  1. Yes, that's how the administration and Congress sold it, but if you look at where the money is going, by and large it was spent on infrastructure (ie. "pork projects"). Building and fixing infrastructure isn't necessarily a bad thing, though.
  2. I don't think the time zone thing is such a huge issue with modern air travel. Houston would just fit in much better with the AL West teams in terms of geography and "culture". They are basically right down the road from the Rangers (relatively speaking) and the D-Backs play almost as close to them as the Cardinals do. They just don't "fit" in the Central Division.
  3. The problem with that argument is that, when is the government (state or federal) ever "swimming in money?" Debt can be managed...that can't be used as an excuse to not build infrastructure.
  4. No, your comment about how "I doubt anyone here can say that", in regards to making Hart's salary, as if that is really relevant to the conversation. The attitude you've been showing in this whole thread isn't really too surprising given your previous posting history, though.
  5. This is good. I kind of like Smith. Incidentally, my dad (who was an amateur baseball player) always raves about what Smith showed this past year, for some odd reason. I have a feeling he'll be back up with the Brewers this season at some point.
  6. Seems like an interesting pickup. Melvin and Co. have had a knack of finding those "diamonds in the rough." Maybe this could be another one like that.
  7. I think I like this idea best. It balances things out without going for a total overhaul. Plus Houston could have a nice rivalry with the Rangers that could bring a lot of money to both teams eventually. It doesn't seem like the Astros have any real rivalry right now with any of the NL Central teams. They're just sort of "there," and don't have a real geographical connection to the other teams. As far as the DH, I heard Drew Olson offer an interesting idea today. Have the DH in both leagues, but make it a rule where the DH could only bat a maximum number of times per game, and could be taken out and inserted back in. Say for example, he can bat a maximum of three times per game. Managers would have to decide whether to start the game with him in the lineup, or save him for later. You could have the strategy aspect, without having to always see lousy pitchers trying to hit. I think it would strike a good balance. Perhaps MLB could expand the rosters to 26 players to allow this to happen.
  8. I like that idea, but it's probably too radical for MLB to ever accomplish. I think the worry would be that the MLB "A League" team attendance figures would plummet. There would be a stigma attached to those teams that most North American baseball fans probably could not get used to.
  9. Yeah, I remember someone on this board outlining a plan like that a while back. You'd probably have to expand the total of real "majors" teams to about 40 to make it work. I don't think you could use existing AAA teams realistically.
  10. I do agree with the premise that adding another lane to an interstate is not a good long term solution. I mean, I always see that the eastbound lane of I-94 gets littered with pot holes after a bad snow storm. I believe I've read the average roadway needs to get replaced every 7 years. I would guess the maintenance on railway tracks is not comparable.
  11. Ouch. Yeah, that made my brain hurt. A "lottery draft" to determine which teams end up where each season, while leaving certain teams in certain divisions? That's insane. I guess he gets points for being creative, but the overall idea is just stupid. All of this is moot anyway until MLB expands to 32 teams or decides that interleague play all season won't upset the ghosts of baseball past. Having one four team division and one six team division is asinine no matter how you slice it.
  12. Wow, pretty cool. If I could justify it right now, I'd probably buy it.
  13. Yeah, that's my whole beef with it. I don't have any qualms about mass transit. But if they're going to do it, they should do it right. Don't just give us some half-you-know-what thing and pretend it's "high speed rail" when it really isn't, and doesn't seem to offer any substantially greater benefits than what we have currently.
  14. Wasn't it after the '07 season that the Brewers offered Hart a contract in the neighborhood of $40 million that he turned down?
  15. "Let's take what works and wreck it!"
  16. This really isn't a done deal yet, apparently. Buster Olney has a contradictory report out. It sounds like they are working on something, though.
  17. One problem is that Lowell may not pass a physical right now.
  18. The difference between McGehee and Hart is that McGehee seems to have a better swing, and also plate discipline.
  19. Wow, that's awesome. Looks like it could be a three-peat of 3 million-plus fans at Miller Park.
  20. MLB Trade Rumors has a link to Buster Olney saying those preliminary reports "are not accurate". Sounds like something is going on, though.
  21. Thanks for the picture, ekutchery. And yeah, that is definitely an unimpressive trophy...looks like an oversized communion cup.
  22. I'm sure I read somewhere a while ago that they intend to keep the Big 10 name no matter what.
  23. I'm not sure if the Yankees are a fit at all, what with Texeira locked up long term. I suppose they could use him as a DH, but I'm not sure Fielder is ready to accept that role at this point in his career. They also have Jeter, Rodriguez, Swisher, etc. on hand as possible future DHs.
  24. Yeah, I think a lot of the comments he made are the typical, "Yes, I love it here, BUT..." type statements basically all impending baseball free agents make. I don't think it's even a matter if the Brewers can pay him, because realistically, they could come up with the money. It just probably doesn't make long term financial sense for the club, and that is what stinks about baseball currently. We're going to miss him a lot when he's gone.
  25. Griffey was also injured quite frequently, almost to a comical extent. Assuming the same could happen with Prince seems like a reach. Fun fact: Prince is the current "iron man" of baseball, having played the most consecutive games.
