  1. I remember a few years back when we were still living in Whitewater, there was a fairly sizable quake that knocked a couple pictures off the walls of our apartment. I did not notice or feel anything last night, though.
  2. Yes, but would these new fees just pay for the Cubs' new stadium, or new stadiums for all the teams (or improvements to existing ones)? If it's not the latter, how can it be considered revenue sharing in any way, shape, or form?
  3. Let me guess, the hosts basically boiled their argument down to: "Bud is an evil commissioner who allowed steroids to run rampant", right?
  4. You should post exactly this in that other forum. I bet that would get them going.
  5. They said that he and Peterson have a relationship. I wouldn't be surprise if the new pitching coach is just doing this as a favor to Schoeneweis after his tragedy last season.
  6. Haudricourt also notes the Brewers are going to schedule a bunch of "B games" during ST to make sure everyone has a chance. He also insinuates Macha wanted to have another situation lefty "just in case."
  7. The discussion about this topic on WSSP this afternoon just about made my brain explode. I guess that's what I get for turning on that station though.
  8. I'm not sure if they're currently on hiatus or not, but would the White Stripes be a realistic possibility? Fairly hip and modern, but not overly heavy, and enough "safe" songs in their repetoire.
  9. For those whining about the tax payers, I do believe credit is given to the five counties on that plaque facing the home plate entrance. And yeah, excuse me if I find the prospect of Milwaukee being a AAA town quite a bit less exciting. If I want to see minor league ball I'll drive to down Beloit or up to the Fox Valley.
  10. There's that cliche New York fan sense of entitlement for you.
  11. Surprise signing. Brewers are really loading up on the pitchers, that's for sure.
  12. And I guess I would say that he deserves more than that. The statue, with relation to his accomplishments regarding the Brewers, is quite fitting in my mind.
  13. I really don't think Suppan is guaranteed a spot at this point. Melvin knows his job may be on the line this season, as is probably Macha's. They aren't going to risk bringing him back if he looks quite bad in spring training, and if other guys show themselves to obviously be better options.
  14. Well, there you go.
  15. Hart's hearing isn't until this Thursday, according to the JSOnline Brewers blog.
  16. Any study like that is going to be somewhat flawed. How many cities in America the size of Milwaukee have no major sports teams? A small handful, perhaps? And then there are so many other factors aside from having a sports team that contribute to a particular city's economy, that I would be very hesistant to trust such an analysis. But yes, the prestige and pride that a sports team bring to a community is often way overlooked. I know it's sort of apples and oranges, but what would Green Bay really be without the Packers? By all accounts, the years without baseball in Milwaukee were pretty dreary. Must have been some pretty boring summer months for sports fans, I'd wager.
  17. I believe I read on this forum that the teams in the top 10 of payroll have a roughly 75% chance of making the playoffs, where the other 20 only have about a 25% chance of making the playoffs. You are probably basically right that a third of league maybe only has a 5% chance. That's the big difference in the NFL. At the beginning of any season, I'd say you have only a very small handful of teams with virtually no shot at making the playoffs, and mainly these are due to mismanagement (Raiders, Redskins), or being in obvious rebuild mode (Lions, Bucaneers). Of course, the difference is they have more playoff spots in the NFL, too.
  18. That's a shame to hear. I had an XM subscription up until a couple years ago (the power plug in my car went out, so I couldn't listen while commuting anymore, and it wasn't worth fixing at that point, plus I hated the music selection and sound quality once they merged with Sirius), and it seemed like they were more balanced back then. I used to love Dibble and Kennedy on "The Show" in the afternoons, but then they stupidly broke them up (probably due to budget cuts, I think). They also got rid of Charlie Steiner, who seemed to talk about the different teams quite often.
  19. You are right to an extent, and you aren't saying anything that hasn't been said again and again on here. Really, they are trying though, I think. If you watch MLB Network, they do a pretty good job of covering all 30 teams. You see games from all the different divisions during the season. If you're just watching ESPN, you're going to get a pretty heavy East Coast bias, which is just the reality. Ultimately there has to be more parity between the big market and small market clubs, otherwise the Yankees and Red Sox of the world will keep making the World Series regardless, and hence continue getting the brunt of the media coverage.
  20. Great read. I was somewhat surprised he was so candid regarding the Ryan Braun situation last year, but it sounds like they settled everything and moved on. It was interesting to read about.
  21. Most of the criticism seems to be based around a relatively myopic view that "Selig held the tax payers hostage in order to get Miller Park built." Of course, most of these people don't mind actually going to Miller Park and being guaranteed to see an MLB game, or watching the games on TV (or listening to Uecker on the radio). They also ignore the number of people employed at Miller Park, the economic benefits of having an MLB team, the entertainment value, etc. It's just a bit disingenuous to try and break the criticism down to a very minimal tax increase, one that only happened after numerous other alternative avenues had been explored. I heard a certain local talk radio host using this same tired argument today to take a jab at Bud Selig, and I just had to shake my head in disgust.
  22. Hehe. Maybe Mark Attanasio is thinking, "I can give him a statue, and then really push for a salary cap and additional revenue sharing!"
  23. Nah, it was a guy.
  24. Well, you are right that selling in the late '80s may have been a stretch, but by '91 or '92 it was probably becoming clear that the Brewers weren't going to be able to compete as well, at least with Selig's budget. When it was clear he was going to become commissioner, it would have probably been more financially prudent to sell to the team, rather than essentially gift it to Wendy and Laurel. But you are right that an outside buyer probably would have moved the team (as I noted in my original post).
  25. I found MLB 09: The Show to be a bit too difficult last year. I know it takes practice and a lot of tweaking, but I found myself getting frustrated a lot if I played on anything higher than the easiest setting. I should probably pick it up again, as I sort of gave up on it a couple months after buying it. It's a great game, I just didn't have the patience for it. And yes, the commentary was extremely repetitious, especially since it seems like they just re-used the snippets from earlier editions without adding much new commentary.
