  1. Well, this is interesting (from McCalvy): Weeks Escobar Fielder Braun McGehee Hart Zaun Stern Narveson
  2. They haven't named anyone yet, but I assume Axford or Villanueva could be options in the interim. Maybe even Todd Coffey. If it gets to the point where it's obvious Hoffman can't be a closer again (if it hasn't reached that point already), then I think they will call up Zach Braddock eventually to take on that role.
  3. No audio, but this blog post from Haudricourt basically summarizes it: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/94478724.html
  4. Well, the offense is producing. It's just that the pitching is so incredibly bad right now (worst in the NL). I don't think it matters who is at the helm. The only point to firing Macha is that it might possibly send a message to the team, and the fact that he probably won't be around next year anyway.
  5. It seems that many on this board greatly over value this team's pitching. Most of us thought it would be impossible for the pitching to be worse than last year and unfortunately, we were wrong. I guess I am guilty of this. I figured this was an 85 win team. Maybe that was a tad optimstic, but I didn't think it was unreasonable. Maybe I had Brewers Blinders on, but I thought Wolf and Davis would be better than they have been so far. Could anyone have reasonably predicted Hoffman and Hawkins both falling off so badly after great performances last year? It's not so much that these guys are all under performing compared to last season, it's that they are so incredibly bad compared to last season. It's like the perfect storm of bad luck and diminishing returns. I don't fully blame Melvin for all these problems, but his flaws as an evaluator of pitching (and the value of these pitchers compared to the salary he has allotted to them) have to definitely be taken into account. It's just sad that we are the fourth best team in all of MLB in runs scored (behind NYY, PHI, and TB). Just seems like such a waste that the pitching can't even be somewhere close to league average.
  6. Well, at the very least they can't lose this coming Monday. As far as the "vote of confidence," I don't know what to say. I'm sure it's the usual baseball speak. Might be the "kiss of death" for Macha, maybe not.
  7. I don't think calling it quits on this season means it will be 3-4 years before the team is competitive again. There are pitchers in the minors who could make an impact next season, if not in 2012. We still have a good core even if we trade Fielder. This franchise has survived after trading guys like Burnitz, Sexson, and Lee in the past. It will survive trading Fielder, which absolutely should happen this season to maximize his value in a trade.
  8. Choice quote from last night: “I’m concerned about the fact that I suck,” said Wolf, who allowed 10 hits, five walks and all six runs before departing with one out in the seventh. “I’m not going to candy coat it. How many (walks) did I have today? Five? That’s horrible. I need to be more aggressive and pitch to contact. Us too, Randy.
  9. I read elsewhere that Macha sounded pretty depressed during the post-game. I didn't bother to watch, but did anyone catch what he said?
  10. My theory is that Braun and Prince really hate Macha and are trying to get him fired as quickly as they can.
  11. From Haudricourt's latest blog entry. I think this offers a glimmer of hope for fans (if any) hoping Hoffman can regain his previous form: All Macha would say is Hoffman is done for now because he's going in the repair shop. Macha said pitching coach Rick Peterson has some new scouting data and info that shows Hoffman is in need of a mechanical adjustment in his delivery. Macha said Hoffman has lost his arm slot and is coming too much over the top, stopping his pitches from moving as he wants and affecting his location. ... Macha, Peterson and Hoffman met for several minutes in Macha's office this afternoon to discuss the situation. Macha said Hoffman expressed regret for the damage he has done to the team by blowing five saves in 10 chances. "He's sorry he's creating a lot of lost sleep for a lot of people," said Macha. "He's a pro's pro. He wants to do what he can to help the team. He wants to get straightened out."
  12. Bumgarner would be nice, but I don't know if they'd be willing to part with him.
  13. It doesn't work because of the reasons endaround outline. However, teams will sometimes give the other team looking to acquire a certain player a "negotiation window" where they can negotiate a contract with a guy before they complete the trade. That's what happened when Johan Santana was dealt to the Mets.
  14. I agree. There was talk the Brewers might not even tender him a contract after this year, and after his good start so far I'd rather deal him and maximize any value we can get. The Brewers may be looking to shed payroll as the season wears on anyway, and it would make sense to explore dealing him. I'd rather deal him while he's hot than wait until he inevitably cools off.
  15. Retirement doesn't sound to be imminent. But when faced head-on with a question like, "Is this the end?" Hoffman's answer is a resounding no. He said Wednesday afternoon that he still wants the ball in the ninth inning. "If it was something other than the fact I was getting my head beat in, I would worry," Hoffman said. "But there isn't a whole lot that has changed. My mechanics are the same. Stuff-wise, it's been a little inconsistent as far as pitches are concerned. But it's not as if I was throwing 90 [mph] last year and I'm throwing 80 this year. I'm a mid-80s guy. The change-up has been mid- to low-70s. Not much is off in those numbers. "I'm worried, don't get me wrong. Or, frustrated, that's the better word. 'Worried' makes it sound like you're just hoping to get people out. No, you have to prepare, and I'm doing that. There's frustration because something is not going right. "Am I tipping my pitches? Has it finally caught up that I'm 42? I don't know. It's something that's out of my control." Edit: Haudricourt just tweeted that Hoffman, Macha, and Peterson all just met to discuss the closer situation, so I imagine we'll hear more later today.
  16. Inglett isn't the worst option, but I still like the idea of McGehee either DHing or moving to 1B, with Counsell playing 3B. Hell, we may want to start trying McGehee at first base anyway, since he might have to start there regularly before the season is over.
  17. I agree with what you're essentially saying. Melvin has been pretty bad at forecasting player performance going forward. And we aren't talking about figuring out which rookies are going to succeed, we're talking about aging veterans or guys who were never really key prospects to begin with (as you mentioned: Hall, Turnbow). Yes, it's very tough, but a small market GM has to be adept at such future planning or he is going to fail in the long run.
  18. I was satisfied with both Parra and Estrada yesterday. Hopefully Parra got a bit of a confidence boost from his first start of the season, and Estrada's stuff looked sharp. If they keep pitching like they did, the Brewers should at least have a decent chance of winning those games going forward.
  19. What we need as manager is someone who is magically able to get the starting pitchers to go longer in games and pitch better. Unfortunately, I don't think Merlin the Wizard is available.
  20. The problem is they don't have any better internal options. Hopefully Gomez will finally get back from the DL sometime this weekend. I don't have a problem with Gerut as a backup, but he shouldn't be an everyday guy at this point. There isn't much in AAA right now that screams call up for an outfielder in the mean time.
