  1. It's hard to imagine they have any payroll flexibility at this point. I would guess he means Mulder or someone similar. I can't picture how they would sign someone like Sheets or Bedard at this point.
  2. *shrug* Clearly there have been some missteps. They maybe didn't draft enough quality pitching, but they have also had some bad luck (Parra, Rodgers, Jeffress, etc, etc.) I guess if you keep pointing back to what should have been done four or five years ago, you'd never really be happy anyway. No one could predict we'd only have one playoff run by this point, and that's more than many teams have to talk about. At least we're not still among the Kansas City and Pittsburgh types of the league. Davis is a short term fix, and not a costly one. Next year's FA crop is supposedly better, and Melvin should have more payroll flexibility and perhaps some more palatable trading chips to deal at that point.
  3. It would have ruined his career if he moved back to his old time slot. It would have made him look like a total loser as far as being an entertainer and ratings draw.
  4. Lots of speed and great defense (possibly better than Cameron will be this season). He has lots of potential and is only 23. He was hyped and the center piece of the Johan Santana trade for a reason.
  5. Better than tickets for studs like Suppan and Looper...
  6. Don't forget that Counsell is still around too.
  7. I have been in the camp that says Mike Cameron is a bit overrated on this forum, but he definitely was not "awful offensively" last season. The big knocks on Cameron are generally that his batting average isn't stellar compared to his salary, and he isn't "clutch".
  8. I would be disappointed if Narveson doesn't make it as well. Is there any chance Suppan gets cut if he looks bad in spring training, regardless of salary? I know it probably won't happen, but our options look so much better now with the Davis signing.
  9. I think people are under selling McGehee a lot. I realize he had what was probably a career year last season, but I don't think he's going to drop off badly like some seem to think around here.
  10. Hopefully he still comes out to the Ultimate Warrior's theme music this season.
  11. Sounds reasonable enough. I was a bit worried Coffey would get a lot more based on his season last year. He's definitely worth $2 million at least.
  12. Any idea yet on where Conan will end up? The FOX speculation seems to have cooled somewhat, and Comedy Central seems like a pipe dream. ABC reportedly isn't interested. Very curious to see what he ends up doing.
  13. If they are looking at Villy possibly starting at all, I'd much rather see him "stretched out" in AAA then just thrown into the rotation at seemingly random like Macha did last season (though I don't blame him for that since he basically had no choices).
  14. Yeah, it seems like they could sell a lot of "Milwaukee" road jerseys if they went that route. I don't know if not announcing it now means it won't happen. They could be saving something like that for their "On Deck" event. Just speculation on my part. They could be saving it for the 2011 season too, though (they probably don't want to have too many alternates out at once). I have to believe there will be one eventually, as I remember hearing rumblings about it in the past.
  15. Just heard Brian Anderson on "The D-List" this afternoon. Someone called and asked him about Prince. He insinuated that Melvin may already be working on an extension with Boras, but that Melvin and the Brewers are being tight lipped and absolutely will not get into "negotiating through the media" with Boras. He also said that Mark Attanasio is adamant about not trading Fielder and wants to keep him here. He said that Attanasio loves Prince. Might not mean much, but it's interesting to hear.
  16. I thought I had read Riske could be ready very early in the season? I might be wrong...
  17. Did you get confused and mean Sheets? As far as Mulder, he isn't throwing off a mound yet. They probably will still sign him to a minor league deal, but if he actually makes it to the majors this season, it's gravy at this point.
  18. My guess is the Mets. They've had a disappointing off-season so far and signing Sheets would give a morale boost to their fan base. If the Mets tank early this season, Omar Minaya is probably going to get the axe.
  19. That's an interesting scenario you propose, but I'm not sure the Brewers really need a 4th OF at this point. I can't think of any off hand that the Brewers could trade for, either...I mean a guy that could offset the salary, since no team is going to trade for Suppan and take his entire contract (or even the majority of it).
  20. Slight overpay, IMHO, but it's not like LAA can't really afford it.
  21. I suspect Melvin is essentially done this off-season. Maybe some sort of trade could happen yet, but I think it will be relatively minor one. I think any extra dollars he has to spend (if any at all), will be kept in his back pocket for a mid-season trade.
  22. Yeah, supposedly the "no replays thing" is to protect the umpires and keep the crowd under control. It doesn't seem to be an issue in the NFL, though.
  23. He had a 4.12 ERA last year. That would have helped the Brewers a ton this past season. It's been repeatedly discussed that Davis is some kind of "freak of nature" when it comes to his WHIP being high compared to the results he delivers. He'll walk guys, but he doesn't give up homers either. Ultimately the hope in the rotation relies in Parra living up to his hype and potential, and Gallardo improving incrementally. If we're basing our playoff expectations on a serviceable lefty making about $5 million in 2010, then we're really in trouble.
  24. This is a pretty big exaggeration if I ever heard one.
