  1. I think historically the teams win about 55% of the time.
  2. I think Briggs hits the nail on the head. Money for rather marginal position players isn't being thrown around like it used to. That's just what makes this arbitration ruling more frustrating and confusing. The system is clearly broken and should be reevaluated. For the record, I am not angry at Hart about this. I was disappointed in his performance this past season, but I want him to play well this season because it will help the team. It's just with a small market team like Milwaukee, every dollar counts. While a $1.5 million pay increase might not be a huge deal in terms of sports salaries, it could possibly hurt the Brewers' ability to add further payroll during the season. That would be a very bad consequence.
  3. Is there any possibility of adding Notre Dame at all? I've heard they don't want to give up their independent status, but some say there could be some big benefits if they join the Big Ten. Seems like that would be the dream scenario, though.
  4. Yeah. I also liked how Dwight and Ryan plotting against Jim played out. Ryan wanting to go all Saw on Jim was both creepy and funny at the same time.
  5. Right. The only scenario I could see is if Melvin and the Brewers decide to bit the bullet and sign someone like Johnny Damon or another player they feel could be a decent improvement over Hart for not much more money (and a guy like Damon wants a two year contract, so it may not be worth it).
  6. Arbitration money is not guaranteed, could he could be cut like myself and others were possibly suggesting. At least that is my understanding.
  7. Maybe they should just release him and sign Damon or someone instead at this point out of spite.
  8. Well, Corey better come into the season raking and playing solid defense, or the boo birds are going to be raining down, that's for sure.
  9. Ugh. You have to be kidding me, right? Nope, you weren't. Here's what Haudricourt says: I just received a text message from Brewers negotiator Teddy Werner, who said he was informed by management's Labor Relations Dept. that rightfielder Corey Hart won his arbitration hearing, conducted Thursday in St. Petersburg, Fla. Hart will receive the $4.8 million salary he requested. The Brewers had offered $4.15 million. So, the gamble Hart and his agent, Jeff Berry, took paid off handsomely. Even had Hart lost, he would have received a $900,000 raise from his $3.25 million salary of last year. Instead, he gets a $1.55 million raise.
  10. Great episode last night. Maybe the best of this season, in my opinion.
  11. Yes, but unfortunately the average fan just doesn't tend to think that way. They see our "best" player leaving and are going to think "Same old Brewers." It will be the franchise's job to quickly change that perception by getting some great talent for him in trade, or quickly replacing him if he leaves in FA with someone who is at least above average offensively.
  12. Well, he is basically the face of the team at this point (along with Braun), and probably the most popular player on the Brewers right now. It will be hard to see him go eventually. Tom Haudricourt was talking about that a while back on 540 ESPN. He basically said it seems like people aren't even enjoying Prince as a player, because they are freaking out about him leaving. That is probably somewhat true, and kind of a shame.
  13. re: thebruce44. Yeah, I saw that article this morning as well. It's stuff like that which is going to cause some fans to scream about how the Brewers "were just too cheap to pay him", on the day that Prince is either traded or leaves in free agency.
  14. Right. It seems like closers tend to be good for a couple years, but then can easily become headcases or break down. Guys like Hoffman and Rivera who can be dominant closers for years and years are quite rare.
  15. Yeah, I get the feeling if the Brewers tank early in the season, the smart move will be to trade him (assuming he doesn't sign a surprise extension between then and now). Otherwise ride him out this season, and then trade him next winter if it's clear he's going to leave in FA.
  16. It seems virtually certain that Minaya will get fired before the All-Star break at this point. Maybe then whoever the interim GM is will be instructed to start trading guys off an shedding payroll. Probably build around Wright and Bay, and I assume keep Santana. Everyone else should be pretty expendable.
  17. Didn't the Wilpons get hit hard by the whole Madoff thing? I'm pretty sure I remember reading something about that a while ago. That could be a factor.
  18. I agree with you on Gamel, Scooter. I got the sense he just needs more playing time at 3B. I think he could stick there, but it ultimately wouldn't surprise me if he gets moved to 1B or RF...but it's going to be due to a vacancy, and not due to his defensive deficiencies. I haven't read enough on Lawrie to know much about his defense yet.
  19. Just heard that FOX supposedly is approaching Conan, possibly with the idea of him being on American Idol next season (after Simon leaves). I can't say I'd be terribly interested in seeing that, and not sure if Conan would be interested in it, either. I'd hope he can do better, if this rumor is even true to begin with.
  20. I get those who say having defined roles in the bullpen seems silly, but it seems like it's proven time and again that pitchers need to have some sense of placement, like you pointed out. Just looking at the Brewers' own recent history goes along with that.
  21. Pretty sure you can get those at Miller Park.
  22. I think this is a valid point. He gave the team over to Wendy in 1998, and by that point Miller Park was already secured, if I'm not mistaken. He could have sold the team to an outside investor at that point, and his legacy would probably look much better. Only a few bad years in the '90s after relative success in the late '80s/early '90s, versus a decade plus of futility. I'm guessing there was a huge financial impetus for him to keep the team in the family for a few more years, and I don't blame him for that at all.
  23. If people don't want a statue, maybe they could just rename it "Selig Park" instead. After all, other cities have stadiums named after former owners. Seriously though, that Caple article was ridiculous. Also, it sucked. There's a "Beavis and Butthead" reference in the first paragraph. I minored in English writing in college and I think I could compose something more compelling than this schlock. Also, judging by some of those comments, I think most fans are happy just being generally ignorant and overly negative about everything. I suppose it's easier to go through life that way.
  24. Has there been any more talk about this lately? I haven't seen much reported on Mauer's situation in the past few days.
  25. If it's still open (I don't get up to the Twin Cities very regularly), there's a bar called the Triple Rock Social Club that serves a killer "hangover breakfast".
