  1. Well, he certainly looked pretty solid last night. Do people think he's turned a corner now? Maybe he just needed the first month of the season to figure things out? It's probably going to take a couple more starts to make sure we have the "old" Hoffman back, but at least it's a step in the right direction.
  2. I think my biggest problem with Melvin is how indecisive he was on where the team was heading mid-season in '09. Yeah, we were still kind of competitive in June and July. He traded for Lopez, which I do think was a nice move. However, he did nothing to help the starting pitching at all. It was obvious that some key aces were available, but he let them go to other teams. Supposedly he was involved in negotiations, but he wasn't over aggressive. By the trading deadline it was obvious the team desperately needed SP help if we were going to make a legitimate push for the playoffs. Instead he essentially stood pat. Then in August when we could have dealt some veterans for perhaps at least some mid-level prospects or cheaper young guys, he didn't even bother to make a move then. I know hindsight is 20/20, but if he had dealt a few pieces like Hoffman, Counsell, Cameron, Kendall, maybe even Gamel and/or Salome, the team would probably be in much better shape today. Either your team is in it or isn't in it. You can't just make a couple middling moves and pretend you're trying to still compete.
  3. Two shut out games in a row make it tough to be optimistic. We're in fifth place, just one game above the lowly Astros. It's hard to see this game stringing together enough wins to catch up to the Cards or even the Reds at this point. You have to wonder if Macha is on the "hot seat" if this road trip goes as badly as the previous home stand. My big fear is that an early sell off may be warranted if the poor play continues, but Melvin won't have the guts to pull the trigger on anything, due to the team's over reliance on ticket sales to generate revenue. This could be a really disastrous season if things don't turn around soon and potential moves aren't done.
  4. Seems eerily reminiscent of that movie "Sugar", which Angel had a cameo in.
  5. Too funny. Sloppy reporting at its finest.
  6. I kind of doubt Lucroy's promotion had much to do with this. Almost sounds like this may have been building for a while, though it's of course impossible to know for sure. Disappointing to hear about, but like the article said, at least the presence of Lucroy makes this hurt less for the Brewers organization.

  8. I think you're under selling how intelligent the average baseball fan these days is. Actually, my mom, who does not know all that much about professional baseball was asking me about Prince the other day. Her comment was, "They're really going to pay a first baseman $20 million a year?" I think the average fan knows it would be irresponsible to spend that much on a single position player. This isn't like the days when we traded Sexson when he was our only really good player on the team. We will still have Braun, Gallardo, etc. I think Braun is more popular with most fans these days anyway, since he was actually willing to stick his money where his mouth is and sign a long term deal. People appreciate that, and know Prince probably isn't going to do the same thing.
  9. Yeah, given the Red Sox recent history of non-trade activity when things have seemed to match up well, I can't see Melvin getting enough out of Epstein to make a trade with the BoSox worthwhile.
  10. Tweet from Tyler Barnes says: "Uecker's surgery went well. More to come." So that is a good sign, it seems.
  11. You're really nit picking my statement and trying to create an argument where none exists.
  12. Not sure, but I bet you hate that one Boston song, huh?
  13. I doubt the NBA is really invested in seeing the Hawks move on at this point.
  14. He's still pretty young. I wouldn't be panicking about him quite yet.
  15. He did basically oversee two meltdowns of the Mets. I have heard from some Mets fans I've spoken with personally, that felt he was basically sabotaged and run out on a rail before he got fired, though.
  16. As amusing as the premise of this story is, this kid needs a pretty severe punishment. The boy he sliced with the machete needed 20 stiches. Not cool.
  17. I don't think you can really do The Office without Steve Carrell. The whole show is based on the premise of the awkward boss. Having someone else take over just wouldn't really do the show justice at this point. As much as I love the series, one more season is probably enough, as seven seasons is a pretty good run for any television show. Last night's episode was pretty good for me. Some of the ancillary characters like Oscar and Kevin got to have their moments again. I liked the argument about the M&M jar in particular. I did think the ending was kind of predictable, though having no one believe Michael afterwards was kind of amusing.
  18. Not to rip on you, but those examples seem pretty over the top. I can't imagine any team in the US naming themselves after something associated with slavery or the Holocaust. I wonder sometimes if the complaints are actually generated by the people supposedly affected. Look at here in Wisconsin, the state passed a law that allows people to complain about school mascots, possibly causing the schools in question to be fined. I live in a town where the local high school is nicknamed "the Blackhawks", after Chief Blackhawk of the Sauk tribe (IIRC). It was done as a tribute to someone integral to the history of the area, and the logo is pretty diginified looking (not a caricature). I'm sure someday, some person trying to "defend the dignity of Native Americans from something offensive" will complain about it, and the school will be forced to change its name to something generic like the Lasers or Blackbirds (or is even that offensive?) or something.
  19. I don't think Macha is necessarily "bad", but I do question more and more if he is a good fit for the team he's been given. I think he'd probably be a better fit for a team stacked with veterans, than a team with guys who are still relatively young like the Brewers. It just doesn't seem like he knows how to get the most out of the guys he has under him right now.
  20. This I definitely agree with. After how badly this team got burned on draft picks when Sheets and Sabathia departed, I never want to hear about draft pick compensation again.
  21. I like the HFA aspect of the World Series now. It's better than the old system where they just had it alternate every year.
  22. I got some word that we'll probably hear something about this situation very soon, possibly today.
  23. A recent report out of Major League Baseball indicates that the sport's All-Star Game will undergo minor changes beginning in 2010. These changes include: Employing the DH rule in every baseball stadium, including National League parks.Expanding each roster to 34 players, to include one more position player for each team.Prohibiting any starting pitcher to play in the game who had pitched for their team the previous Sunday.Allowing for position a player to re-enter the game to replace an injured player (previously, this rule only applied for an injured catcher).I don't mind the DH rule change, as I basically hate watching pitchers try to hit anyway, but I'm not sure if the further roster expansion should really be necessary at this point.
  24. Interesting analysis from a site I hadn't seen before: At age 30, Howard is likely already past his peak. His top three similar batters through age 29 are Richie Sexson, Cecil Fielder, and Mo Vaughn. All were ineffective by age 33 and out of baseball by age 35. Fielder will turn 26 this season – his top similar batters through age 25 are Juan Gonzalez, Eddie Murray, and Jim Rice. All were excellent hitters through at least age 32. So yeah, based on comparable players, I think it's safe to say Fielder will be much better than Howard for the next 6-7 years. Though as the article argues, even Prince isn't worth a deal like Howard's, or especially one that will probably eclipse his.
  25. It should be clear after last night's game that the team is fairly shorthanded right now (I guess McGehee is back today, though). Melvin needs to make some kind of move if Edmonds is going to be unavailable for an extended period.
