  1. Where did you hear Beckham was available? I would love to see Melvin work out a trade for both Floyd and Beckham. That would be fantastic.
  2. Not surprising since a decision seemingly took so long. Now of course the question is, who will be the pitching coach next season?
  3. The Brewers Bar talks about some possibilities here, re: Padres trading for Lawrie. He agrees Latos should be ruled out.
  4. I think FIB is correct in that Rosenthal wasn't stating specifically that the Pads would have any interest in Farris. I think most would agree that you want to see if Weeks will re-sign before dealing Lawrie, though.
  5. Rosenthal mentions the White Sox' Gavin Floyd as a trade possibility in his latest column. That would make sense, I'd think.
  6. I'm inclined to go with RockCo's assessment. The FA pitching market looks really bleak. These "high upside injury guys" just don't work out very much. Webb and Harden certainly sound enticing, but you have to figure there will be a lot of interest and I don't want to see Melvin get into a bidding war for those types. Trade market or bust, IMHO. If some combination of Fielder/Weeks/Lawrie/Gamel/McGehee/prospects can't improve the pitching staff, I'd rather see the team stand pat and punt 2011 then mortgage the future by wasting money on questionable free agents (assuming they require a multi-year deal) or selling the farm for a Zach Greinke type, though.
  7. Ken Rosenthal mentions it in his latest column. Look for the Padres to continue trying to infuse athleticism into their organization — they've also spoken multiple times to the Brewers about Double-A second baseman Brett Lawrie. The Brewers are willing to discuss trading Lawrie for young pitching. Eric Farris, another of their second-base prospects, is batting .379 in the Arizona Fall League and is an outstanding defender with base-stealing ability. Interesting. You would think if the Padres really are interested in Lawrie, they could be a good fit for a trade with the Crew.
  8. Ken Rosenthal pretty much shoots down any talk of Braun being traded in his latest column here.
  9. And I'd hope they don't rip the #23 right off Rickie's jersey immediately. I would guess they would let Rickie keep playing with that number as long as he is a Brewer, even if they did retire Simmons' number in the near future. Or maybe he would just voluntarily switch numbers.
  10. Garvey, Simmons, and Steinbrenner would get my vote. And yes, if Simmons makes the Hall, I think the Brewers should retire his number.
  11. I remember he said that he would still be playing in Japan this coming season.
  12. I think that's what Haudricourt was at least insinuating.
  13. Saw this comment from Tom Haudricourt on the JSOnline blog earlier this afternoon: I highly doubt that Anthony Witrado is telling Peter Gammons that the Brewers are looking to trade Ryan Braun. I don't believe Mr. Gammons needs any help in putting his trade rumors out there, especially if the Red Sox are involved. Doug Melvin told me the other day he has not spoken to Boston GM Theo Epstein this off-season.
  14. Sounds like Kuroda is close to re-signing with the Dodgers. Supposedly it's a 1 year, $12 million deal. I'm shocked it's only one year, but obviously he wants to stay in LA. One more name to scratch off the list, it seems.
  15. He definitely wants to stay at this point, I have to assume. It's more an issue of him fitting in with the team next season. My guess is he'll be re-signed on another one year deal, probably for about the same money he was paid last year. Can't really complain about that.
  16. I think it will be somewhat of a shame if Peterson is gone. I think he did some good things, despite the poor overall pitching results last year. Can't blame him for Suppan starting in the rotation or Hoffman's meltdown at the start of the season, etc. I have to think maybe Roenicke doesn't agree with some of his philosophies or something.
  17. Where is Braun honestly rated as an offensive player across both leagues? Would it be worth trading him for a similar rated pitcher? My opinion is yes. Braun is an elite offensive player. Just going off sheer hits alone, he was 6th overall in all of MLB this year (2nd in the NL behind Carlos Gonzalez), and lead the NL in hits in 2009. That stat alone should give some indication of his value. Good luck seeing Mat Gamel fill those shoes anytime soon.
  18. Yeah, I really don't see any significant evidence to say that Braun sabotaged Macha or something. Maybe there's more to the story that we don't know about, but I think it's kind of pointless to speculate at this point. Another way I look at this: Braun is the one guy (other than Gallardo now) who stepped up to the plate and signed a long term deal. Fielder hasn't and isn't going to. Weeks hasn't (yet). Hart didn't at first, then finally signed a three year deal when it looked like he was going to get traded. Ryan Braun has established himself here in Wisconsin with restaurants and other business ventures. I think it would be a real shame to send out such a high caliber athlete that seems to want to stay here and has placed himself as part of the community. We don't get to see that too often as Brewers fans.
  19. Well, take THAT, Houston! I guess it's good he's coming back, though. I bet the players like him and maybe that was part of the decision.
  20. Well, yes, it's interesting. But realistic? No. I also think some people are really over reaching in thinking that Gamel and Lawrie are just going to waltz in and be in any way comparable to Braun/Fielder (defense aside, which is also far from clear cut). Lawrie is still probably a couple years away, from my understanding. The team has many other assets to trade before worrying about Ryan Braun. Throwing Braun out there right now sounds like a desperation move.
  21. We're never going to sign Crawford or Werth; or at least outbid NYY, LAA, BOS, and whatever other big market teams have interest in those two. Do Twins fans sit around talking about trading Morneau, or Rays fans talk about trading Longoria? This whole idea of dealing Braun just seems really insulting to me, personally.
  22. Nice to see them bouncing back to a 4-5 record after a bad start to the season.
  23. Maybe the person in Milwaukee that Gammons supposedly heard from was Anthony Witrado. I remember last year he was trying to put out the idea that the Brewers might shop Braun as well. Boston gets - Braun, Fielder, Peralta or Rivas. Brewers get - Lester and Buchholtz No offense, but I think this would be a terrible trade for the Brewers. We would be giving up way too much. Granted we'd get a couple very good starting pitchers, but we'd be giving up our two best hitters PLUS a prospect? No thanks.
  24. Royals receive RHP Vin Mazzaro and LHP Justin Marks in exchange. I think this is a good trade for both teams.
  25. "Gamel could stand out in LF as effectively as Braun and probably post stats similar to Braun's 2010. " I really disagree with this. Now I'm going to copy and paste something I just posted over on the JSOnline which sums up my take on that argument (I post as Brauntosaurus over there): Gamel could possibly be worse defensively than Braun (though there's no way to know this without seeing him play LF, which I don't think he ever has). As far as his offense, here's what Braun did in 2010: .304/.365/.501, 25 HR, 103 RBI If Gamel put up those numbers, he would probably be a lock for NL Rookie of the Year (if he's still eligible). Saying he could "very likely" do that is pretty misleading. Ryan Braun is one of the greatest all around offensive players this team has seen, ranking up there with the likes of Robin Yount and Paul Molitor. If he continues his current pace, he's a veritable lock for the Hall of Fame, years from now. You don't trade away that kind of player when he's young and cost controlled. Anyway, this whole thing started with pure speculation from Peter Gammons, who is an unabashed BoSawx homer. It's the usual Boston, "We can trade for every good player and every marquee free agent wants to come here," type attitude that they usually display. I remember how Ben Sheets was always "rumored" to get traded there after his stellar 2004 season. They think Milwaukee is a glorified farm club for them, if you go off some of the trade proposals you see suggested by their fans.
