    Yeah, I look forward to seeing what he has. Can anyone more knowledgable comment on what to expect from Axford as far as "stuff," etc?

    ESPN played the clip of the celebration a couple times on Sportscenter this morning and seemed to think it was pretty amusing. Didn't say anything about it being "unsportsmanlike", etc. So I think the criticism is mostly limited to Cardinals Nation.

    Yeah, what a nit picky thing to whine about. Cardinals fans have shown their true colors this season, and they don't look good. I will be actively rooting against them the rest of the way.

    Yeah, not a great one last night. Cameron's defense was really lacking last night. The fans got on him for letting that first hit drop, and probably rightfully so.

    Hardy would still be starting if we wouldn't have drafted Escobar Not to nit pick, but Escobar was signed as an amateur free agent when he was about 16 in Venezuela. I still feel strongly, more and more, that the team has to build around these cheap young guys if we have any hope of trading for or signing decent starting pitching. We need salary room to do that, and trading guys like Hardy who are making several million next year just makes too much sense. Yes, it would be nice if we were like Boston or New York and could keep both somehow, but we can't realistically do that. Escobar is going to be very good, in my opinion, based on what I've seen so far. He's young and he's going to make mistakes...people soon forget how many errors Rickie Weeks had in his rookie season, or how bad Hardy's bat was his first year. Escobar will go through some growing pains, but he should continue to develop as long as Macha actually plays him on a regular basis.

    One of the enjoyable bright spots this season has been the surprising play of Casey McGehee, who of course was a waiver pick up from the Cubs. We all know he just had a tremendous series against the Cardinals, getting key hits off some tough pitching. He's currently hitting around .300 with an .870 OPS, in 264 ABs, all despite supposedly having some injury issues. Obviously he's had a great year, and will be 27 next season, so he should be entering his prime years. The question is, what to do with him next season? Will the Brewers look at him to be their Opening Day third baseman, perhaps leaving Gamel in AAA to get some more seasoning under his belt? Is McGehee trade bait for another team? Or is there a possibility he'll be transitioned to 1B in the future when Prince Fielder is eventually traded? Discuss.

    Cameron has been as valuable as Mark Texeria this year. Sorry, but I just do not believe that at all.

    Escobar has "been crap?" Really? I would disagree. "Small sample" and all that.

    If we're banking on Manny turning it around like Cliff Lee did...well, I don't think that's much of a plan. He's looking more like a #5 pitcher at best, not the #2/3 type that some had predicted previously. Based on actual results, he's been basically our worse starter this season, even worse than the much maligned Jeff Suppan. I'm not saying trade him for a bag of balls, but I think if the right opportunity comes up, you have to seriously look at it.

    I just don't know if it's fiscally wise to pay him that much next year. He's going to be 37 next season. Don't people anticipate him declining a bit? I know he's playing very well this year, but at some point he's going to start slipping.

    One of the union officials (at least I think that's who it was) was talking on 620-WTMJ this morning, and basically said he felt a "NO" vote was right because "In my heart I know they're just going to move within five years anyway". I can sort of see what he meant, but at the same time, I would think having my current job for up to five years, giving me time to plan ahead, would be preferable to losing my job right now or within a year.

    But perhaps something almost as good for much less...and use the savings on pitching. The Brewers have Bourgeois, Hart (arguably), Cain (granted, he's probably at least half a season away yet due to his injury), maybe even Weeks as potential center fielders. I'm probably forgetting a name or two. They could always swing a trade or sign a cheap free agent type to fill in the gap. I'd just hate to see the Brewers hamstrung to get pitching for next season because they're paying an aging vet like Cameron $8-10 million again.

    I'm agreeing with that more and more, CheezWizHed. That's why I'm leaning towards the "trade Prince now" camp, though I would hate to see it. But, if we're going to trade Prince, you either have to get a 1B type in return, or probably keep Gamel and McGehee and move one to first base.

    Really the Brewers should let Kendall go, let Looper go, let Wheathers go and let McClung go and take that $16m and get something actually worthwhile. This is the strategy I'd like to see. You can put Cameron in that category too. Enough of the "Let's retain guys because they're here and nice guys, even if we maybe have cheaper options in AAA" route.

    Melvin is probably already drawing up a contract extension for him.

    The problem is if you spend all this money on veteran players currently on the team, that doesn't leave a lot of financial flexibility to improve the pitching staff. It's great Cameron and Kendall want to come back, but I'm not sure it's the smart move at this point.

    I've said before, I'm willing to take a punt on this season. Things just didn't work out, and that's going to happen. Heck, it's happening with the Cubs and Red Sox and others this year, and they have much higher payrolls than Milwaukee. I will believe that Melvin did what he could to try and improve the team. A lot of people who seem to have more inside information on this board claim that Melvin was working down to the trade deadline wire, trying to procure a top tier pitcher. It just didn't work out. The cynics from before Opening Day were proved right that the rotation wasn't enough as constructed to get through the season. It's all basically water under the bridge at this point, though. We all know Suppan is crummy and that Bush's injury shouldn't have hamstrung the team as much as it did, but it's not like rehashing all of that changes much at this point. What I won't accept, and I feel a lot of others won't accept...is if this off-season's approach is similar to the last one. I think the fan base deserves to see the team take another shot at the playoffs (an honest one with an honest rotation) after drawing over 6 million fans in two seasons. I think Attanasio has been a great owner so far, but it might be nice to see the team spend a bit over budget to put a real playoff caliber rotation together. Record ratings and attendance, a new TV deal, lots of sponsorships...there should be some money sitting around. They have the offense, they just need to improve the pitching staff. I would think the benefits of making the playoffs again would outweigh a relatively small financial loss in the long run.

    I think people are too quick to say that attendance will be down next year. Attanasio isn't stupid...he knows people will be looking for improvements. The expectation will be to improve the team for next season, and with a couple key acquisitions in the off-season, they could sell a lot of tickets before Opening Day again. The economy is supposedly improving, so that could help as well. But yeah, it's quite a feat, and speaks volumes about the quality fan base we have here in Wisconsin. Everyone talks about the "great baseball fans" in St. Louis, Boston, etc. I think the Milwaukee fans should be included in that list.

    Parra isn't all that young anymore, and his "potential upside" seems to be shrinking with every poor start he puts up. I'm not necessarily advocating that the Brewers trade the guy, but I think people need to be realistic and trim back their expectations of Manny Parra accordingly.

    I think that was one of those cases we saw much of last off-season, where a guy was sitting out there waiting for money that simply wasn't on the table due to the poor economy.

    Yeah, according to the comments on that message board, the Wells signing seems to have been more of a PR move to appease the fanbase than anything else. I hope the Brewers never fall into that trap.

    Hardy lost something this year. Whatever that was, I hope he figures it out for his own sake. But he's going to have to do that on another team. Because like it or not, Escobar is here to stay. If for no other reason than he's something like $4M cheaper. (That's $4M they can hopefully spend on pitching.) It's a bonus that he's one of the top prospects in baseball. This is exactly how the Brewers need to operate going forward. They need to be more ruthless with their players and more efficient with their salaries. Hopefully keeping Hardy down the minimum of 20 days, and trading Hall to the Mariners, signals a change in philosophy for the organization as a whole. While the fans may not like it, more frequent roster turnover and promoting young cheaper players, then spending the savings on pitching and the like, may be the only way the Brewers can compete in a division with the Cubs and Cardinals.
