  1. No, he was looking at the roster as presently constructed, with the assumption Fielder will be traded this winter.
  2. I didn't know where to put this. I'm listening to 1250 WSSP right now, and Gary Ellerson just said the Brewers will win "about 50 games next year." The other hosts told him they play 162, and he stuck to his guns on the prediction.
  3. Roenicke a player favorite in Anaheim. “I’m disappointed he’s leaving,” (Torii) Hunter said. “He’s a very intelligent man. He’s the guy I go to when I’m struggling. “I’m upset, but it’s a great opportunity for him. He’s always wanted to be a manger. Those guys are going to like him.”
  4. Listening to 1250 this afternoon re-confirms that Sparky is a freaking idiot. Basically just whining, "I wanted Bobby Valentine."
  5. McCalvy on Justin James: James was pitching in the Arizona Fall Leagues for the Phoenix Desert Dogs, who happened to square-off on Tuesday against a Surprise Rafters team that includes the Brewers' own slew of prospects. James finished the 2010 season in the Majors with five appearances in relief for the A's but spent most of the year in the Minors, compiling a 1.83 ERA at the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
  6. http://brewersbeat.mlblog..._of_moves_brewers_c.html Brewers... pick up righty relief pitcher Justin James off waivers from the A's, and add catcher Martin Maldonado to the 40 man roster. (replaced original link with permalink --1992)
  7. http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/ Brewers officially decline 2011 options on Trevor Hoffman, Doug Davis, and Gregg Zaun.
  8. Not as bad as Sparky saying that fans would buy tickets if Bobby Valentine was named manager.Yeah. I've never heard of anyone buying a ticket just because of who the team's manager is.
  9. 54 actually, though you were close. Not a spring chicken, but a bit younger than Macha.
  10. Haudricourt with a good summary of Ron Roenicke's credentials from his latest JSOnline blog post: ...Roenicke, 54, also managed for seven seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers' farm system, so he has managed under National League rules. And he also managed under NL rules for San Francisco's Triple-A team in Fresno in 1999. He was named manager of the year in 1997 when San Antonio won the Class AA Texas League title. Roenicke was another manager of the year with Class A San Bernadino in 1995. Roenicke played for six clubs during a 12-year pro career as an outfielder/first baseman. In eight major league seasons, he played for the Dodgers, Mariners, Padres, Giants, Phillies and Reds. He played on San Diego's 1984 NL championship team. Roenicke's brother Gary also played for a lot of teams and currently scouts for the Orioles.
  11. OK, I want to know who's behind this already: http://fireronroenicke.com/
  12. Adam McCalvy with further information: http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/archives/2010/11/roenicke_picked_for_managers_p.html On Tuesday, the Sun-Times surmised that the Brewers may have picked Roenicke because Valentine's price tag was too high. But the team source said financial considerations played "no role whatsoever" in Roenicke getting the job.
  13. It was mentioned on the radio that he was manager of the year in the California League in the mid '90s at one point, so I guess he has a pretty good track record in the minors at least.
  14. Well, this is quite surprising giving all the talk that was centered around Valentine and Cora of late. I have heard good things about Roenicke. Not sure if I'm excited, as I was basically pulling for Valentine. My guess is Valentine simply wanted too much money and the Brewers decided to move on. http://mlb.mlb.com/images/2007/05/26/TGc28Cpc.jpg Edit: Here's his mug so the haters can direct their anger.
  15. Yeah, but how do we possibly compete in the next couple seasons if we don't trade for a Greinke type starter? There aren't any realistic answers in free agency. Hopefully Prince can be flipped for a young high upside starter that's MLB ready, but that isn't necessarily going to be enough to turn us into a contender next year.
  16. No, no real reason for the Brewers to pick up any of those guys at this point. I could see Capuano and possibly Counsell being back next season if they agree to low one year contracts, though.
  17. No, no real reason for the Brewers to pick up any of those guys at this point. I could see Capuano and possibly Counsell being back next season if they agree to low one year contracts, though.
  18. You would think by the time these guys hit the minors, they would have enough basic background in exercise and nutrition to get on the right path themselves.
  19. I was pulling for the Rangers, but can't hold it against the Giants for winning. Would have been nice for the Series to have been a bit more competitive, but whatever. Brian Sabean sure looks a lot better at his job than he did a year ago.
  20. Well, it doesn't really matter either way, does it? I'm sure Bobby Valentine, if he has any interest in coming to Milwaukee whatsoever, is putting on his best face for the Brewers during conversations. Anyway, with the World Series being over, I wonder how long until we hear an official announcement on this.
  21. So you are saying you would pay a manager no more than $1 million per year?I still don't think about $3 million a year is that much. Maybe MLB managers are just underpaid compared to their counterparts in other sports.
  22. You could go to a three game Wild Card series, and have each team play two double headers per season. This would basically eliminate the need to have the playoffs stretch even further into November. Though I suppose if you did expand the first round of the playoffs to best of seven, you would have to. Or just schedule a couple more double headers.
  23. I agree, Patrick. The Brewers have built up some leverage for themselves, in that they have three other well regarded candidates on hand if Valentine isn't serious about working for a reasonable salary
  24. Saw this on ESPN Insider this morning: Bud Selig appears to be laying the groundwork for an expanded postseason.Selig has discussed the idea of a larger playoffs twice during the World Series and his latest comments came before Game 4 on Sunday night. "I like it enough, so we'll seriously consider it," Selig said. "Is eight out of 30 enough? Is that fair? And that's the basic question here, at least for me."Selig appears to be floating the idea to gauge public interested, similar to what he did with the implementation of the wild card in the 1990s.Last week, the players union went public with their feelings toward adding another wild card team in each league.Union head Michael Weiner says not only are his members open to raising he total number of playoff teams to 10 by 2012 but they are also open to extending the division series to seven games. If each league had two wild cards, they could meet in either a one-game or best-of-three playoff to advance to the division series. Some managers are against a one-game playoff. In addition, Selig is worried about the postseason extending toward Thanksgiving.---Personally I like the idea of expanding the playoffs quite a bit. MLB has had a Wild Card "shoot out" three of the past four seasons anyway, so adding an additional Wild Card spot in each league doesn't seem like a huge problem to me. It would also give further incentive to middle and small market teams to remain competitive throughout the season. (fixed links --1992)
  25. Heyman is saying Joey Cora is probably the "backup plan" if a contract can't be worked out with Valentine.
