  1. How is Lopez better than Davis? Because the grass on the other side is always emerald green. His ERA this season was a full run worse than the bad year Davis had. Lopez had some bad luck, but his fip is still 4.99 compared to Davis 4.43. Both are in their final arbitration year, and Lopez has the huge edge in being almost an entire 3 months younger.
  2. the newspaper reports that the Marlins might be willing to trade Josh Johnson, Scott Olsen or Ricky Nolasco." Baldelli is a solid and emerging player. He just turned 25 and posted a .872 OPS this season. However, Josh Johnson won't even be 23 for a couple months and is a starting pitcher who put up a 3.10 ERA this season. Plus, he's an extra two years away from a raise/free agency.
  3. What could we get in return for Brady Clark? The short answer is "nothing but salary relief" - I would be happy if his salary were dumped as long as we are able to obtain another starting CF (or at least a right handed platoon starter) in FA or another trade. However, the longer version of the answer comes when you consider that you also save $3.8M to spend on a free agent, so the trade may essentially be Clark for Dave Roberts (who will cost more and require 2-3 years) and a marginal prospect.
  4. This more than the bag of balls that I thought we would get for Jenks. I would love this move after last year we should be looking for some arms, never know when our "ace" Ben Sheets is going to down again. However, this is an "arm" that would only be here for a year and very likely would be overpaid. You can count on him to eat innings, but I don't know that you could expect him to be much better than a good minor league FA or non-tendered bullpen arm. Jenkins probably has more positive value than Lopez, honestly. Jenkins can be counted on to at least be mediocre and could bounce back to his previous form. Now, if Roberts or another CF is signed and Clark is overpaid and destined to contribute nothing from the bench, this is the kind of player I would trade him for, as both aren't much more than dead weight, but I'd rather have dead weight that at least could fill a need and see playing time.
  5. How come we value stolen bases more for one guy than for another? I've seen Roberts name mentioned and the fact that he's stolen bases at a pretty good clip in the past, and then when Pierre's name is mentioned with stolen bases it's always shot down with "I'd rather have a leadoff hitter who can hit for a little power, as a double is more valuable than a single and a stolen base. A lot of it has to do with the success rate of stolen base attempts. Roberts recently has done that better than Pierre. Also, Pierre has had pretty dismal on-base numbers over the past few years. His career OBP is acceptable, but he hasn't been where he used to be lately. Additionally, Pierre's D is pretty crappy. Finally, and this is the big thing, Pierre is more likely to be pid 50% more than he's objectively worth by a dumb GM impressed by reputation over results while Roberts could potentially be paid a fair amount because many consider him underrated.
  6. He's an innings-eater who has shown the ability to be mediocre (this year and 2003 were pretty brutal, though). If he comes in return for a player of equal negative value - Jenkins or maybe Clark would be acceptable, I'd be OK with it. Nobody worth a darn should be sent over for him, though. Edit: he made $3.75M this year, and though he could take a pay cut in arby, I wouldn't roll the dice and risk giving him $4M, so nevermind. I had erroneously thought he was going into his second arby year rather than third.
  7. His arm in the field is a major drawback, but Carlos Lee's defense was a liability, too. Are power hitters exempt from such scrutiny? Yes and no. Guys who hit a ton are not exempt, in that people will surely point out "he sucks on D". However, there's certainly a balance between hitting and defense, and enough of one can make up for shortcomings at another, to an extent at least. Ozzie Smith would have been an "OK" SS if he only played league average defense. Manny Ramirez, meanwhile, can get by with being a butcher at times in the field because he swings a monster bat.
  8. It'd be the same as say an American guy who went there and came back - he's free to sign with the highest bidder if he so chooses. I believe the posting thing only happens once. I'm talking about the Seibu Lions. I wanted to confirm that their front office has the right to choose which bid they want to accept, and aren't forced to simply choose the highest bid if they feel that team won't sign him and pay the bidding price.
  9. I think the ability to consistently score runs defines whether or not a player is effective at the top of the lineup. Or it defines how good their team was and how many PA they got - as good players on junk teams score fewer runs than they would on top offense. Both players have actually had the benefit of hitting ahead of some pretty good hitters, though Crisp played on some rebuilding teams that only had one good hitter most years (Thome, Bradley, Hafner, Hafner & Peralta) Runs created is a better indicator than runs scored, and Crisp has the edge there over their careers. I don't remember who mentioned this on Brewerfan, but SBs should be considered as extra points to put toward Slug. %. Perhaps SB's above and beyond the percentage where they benefit the team could be put in such a formula. You wouldn't want to give props to a guy who stole 20 in 40 attempts, though, because he hurts his team.
  10. Matsuzaka would become a full-fledged FA next year, though, I believe. With that considered, they can pick which team's bid to accept, correct? That is, if someone offered a few million more, but they thought #2 or 3 was more likely to sign him, they could accept the lower bid to get a better chance at receiving the money. If I were in their shoes and the Yankees were within a few mil of the top bid, I'd take their bid because you are guaranteed they aren't shy of Boras clients and will sign him. Also, this is assuming they know which team makes which bid and can select.
  11. It'd be awesome to have two guys named Coco on one team, I'll tell you that much. After a down year, his value may be low, but his contract is still palatable. How about Gabe Gross and a prospect (Sarfate or someone else for their bullpen perhaps)?
  12. Drew is of the Jenkins mold, but with a bit more talent. Both are fairly inconsistent and injury prone, though Drew is probably even more likely to get hurt. Jenks is a year older. The big difference is that while both broken .900 in OPS three times, Drew broke 1.000 in two of those years, and has been very good in the last three years, where Jenks only has one good season (2005). Jenks has always had the ability to have very good seasons, but Drew has dominant season ability. Add in Drew's better D and that his OPS has a higher percentage of more valuable OBP points, and he's clearly the superior talent.
  13. Doesn't Padilla feel like this year's Matt Clement? Only in terms of how stupid the signing will look. Clement was coming off a 3.68 ERA, 123 ERA+ season while Padilla posted a 4.50 ERA 104 ERA+ mark this year. Clement also hadn't pitched less than 169 IP and appeared to be peaking rather than 3 years past his peak.
  14. That's all Padilla wants? Heck, just non-tender Davis right now and ink Vicente to that deal before other teams wise up to how great he is and pay him way more.
  15. According to 1310 "The Ticket" in Dallas, the Rangers have reportedly confirmed that they have interest in Bonds and have been in contact.
  16. Probably not. He only has one year left before free agency, and would probably cost too much for a one year rental. Giles looked like a guy destined for stardom a few years back, and now just looks like he's destined to be a pretty good player.
  17. Fairly or not, I think Marte was appreciably more valuable last year than Braun is now. Maybe he was overhyped, but he was solidly in the blue chip category.
  18. I'd be really freakin' ticked off that we have to deal with that guy in our divison during the years where we'll have our best shot at contention in a decade and a half. I wouldn't be upset if he goes to the Cubs, because they'll still suck, but going to St. Louis would work us over pretty good.
  19. I heard he is a lock to stay in the Bay area, but does he need to be a DH? How can Frank Thomas and Bonds be both on the A's? I don't think he'd need to be a DH, as he could still likely play a decent first base. At what he'll be paid, though, I wouldn't want to take any unnecessary risks with those glass knees.
  20. Forgive my stupidity, but Perez isn't subject to the rule-V draft is he? Is he considered a free agent signee? How does it work with that? Does he get 4 years now before he is eligible, or is there some provission that allows players like him to sign minor league contracts and not be eligible? It would suck to sign him and then lose him to some other team because he is not on the 40-man. He won't be eligible, as I'm pretty much positive he'll be just like Hernan Irribarren or any other Latin American FA signing who was not drafted (Hernan signed as a free agent fron Venezuela).
  21. I'll probably pass unless he's really cheap ($500K) or reasonable and guaranteed to come to camp healthy (about $1M). Dude had an incredible 2005 at age 32, but has historically been pretty mediocre, which isn't intriguing when you add the injury situation. However, he made quite a few starts just 2 years ago, so he could be a better spot-starter than the awful performances we watched this season.
  22. Gallardo is closer to the majors, and thus must be the safer bet. That's the issue. I think if people had to trade one of them, it'd be Inman simply because the further you are from the bigs, the more obstacles you may stumble over on your way there. Of course, we have guys who dominate AAA and can't make it work in the bigs, so nobody is a sure thing until they've done it at the mlb level. Right now, I think the projections on the two are pretty equal, though the probability of a guy at a more advanced level meeting those projections is much greater. It's widely stated that the biggest adjustment a player has to make is the jump to AA, which Gallardo showed he could handle flawlessly. Inman hasn't had a chance to prove that yet, but let's all hope he progresses as well as Yo did this year and we may have more activity on the minor league forum than the major league forum.
  23. I would be so PO'ed if that deal happened. Yeah, I'd love Wells, but that's too much to pay for one year. If it's true that he's demanding huge money, he won't sign an extension and will be gone after 2007 and we're right back to looking for another hitter. If he had 2 or 3 years left on his deal, I'd be all about giving up some quality players to get him.
  24. I agree with endaround. I'd like to see what Reed can do, but right now the Brewers have several OF just like him- guys who MIGHT be able to do it. It may necessitate packaging Mench with Nix again and seeing what you can get, which won't be a lot. That'd do a lot to clear up the logjam.
  25. The Astros or Rangers. Houston's offense frickin' sucked, and they have a gigantic boatload of payroll coming off the books this winter, allowing them to spend spend spend. Plus, they do not seem averse to signing aging players. Texas is always looking to spend money on offense, and could allow him to DH. With Mench/Lee gone as well as Matthews probably testing free agency, I could see them looking for offense in Bonds.
