  1. Who would seriously pay $100 for a Pete Rose autograph? He has probably been one of the most prolific signers out there. There's no way that is a good value...oh well.
  2. That's true, at least to a point. With the addition of the second Wild Card spot, more teams are holding out, trying to see if they can truly contend, later than they would have in past seasons. Usually things don't start moving until after the All-Star break anyway.
  3. From a conversation I had with a friend last night, who I didn't even realize still followed wrestling: Sounds like more and more rumors are coming out that TNA is either at the end of its rope, or Jeff Jarrett might be taking it over again. Anyone here know what's up?
  4. Just because Melvin says it, doesn't mean it's true. He could sit on them and find no offers in the off-season. There's a certain risk/reward for sitting on your assets too long as well. Has anyone done any analysis of that? It's probably hard to quantify. It does seem like pitching is usually more in demand mid-season than position players, though.
  5. I just don't see how Doug and/or Mark can honestly be looking at this team right now and saying, "Yeah, with a couple tweaks, we can be right back in the thick of things next season." I mean, really, what positive signs are we seeing on the field? We don't have a single starter batting over .300, we don't have a starting pitcher with more than four wins, and our lowest ERA guy is Jimmy Nelson with a 4.34 ERA. What is there to really "build around" next year? Ramirez will be gone. Parra will be gone. Lind will probably be fine if we keep him around. Gomez will be in the final year of his contract. Braun and Lucroy will both be another year older and possibly more prone to injury. Segura, Davis, and Gennett aren't exactly All-Stars. Am I just plain missing something here?
  6. Day game baseball on a Saturday...gotta love it. Nice play there by Lucroy for an out.
  7. I agree. Lucroy is a very good player, and seems to be fairly popular...but is he a "draw" like Braun was pre-PED scandal, or Prince Fielder when he was here? No, sorry, he's not.
  8. Is that thing actually still around? I don't remember off hand.
  9. Everyone has pretty much agreed for a while now that Jack Z. did a great job drafting hitters, but not so much with pitchers. Part of that was the organizational philosophy at the time though...back in the early to mid 2000's, the team decided to focus on drafting quality hitters first.
  10. The actual dog I don't mind...but all the merchandise and now the mascot version of Hank are extremely over the top and unnecessary. How many mascots does one team need? We currently have eight at this point (five racing sausages, Bernie, Barrelman, and "Hank").
  11. Uh...no. Just no. I swear if some people had their way, there would be like 10 players in the Hall of Fame, based on some insanely high artificial standard.
  12. I used to think he should be allowed back in after a certain period of time...but I guess as I've gotten older I've taken a harsher stance. This pretty much seals it for me. Let him in after he's passed on.
  13. While I was in favor of those trades at the time (Sabathia, Greinke, Marcum), I've been saying for the last two off-seasons that it was time to trade off some players and rebuild the farm system. I was also vocally against the Lohse signing, mainly due to giving up the draft pick. What happened in 2008 and 2011 didn't need to mean things would be allowed to get this bad, both at the MLB level and with the farm system. We could already be on the cusp of another run of contention, if Melvin had been more proactive. If the owner is being meddlesome and turning into a baseball version of Herb Kohl, then I guess that's another problem entirely. It's probably not one that's really solvable either.
  14. I agree. I personally felt that he was outstanding on the radio, and had hope that maybe he would someday replace Uecker in the booth. I suppose such thoughts are trivial now. It's so hard to understand why things like this happen sometimes.
  15. Very sad to hear. Sounds like a horrible situation. At least the couple's son was apparently physically unharmed.
  16. I still don't get how Doug Melvin hasn't been fired. Even if the owner sincerely believes this horrible team and disastrous seasons aren't the GM's fault, don't you have to at least demote him simply to appease the fans at this point?
  17. Tuned into WTMJ after the game yesterday...whoever the talking head was, was babbling on about how "maybe the Brewers should have chosen to build around Prince Fielder long term instead of Ryan Braun." Of course, completely ignoring that the Brewers tried to give Fielder a long term contract and he wouldn't have any of it. I know sometimes these guys have to talk nonsense at length to fill airtime...but the revisionism was pretty bad.
  18. Surely for this instance, MLB was using some kind of tracking system. A-Rod's potential 3,000th hit ball is too valuable not to do so with.
  19. I understand everyone has hobbies, but the idea of guys who are in their 20's and 30's who obsess over catching as many baseballs as possible is just really distasteful to me. I'd rather see a kid get a ball at a game, rather than some guy who's going to brag about it on his blog and then probably sell it later.
  20. I disagree. All those paper ballots are a huge waste. I'm glad they've done away with them. Personally, I always found it silly that they were already handing them out like three weeks into the season, and you always have guys on the ballot who are already on the DL for the year. It was an antiquated system. I do like the idea of weighted voting...make the fan vote count for 1/3, player vote count for 1/3, and coaches/managers vote count for 1/3.
  21. I'm with you right there. I think if you judge Melvin over the context of his tenure, he has accomplished some positives...but, if you look at it over the context of baseball history, the shine has definitely worn off. I really wonder what Mark Attanasio is thinking. I saw him at Miller Park last Saturday. I can't imagine he is happy at all.
