  1. Just got a tweet from Adam McCalvy with a quote from Mulder's agent saying reports his client has retired, "Are not accurate." What a weird situation.
  2. rluz, people thought it was hypocritical of Prince to whine about getting paid $670,000 when he (and/or Scott Boras) reportedly turned down a $60 million contract offer. I don't blame some fans for criticizing him in that instance. TLB, I remember Haudricourt talking about it in the past. I'm sorry I don't have a specific article or link off hand.
  3. Whoops. My bad. I missed the "at" in the second part of your statement. As far as Lopez, I hope he comes on with someone, somewhere. I enjoyed watching him play during his time here, and didn't see evidence of him being a "punk" or "dogging it" as some fans have said. Yes, he had a couple mental lapses in the field, but I can live with that given his production. At this point he may be smart to wait things out, and when some starting 2B gets injured, he could be a nice option as a mid-season signing.
  4. They may not be making a ton in salary their first three seasons (or whatever it works out to), but many of these guys get pretty nice signing bonuses out of the draft. How much money has Jeremy Jeffress gotten in exchange for being suspended twice? I'm not trying to pick on him specifically, but that is just one example. And I also go back to how other teams have reportedly resented the Brewers for "overpaying" pre-arby players. Let's also keep in mind that other guys besides Braun have been apparently offered very large contracts to buy out their arbitration and early FA years. It's their own fault if they're now jealous or resentful of the situation. They had their chance and turned it down.
  5. Well, I guess it's good they didn't bother signing him to a contract then.
  6. The Brewers pay their pre-arby guys on a scale that is reportedly more generous than what other teams use, so I'm not sure there is a valid complaint there.
  7. Prince's dismissal of any contract talk after Melvin said he wanted to look into it Where are you getting this from, by the way? Was there something recently in the news that I missed?
  8. I'm not sure why the Cubs are always ranked ahead of us in these things. I think they're going to be pretty bad this year, personally.
  9. Well, Boras has had a few misses, but he did get a huge deal for Hollilday. There's probably been some other successes I'm forgetting off hand. What he did in regards to Damon is pretty laughable, though. His old tactics certainly don't seem to be working any more. Teams have wised up, and aren't shelling out huge money for non-elite players due to the economy.
  10. Yeah, I mentioned this in the Fielder thread the other day. It seems like some of Boras' clients haven't been doing well this year. You mentioned Washburn, and Damon is of course still out there. Lopez would probably be best taking a decent one year deal at this point, hope to have a strong year again, and then hopefully set himself up for a multi-year deal next off-season.
  11. Everything I've heard seems to indicate that the Giants are dead set against trading Bumgarner. I don't blame them either. Can never have too much young quality pitching, it seems.
  12. The more I think about it, I really don't want to see Fielder leave after 2011 and just get comp picks. With the Brewers' luck, they won't even be first rounders. We've been screwed over many times in this regard (Linebrink, Sabathia, Sheets, etc).
  13. That's basically what I alluded to in my post. However, one thing to keep in mind is that this could be Hoffman's last season as a Brewer (or even as an MLB player). Hawkins is signed through next season, but the dollar amount is not all that high. Riske will also be off the books. Hopefully by next season we'll have some cheap young quality talent in the bullpen so that Melvin won't have to spend that much money on relievers.
  14. I guess it all really comes down to what sort of payday Prince is looking for. If he's looking to do a somewhat shorter contract now (say 4-5 years), with the mindset that he'll be in line for another monster payday when he's about 30 (a stance which could very well make him overall more money over the course of his career), it might be very doable for Milwaukee. If he and Boras are going to be dead set on looking for a blockbuster 8-10 year deal once he hits free agency, then the Brewers should probably say, "Good luck in your future endeavors."
  15. Well, while I follow what Crew07 is saying, I do think there is some evidence that yes, Melvin is getting more efficient with his spending as evidenced by this past off-season. While he did spend some decent money on Wolf, Hawkins, and Hoffman, he also significantly went on the cheap at catcher, CF, and shortstop.
  16. I've always taken the booing of former Brewers by the fans at Miller Park as more of a razzing thing then being really malicious by the fans. I think it's more of a "This guy used to be a Brewer, let's boo him in good fun", then a "This guy is a traitor, let's boo him because we hate his guts", type of thing. At least that is how I feel about it.
  17. I agree. He has a lousy career ERA and WHIP at this point. He just overall has not been a good pitcher so far. No team is going to give up much for him. Like you said, I think we just have to hope he can put together a serviceable season in 2010.
  18. It's not really a matter of "if" they can do it in my mind. Clearly, if Prince isn't opposed to staying here, they could put a huge offer on the table and get him to sign it. The issue is if that would be good for the team in the long run. It's tough to be competitive if you have one player taking up 20-25% of the payroll each year. Not impossible, but very difficult.
  19. I see Felipe Lopez just fired Boras. Maybe he can talk Fielder into doing the same. That's probably the only realistic chance we have of signing him beyond 2011.
  20. danzig hits the nail on the head there. It's like big market fans get to enjoy a much higher level of fan experience than us small market fans. It's also plain easier to be a fan of a large market team (they get to keep their stars longer, get to sign more and better free agents, more media coverage, much higher chance at making the playoffs, etc). We're basically second class citizens in the world of MLB, and that just plain out and out sucks. That said, like I've said elsewhere, I've basically accepted the fact that the Brewers will probably never win a World Series in my lifetime, unless the economics of the game change dramatically. It is just too much of a long shot to dream of.
  21. Not to get too sidetracked, but I don't get why so many have dumped on the Hawkins signing. I think he is going to be a nice asset to have around this season.
  22. Booing and cheering are a part of sports. Most of the time I will not boo my team's players, but if the team has a really bad inning (giving up 5 runs in a row or something like that) or someone does something stupid or lazy, fans have an accepted right to boo. It's part of the game. Yes, I do agree though it is dumb to boo a slumping player. It's not like they don't know they are struggling.
  23. Supposedly Jenkins is trying to make a comeback this year. Haven't heard much about it, though.
  24. Maybe the females on the panel were overcome by Hart's lanky frame and gawky looks?
