  1. Darvish could be big-time, the question is whether he'd be posted this early, as the Ham Fighters have him for like 7 more years. You'd think they'd milk that cash cow for several years before getting the big payout by posting him.
  2. but the problem with that is that Nathan is signed for a huge amount of money. Looking for a free agent comparison, his contract is very similar to Cordero's ($1MM more total value, and a marginally more expensive option or buyout). You obviously take him over Coco, but how much talent do you need to give up? You have to figure that if Cordero is worth the money on the open market, Nathan is worth the money plus a ton of talent. In the end, it may look more attractive to make a Cordero signing than pick up Nathan (of course, you can't make the signing until after the season).
  3. Doesn't Showalter have a rep for losing the respect of his players (by being a jerk)? Enough with '82, how 'bout we re-live the glory of '87. I nominate Rob Deer.
  4. This has become quite the fad recently. Long term deals for pre-arby players have become the bluetooth headset of baseball management.
  5. It really hurts me to feel bad for a Cubs player, but it happened with Prior. I'm glad he signed elsewhere so I can cheer for the guy to make it back.
  6. Those IGTs can really zoom along, too. It must be hard to stay on top of all those posts in such a short timespan. That combined with what Toby mentioned, account for why it's not going to be 100% consistent. If this were a for-profit website and we all paid dues, Brian could hire professional moderators to sweep through and make sure everything is perfectly consistent and sterilized. I'm cool with the human element, and knowing we're all people with way more important things going on than our hobbies. I think sometimes some of us moderators may let something slide, assuming one of the mods who's more used to dealing with such issues will step in. I think our "more visible" mods do a fantastic job, so I don't really step in with the moderation unless I don't think they've noticed it yet.
  7. Well, I don't think it took all that much in the way of intestinal fortitude to come here. It's a message board for chrissakes. You'd be surprised how much trouble many people have divorcing the internet from day-to-day reality. By that I mean that if a lot of people were ripped on they would either freak out like a firing squad were staring them down, or would come out guns a-blazin' talking trash like an idiot. Always remember, most people on the internet are extremely wealthy, very good looking, a sexual legend, and a master of no fewer than 30 types of hand-to-hand combat. I'd go on, but I need to get back to launching my yacht so it'll be ready for the party Hef and i are throwing this weekend.
  8. Really, you DON'T need a carry-on bag that large. The rollerbags are completely unnecessary - I'm going on a week-long trip and didn't check as much luggage as you brought on the plane. Sure, it'll be nice to have your toaster and hair dryers if we crash in the wilderness, but you can probably do without them while you're on the plane. I'd bet your family didn't bring that much with them when they came to this country on a boat from Europe.
  9. if my history playing baseball video games tells me anything, I'd be even worse at drawing a free pass It's easy to walk when you aren't a good hitter. If you know you only hit meat, you lay off everything questionable. The last year I played I probably lead my team in walks while maybe barely edging out the fat kid in the race for fewest hits. If a dude had nasty stuff I just went up hoping he'd miss 4 times out of 6 pitches.
  10. Best advice is not to go to Midas. Even for my V8, I found a place that'd do the tuneup for $150 - though I said no thanks and did it myself for around $30. After this, I would agree that they give great deals on brakes to get people to come there for all of there repairs and then gouge them pretty good. That's all they do. They'll sell you a "cheap" brake job, but try going in there to have them just change the pads and do nothing else - ain't happening. They're gonna tell you your hub assemblies, rotors, and brake calipers all need to be replaced, and that becomes a $1,500 "$60 brake job". We took my ex's car there one time and they said it needed like $1200 worth of work, and I knew enough about cars to call shenanigans. We took it to another shop and they said "of those repairs, the only one that's maybe, possibly necessary is replacing the rotors, and even that's pretty iffy". We went with their advice and still had no problems when she traded the car in about 2 years later. To top it off, they told us she needed a new hub assembly at about $500 because one wheel was wobbly, which we had never noticed until after we left them and the car shook. The other shop found out that the real problem was that Midas didn't tighten the lug nuts and we were lucky the wheel didn't fall of because of their negligence (and NOT a mechanical defect).
  11. Never watched the show, but I still get the reference.
  12. Isn't anyone else ashamed that we are attempting to give advice based on finance (insurance) rather than patient welfare (doctor)? Yeah, it's pretty insane how brutal it can be to not have insurance. I was offered a consulting job that paid well but didn't include insurance. In the end, that was the deciding factor, as I knew that if I tripped down the stairs I could be bankrupt. It would be horrible to be very responsible financially and then screw it all up because you got sick or hurt.
  13. <----Behavior Analyst (or "behaviorist", or "Skinnerian" or whatever you wanna call it).
  14. The weirdest dream I remember was during the 2002 season when I played for the Brewers for $20 an hour. I woke up and thought "that was actually pretty funny satire", as we sucked so bad, had such crap payroll, and I was fat at the time.
  15. Take Zito off the giants' hands before they realize he has regained his stuff. I'd rather call up Jeff Weaver. Ick, I really just typed that, and actually meant it.
  16. Have Mr. Miyagi do that whole magic rubbing hands thing on Gallardo's knee.
  17. I'd gladly take Vazquez and his contract over Suppan. The deal's actually not that bad, especially if you're confident he won't return to the form of that 3-year slide that started when he went to the Yankees.
  18. To be fair, Nilsson was a pretty decent hitter, especially his .932 OPS in 1996 and .954 in 1999. Had he remained exclusively a catcher, his numbers at the plate look pretty good.
  19. It blew my mind when I stumbled upon it while searching for an image of Dwight Schrute.
  20. when we went to court, he told the court comish that he will not be going after my ex, just me. (Can I sue her for half of the remaining since the landlord or myself never let her off the lease?) I'm pretty sure you can sue her. When I went through a divorce, we almost got sued for a joint loan (I co-signed) that was delinquent. They basically said they'd go after me (because I had a better income), but since our separation agreement stated she was responsible for the loan, I'd then be able to turn around and sue her for what they sued me for. Fortunately, she started making payments and it was all avoided.
  21. The current team has an OPS+ of 93. it was 101 last year, 97 in 2006, 103 in 2005, and 88 in 2004. So the answer would be 2004.
  22. but give Yost the talent that Royster had to work with and he doesn't win much either. Why can't you admit that he simply failed to motivate Glendon Rusch, Quevedo, Jamey Wright, Nelson Figueroa, Jose Cabrera, and Ben Diggins? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. I absolutely loved my trip to San Diego last year. I stayed in Little Italy and had some great chow. Don't pass up an opportunity to go to Petco, it's a great stadium. The train goes down to Tijuana (San Ysidro), which, in the face of everyone who hates it, is one of the coolest places I've ever been. If you can't stand on American soil and look at a big city in another country with crazy colors and a totally different culture and feel utterly overwhelmed, you have no imagination. It's an insane feeling to physically walk the line between two different worlds - to see people caught up in trying to buy a Lexus in one spot and see huge smiles on the faces of poor kids after you walk over a bridge.
  24. So true for the life of me I can't understand why that name is still in use today. The term was used in as derogatory a way as could be imagined. It was primarily used by those who hunted and killed native americans and was done as a way of dehumanizing them in order to clear the conscience of those doing the killing. Historians have actually debunked that origin of the term. Apparently, it simply comes from a tribe that categorized themselves as redskins while the foreigners were whiteskins. link The name is wrong, and people who oppose it keep perpetuating what seems to be an urban legend. Why not just stick to the truth "it offends us", that should be enough. I think the controversy over the "Warriors" name was a little over the top. A "Warrior" could be anything, really Yeah, I don't get why they didn't just keep the name and change the logo to a white guy with a sword and shield. Related to my previous post, do most people know that Vikings did not have horns on their helmets? They misrepresent and mischaracterize us.
  25. Not "should be" or "potentially," but actually a good team right now. In my mind, the short answer is no. Within those parameters, I totally agree with you. Yes, they have the potential to be a good team, but as they stand right now, especially without Yo, several hitters struggling, and Gagne blowing 5 of 14 save opportunities, they aren't performing like a good team. Yes, you do have to offer arby to get picks, but I doubt the Brewers would pass on offering it. Pretty much no way they'd pass unless he blows his elbow out near the end of the year, in which case he takes the one year arby deal to regain his value and be overpaid in '09. If Sheets is at all healthy, he'll reject the arby offer in a nanosecond and take a big multi-year offer elsewhere.
