  1. $3 million yet this year? That sounds rather high. He'd at least eat some innings and maybe prevent injuries to this decimated bullpen, I guess.
  2. Why can't we have both? I mean, have Escobar as the everyday SS, and get an extra service year out of Hardy, thus increasing his trade value? Seems like a win-win for the Brewers to me. Seriously, the Brewers have gotten so screwed over in the past year in so many ways, getting an advantage just one time would be a pretty refreshing change of pace.
  3. Why does the team always have to bend over for the player? Why can't it be the other way for a change, especially when the player has been bad?
  4. They should do what's best for business. If an extra year of service time for Hardy means getting a better pitcher in a trade, they should do what is best for the team. Hardy has cost them enough with his poor play this season.
  5. FWIW, Haudricourt just posted right before 5 PM that Bourgeois and Escobar aren't even in Milwaukee yet, and it's uncertain if they'll be available to play tonight or not.
  6. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/53065632.html Sounds like Attanasio was not happy with the team's performance, and acknowledges how much fans have been supporting the team. "It makes me and Doug feel we have to give 100% effort on our part to give those fans a winner," he said. "We had 37,000 fans last night watching us get blasted by the Padres. Not to mention the people watching on TV, listening on radio, following the game on their communicators. That's not fun for anybody. Those fans deserve a better performance than that." "Completely performance-based decisions," he said. "Doug and his staff evaluate these things in a painstaking manner. Doug may have said, from his standpoint, he may have wondered if he was too patient. I have no issues with the amount of time he took to make the decision."
  7. (Posted this in another thread, but it's more relevant here). The more I think about it, I really hope JJ Hardy stays down the minimum 20 days (or whatever it is). If the team is committed to Escobar, they will get much more value trading JJ Hardy with two years service time left instead of just one. I don't care if it makes him angry, his poor play this season has made me angry enough.

  9. Yeah, I'm not sure if I was overly impressed with some of the things he said...it kind of seemed like he was disappointed by these changes, more than anything.
  10. "We should've had this in the dugout." What was that about? Macha mad at someone?
  11. It's somewhat understandable not starting Escobar tonight, given he has to travel today, etc. It sounded like he'll definitely start tomorrow though.
  12. I look at it this way. One of two things can happen. Escobar plays well, the team decides to trade Hardy, and Escobar starts next year, like people were predicting. Escobar struggles, Hardy comes back next season if they can't get much for him in trade, and Escobar continues to develop in AAA. I don't think either scenario is that horrible.
  13. Melvin's comments in the press conference mentioned wanting to see a more "aggressive style". So I would think that is a definite possibility. With Escobar, it would be foolish not to have him attempt some steals.
  14. If Escobar plays well, and Hardy staying in AAA can garner an extra year of team control, then they have to keep him down there. I don't think you can come up with any excuse why they should do otherwise, other than "To be nice guys to J.J." This game is a business first, and you have to do what makes the best business sense to the franchise.
  15. http://michaelwitzel.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/bobs-big-boy-statue-222x300.jpg That reminded me of this.
  16. It's all right Luke, you got it mostly right. I don't think anyone is going to railroad you off the site. Things happen.
  17. Managers and coaches are hired to be fired. It happens with all teams. I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep. I'm sure Billy Castro is a nice guy...hopefully he gets another job with the Brewers, or a chance somewhere else in baseball.
  18. Agreed. Also, thank goodness I've never heard of a single GM in baseball citing WAR as a reason to keep or not keep a player...
  19. Just started. Kind of low sound for some reason, or maybe it's just my PC.
  20. You're looking only at one stat and being disingenuous. He's clearly not a power hitter and has never been billed as one. He's hitting over .315 and OBP over .350. Sure those numbers will drop, but I can't see him being worse than Hall offensively.
  21. Good lord, I can't believe all the hand wringing over some of these moves here. The team was sucking, and everyone was screaming for changes to happen. You know, accountability, etc. Now that it's happening, everyone thinks Attanasio has a gun to Melvin's head, or that Melvin is desperately trying to save face? How about they are making fairly logicial (albeit aggressive) moves to try to salvage the season and/or see what they have for next season? At any rate, these moves give me a good reason to pay attention to this team after last night's massacre, and for that I'm happy.
  22. With the way Bourgeois has been hitting, I would think he earned a chance. Isn't that what people want to see happen? Transitioning from CF to RF is not a big deal. They could possibly have Cameron play in RF a few games if they're that worried Bourgeois can't handle it.
  23. The idea that Attanasio is behind these moves is pure speculation at this point. Let's keep all this in mind. Melvin isn't an idiot. He saw how badly the team has been performing and made some moves that will at least help prepare the team for next season, if not improve things a bit for the remainder of the year.
  24. Yes, unless some kind of trade can be worked out.
  25. The other point being ignored is that Hardy's defense has been somewhat shakey lately, too. I'm excited to see if the hype around Escobar's glove bears out.
