 2
  20. Here's what I'd like off the top of my head: 1) It may be possible to get a good deal on an aging Carlos Beltran - get him and plunk him down in RF 2) re-sign Hairston - he's the utility guy, starts some 3B and SS, and is there for a Weeks injury 3) Move Hart to 1B 4) Gamel spells Beltran and Hart, fills in when Beltran likely gets hurt 5) Green takes 3B 6) Find an all-glove SS, even if his bat sucks. 7) re-sign Saito 8) Hold your breath and roll the dice on an attempt to get another 2011 Saito-type reliever
  21. Maybe it's Scott Boras throwing a contract wrapped around a baseball to Prince to sign. That'd be the best surprise possible. I also want Steve Bartman there in full Cardinals garb.
  22. There's only one man who can help both our pitching and hitting.
  23. Though only loosely related, this is a good place to mention that NHK Sports did a segment on Beast Mode on Friday. It was pretty unexpected since they don't do a whole lot of MLB coverage outside of the performances of Japanese players. After the videos and interviews, all 3 hosts did Beast Mode toward the camera, which was pretty entertaining. Back on topic, I love the KC fans' nickname of "Plus Hands" for Betancourt.
  24. Mike Cameron: with his jersey untucked and his hat backwards.
