  1. I think Narveson proved he has ability, but I think what MNBrew is saying is that it's unreasonable to count on him as a full time starter at this point.
  2. Cameron isn't relevant to the discussion. Cameron was more of a stopgap measure to fill a need after Hall somewhat faltered in CF. Fielder is more of a piece that you can build an entire offense around (with Braun, of course). My earlier point was that we already got Braun at a discount. If we can't keep Fielder somehow, I'll be pretty disappointed. If it comes down to Boras leading him to greed and demanding that he hit free agency and sign for the highest dollar amount possible, I'll somewhat understand. However, if a genuine effort isn't made to try and re-sign him, I think it will be a mistake. We already have Braun at a discount...if we can sign Fielder for $15-20 million per year for 5-6 years, I don't think it should throw the team's payroll off. They can build around Braun and Fielder with young cheap guys like Escobar, Gomez, McGehee (maybe not a long term solution, but we'll see how he does this year), Gamel, Lawrie, Salome/Lucroy, etc. Shouldn't we get to sign at least one of our home grown guys to a legitimate market value long term deal? If not, I have to ask again...what was the point of all this build up? Even the vaunted Twins have re-signed Morneau and are trying to re-sign Mauer. Why can't Braun and Fielder be our two cornerstones for the next five or six years? This team was willing to make a special exception for Sabathia...maybe they should do the same for Fielder.
  3. You could well be onto something there. One has to only point to someone like Nelson Cruz to start the next "hot trend".
  4. Why does anyone want Garland? I still don't get it.
  5. I'm not sure why anyone here thinks Byrnes brings anything someone already on the roster does not. Maybe he could throw his dog into Lake Michigan, but entertainment value doesn't translate into wins.
  6. We got lucky and locked up Braun long term to a below market deal...if we can't ever lock up any young player like Prince long term, is there really any point to all of this? Is the point just to be "competitive" without ever having a real chance to win anything?
  7. Narveson probably won't be able to hold out as a starter for an entire season.
  8. Thanks for the update, I appreciate it.
  9. This has to be an awfully lonely torch you're carrying at this point. Maybe it wasn't the "smart" move, but the 25+ year playoff drought was incredibly sad and pathetic (longest in all of pro sports, I think?). Unacceptable, really. It had to be broken, and it was. Too bad you can't accept that fact. I enjoyed the playoff run in '08, even if it was relatively short.
  10. Yeah, Prince faces a glut of similar 1B type free agents, and a possible MLB work stoppage in the near future. Prince might be wise to consider re-signing with the Brewers if they present him a "fair" offer.
  11. Yeah, while I do think one more SP is needed, I really only want to see any of those three signed to a one year deal. I guess I could swallow Davis or Washburn signing for like 2 years and $8 million total or so, if that is what it takes. I firmly believe Melvin isn't going to do something stupid and sign any of them to an unwarranted three year deal. It's become obvious that signing mediocre SPs to longer term deals just doesn't work out, especially for teams like Milwaukee.
  12. I guess I just come back to the fact that I believe it makes more sense to go into April with a strong rotation than with a questionable one, and praying you can somehow hold out to July for a trade that may or may not be there. Hope is not a plan.
  13. We have Gallardo under team control for four more seasons (if I'm not mistaken). There really isn't that much urgency there compared to Prince.
  14. I have some relatives that are seemingly very difficult to make plans with. My wife's parents live way up north (a good four hour drive). We have known for the past week+ that they were going to be driving my broth-in-law back down here this weekend, as he goes to a nearby college and classes are starting up next week. We were under the impression that they were going to be staying with my sister-in-law and her husband in Waukesha. So, of course, what happens? This morning we find out they hadn't finalized plans yet. My wife calls her sister, and she claims she thought they were staying at their aunt & uncle's (who also live near by). So it's a big back and forth all morning. My wife offers to let them stay here, but notes we'd have to change plans as we were originally planning to have MY sister and her husband over for dinner tonight. So they decide they're going to book a hotel nearby. My own mother has an "in" with one of the local hotels and access to a very nice discount. So I call my mom and make a reservation through her for the discount. My wife calls her parents and lets them know. So everything is set, right? No, wrong. A little while they call back, and it ends up they're staying with my sister-in-law in Waukesha after all. Argh! This really goads me. Their family needs better communication skills, I guess.
  15. Yeah, I don't think trading some guys in late August would have been a bad idea. July was a different story, though. The economic reality is that the Brewers rely on ticket sales for quite a bit of their revenue. If they want to field a competitive team, doing a July fire sale would have had negative consequences for this season.
  16. "as the leader of the players union, Glavine was never shy to play the "it's a business" card ....well Tommy, you wanted it & you got it!" I didn't realize Glavine had headed the MLBPA. If so, that makes me smile a bit. I think from a PR standpoint the Braves probably didn't handle his situation in best fashion though. However, I do think players should learn that if they're going to pull the "it's just business" card, they should expect harsher treatment in the future.
  17. While they were 4 GB in the division, I think the Cards and Cubs had enough question marks that a run at the top of the standings was not an outlandish thought. If Melvin could have gotten a decent starting pitcher via trade (like, oh, Randy Wolf as an example), it could have made a difference down the stretch. Remember that this team still finished 80-82 despite horrid starting pitching.
  18. Yeah..."feared" implies more like feeling or opinion than hard data. If they had done a survey of the top pitchers in the league and most answered that they "feared" Braun the most, that would be a little more accurate.
  19. *bump* Was just talking about this with someone yesterday. Does anyone know if this place actually opened yet, or when it is supposed to? All the references I find online are from back around October.
  20. I see the Mets signed Maine for $3.3 million this year, plus a couple hundred thousand in incentives. I think that makes him much more tradable, if the Mets are looking to go that route.
  21. He looks more like a washed up guy on the edge of retirement than someone due to turn things around. I don't see why we need him with guys like Gerut, Heether, and Iribarren around.
  22. I'm more of the thought that you do everything you can before the season, and spend up to your limit. I'd rather go into April strong, then go into April questionable. Also, if you set money aside, you could be looking for a needed trade that isn't there. Isn't that basically what happened this past July? Melvin desperately tried to add starting pitching, everyone knew he needed starting pitching, and he came away with Claudio Vargas. I really don't want to see that situation play out again.
  23. Plus if you tick off Fielder he'll try to bust into your locker room after the game.
  24. Good discussion. Supposedly Melvin was going to approach Boras about an extension for Prince this month. So far it seems we have heard nothing in regards to that. I think it would be worthwhile. I just don't know if Satan, er, Boras, will allow Prince to sign anything that buys out his free agency years. However, he would be wise to look ahead to the glut of 1B types that will be on the market soon, as well as a possible work stoppage if talks going into the next CBA fall apart. I don't think giving Prince a deal approaching $20 million/yr is out of line...he is a special offensive player that isn't easily replaced. I also agree with your premise that the team can surround Braun and Fielder with cheaper younger talent and still probably be competitive.
  25. You could tell that after Kimmel made his first crack at Leno, Jay was probably thinking: "Why did I have this guy on again?"
