  1. On a similar note, was there ever any followup report on the fan who fell onto the field before the game Sunday?
  2. If the Dodgers were going to trade Loney and a very good pitching prospect for Fielder, I guess I'd be open to the idea. I'm not sure they have any pitching prospects that are really targetable at this point, though. Also, the Dodgers might not even be in contention this year or next with their messed up ownership situation.
  3. Don't tell Tony LaRussa and Chris Carpenter that. Hey, didn't that same franchise have that Bob Gibson guy at one point? Thought I heard about him throwing inside on occasion...
  4. I think John Heyman is the only pundit out there saying it's a good deal so far. That says something, I think. Edit: I'll add to that this is another example of the big market teams screwing things up for the smaller markets. This is an overpay that won't really hurt Philly that much if Howard's level of play goes south. However, this talk that it "raises the bar" for Fielder, Gonzalez, etc. makes it almost impossible that he small market teams can keep those guys.
  5. Wow, that line about Rivas is definitely encouraging. Any chance he's competing for a rotation spot with the Brewers next season?
  6. I'd love to see either a current team (A's?) or an expansion team located in "New Jersey".
  7. Yeah...that's the thing. You can sign a guy like Adam Dunn to play 1B, and even ace type starters can be had for $15 million a year (I think that's what Halladay is getting paid).
  8. Yeah, it was a very good call by that ump that would be blown more often than not.
  9. I agree. He's taking some pretty violent hacks that aren't really close to making contact.
  10. Is Zaun drunk? Now the crowd gives him a big cheer when he finally makes the throw to Gallardo. Chat room is on!
  11. Or if Torres hadn't retired out of the blue after having a pretty nice season.
  12. Go Brewers, let's stop the losing streak and get a win. Just PLEASE don't look past the Pirates. They are going to be out for revenge. Here's some fuel on the fire (from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette): Milwaukee manager and longtime Pittsburgh resident Ken Macha took objection with how Zach Duke plunked the Brewers' Rickie Weeks Wednesday. The 1-2 pitch in question was high and inside, and it immediately followed Jody Gerut's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the sixth inning, and that gave Macha pause."To throw at somebody's face, I don't think that was very good," Macha told MLB.com. "I don't know if he did or not. I can't determine what the intention is. But I kind of took exception to it, and Rickie did, too."They were hitting Prince [Fielder] last year, and now they're hitting Rickie. Those are the wrong guys to be hitting, I'll say that. I would pick somebody else out."Entering play Saturday, Fielder topped the majors (six times hit by pitches) and Weeks was second (five). Duke, when asked about Macha's objections, shrugged and said: "I was just trying to throw inside."The two teams, with ever-growing history between them after a recent 36-1, three-game, record-smashing Brewers sweep, meet again for three more starting Monday in Milwaukee -- where the Pirates have lost 21 in a row.
  13. Personally I'm getting the sense that the Brewers are getting tired of Zaun's deficiencies, and I could see Lucroy being called up as his replacement. Then either Zaun or Kottaras get DFAed.
  14. There's another thread dealing with this in the Off-topic forum, but my understanding it's a Dish Network problem and not an FSN problem. I'm not a Dish subscriber, so others are probably more knowledgeable about this.
  15. I'm not against these steps at all. It's no secret that a guy like Joe Koshansky isn't going to be the successor to Prince. However, once he's healthy, having Mat Gamel start taking reps at 1B could at least send a message to Boras that, "Sorry, we want to keep him, but we're making alternative plans." Hopefully they are already talking to Weeks about a reasonable extension, and I'd love to see them lock up McGehee if he has another great season.
  16. They've kept the terms of the new TV deal pretty secret. I haven't seen anything detailing the actual financial parameters or length of the deal. I do think this deal is bad for the Phillies...it's an extension, it doesn't even start next year. It starts in 2012. Also, there is a sixth year option for $23 million with a whopping $10 million buyout. However, I think the same deal would be fine for Fielder if it started next season, just based on how much younger Fielder is. Edit: I guess the buyout is being included in the $125 million figure, so that's not quite so bad...but Howard is still older and will start declining sooner than later.
  17. I agree. If baseball was truly a "free market" system, the Brewers would be able to re-locate to New York and directly compete with the Yankees and Mets, or at the very least acquire TV rights there to broadcast their games on a local station to reach more fans. Since neither of those possibilities are allowed under MLB guidelines, to pretend this is a free market system is silly. At the very least, I think there are obvious steps MLB could take to make things a little bit more even. Steps like re-aligning the divisions to balance them, fixing the draft system, and perhaps expanding the playoffs would all put small market teams on more of an even footing with the big market clubs. People also ignore that while the NFL has a salary cap, they also don't have guaranteed contracts. If MLB contracts weren't guaranteed, you wouldn't need to worry about a salary cap. Unfortunately, the owners shot themselves in the foot with that one.
  18. Yes, when that player is one of the most talented and popular players of the game. A five year deal at Prince's age is not that risky, especially given that I assume the team could get insurance on it. The downside of this deal, like some mentioned, is that it makes it more likely that Boras will be determined to have Fielder test free agency. I assume Pujols will re-sign with the Cardinals, so Prince's only real competition on the FA market after 2011 will be Gonzalez (assuming he does not re-sign as well), and lesser guys like Lance Berkman. I think in about another month we'll have a pretty good idea if the Brewers have any shot at retaining Prince beyond 2011 or not.
  19. If this is true, it's great news for the Brewers. I'd do that deal with Prince every time.
  20. The point is that you can throw Suppan in there during a blowout, and not waste better pitchers like Vargas/Parra/Villanueva, etc. And how can you say Suppan has negative value as a reliever when he has never really been a reliever his entire career?
  21. I agree that a lot of the bean balls are a result of Prince and Rickie crowding the plate. It's bound to happen. However, there have also been instances where the beaning was obviously intentional, and Macha didn't do anything to "protect" his guys.
  22. I think Macha does not go in for the whole "retaliation" thing. I also think Prince and/or Weeks are going to get frustrated about this situation eventually.
  23. I guess I don't get what correlation this team has to the 1982 team. I agree with the sentiment that I don't see much point in firing him before the end of the year. I'd rather not see Randolph or Sveum just handed the job. If they're going to look for a new manager, I'd rather them consider all possible candidates after the season. The only way I can see Macha getting fired mid-season is if he has obviously lost the respect of the players and they aren't listening to him anymore. I won't be that excited to see Randolph or Sveum as the interim manager, though.
  24. It was pretty bad, but other than yesterday, Bush has been our best starter so far this season.
