  1. Is it possible a waiver trade with Hardy is coming, and they just did this to clear space on the 25 man for Escobar?
  2. I agree. I will always have a soft spot for Hall, but he's a lost cause as a Brewer at this point. See what Bourgeois can do. I'm excited by these moves...the team isn't being complacent (something people were crying about just this morning), and they are at least shaking things up.
  3. As a kid I loved Bosio, and he was the first autograph I ever got. I am excited to see what he can do as pitching coach. I can't blame Castro for what has gone on this season, but maybe a change can help.
  4. Just received on Twitter from Tyler Barnes. "Bill Hall DFA, Jason Bourgeois contract purchased from Nashville."
  5. Maybe Kendall's intimidating psycho killer stare has made them start him virtually every day out of fear. That's the only other rationalization I can come up with.
  6. I think Hardy can be explained in that they are desperately hoping he will get hot and increase his future trade value a bit. Also, Counsell cannot start every day at short, due to his knees, and they probably don't want to call up Escobar yet. That is at least tolerable. Kendall is a free agent after this year, and will hopefully not be back again. There's no good reason for him to be starting this much. None.
  7. I agree with TLB's points. Most players are streaky...it's just Cameron is having some good streaks, while a player like Hardy hasn't hit any of those hot streaks for most of this season. I think a lot of Brewers fans are going to start to miss Cameron in a year or two when an experimental CF in Weeks or Hart is out there missing deep fly balls, or someone like Patterson is shoved into the role of starting CF and hits around .220. Some fans out there are just idiots when it comes to evaluating how good a player is...I think some expect every player to hit around .300 with 30 home runs a year. It's exacerbated by the fact that some radio pundits spout off about how bad he is.
  8. I know everyone is salivating for Salome and LuCroy, but I don't get the sense this season would be the right point to call them up (at least until September). That said, there's no reason Rivera shouldn't be starting at least twice a week at this point. What is frustrating is Macha said he thought Kendall played too much last year, and he's been playing him as much as Yost did.
  9. Finally, we haven't done real well bringing outfielders to the majors either How can you say that when Braun and Hart are both starting OFs and products of the Brewers system? Cain was set back with an injury in spring training, IIRC...and Katin was never projected as a stud prospect. He just got some attention at the beginning of this year because he was putting up some big numbers at a somewhat advanced age for a minor leaguer, which is somewhat typical.
  10. I agree with both sides. I have worked in media (radio, though, not print), and it's not exactly an overly rewarding industry. But, I remember in college classes they would have DJs and such from local stations come in and say, "This isn't a good business to get into if you're in a committed relationship," etc. I took that advice well and made sure to stay in the area...and eventually got out of radio when I decided it wasn't something I wanted to do long term because I knew it wouldn't be the best for me and my wife. And I was in sales, not on-air...so it's not a direct correlation, but I think some of the same lessons apply. Most people who stay in media into their 40s are there because they truly do enjoy it, and are willing to continue making the trade offs necessary. So I won't feel sorry for them in that regard. People in their 40's and 50's can make career changes if they really want to.
  11. Tons of public money for a stadium, promises that we'd be competitive, years and years of terrible finishes that yielded top draft picks, a higher payroll with lots of cheap talent for DM to work with ..... and it looks like we've peaked with an 83-79 season followed by a 90-win season that was entirely due to riding a rented mule that pitched out of his mind for two months. Ouch. This kind of sums up my current feelings. If, a couple years from now, we look back and see that 90 win season with one playoff game win as the big highlight, I'll be pretty disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade last season for anything, but I thought that was going to be a turning point for this franchise. I really thought we could be competitive again this year. I knew the pitching rotation was questionable, but assumed Melvin would get some help. That did not happen, and next season's outlook is not looking very promising right now. You can't blame the injuries either, in my mind. The Cubs, Cards, etc. have all dealt with some significant injuries and it hasn't seemed to hamper them too much. Meanwhile the Crew is making the Padres and Nationals look like world beaters. Sad. The one thing that keeps hope alive for me is that I have to believe Mark Attanasio wants to field a winner again. I hope this off-season brings significant changes to the Brewers, one way or another.
  12. Nice to see Cam launch one and get the Crew ahead early. Let's keep it up.
  13. Haudricourt says in a blog update that Hardy hasn't even been offered on waivers yet. So the Boston rumors seem to be pretty bogus at this point. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/52994252.html
  14. What is meant by a "sequential lineup?" I don't think I've heard that term before.
  15. I know we've disagreed on this before and I don't want to rehash everything that's been already discussed to death in regard to Gamel's MLB stint. I would agree he was probably up too long, when it was apparent he would not play regularly after a certain point. That said, it would be disappointing if anytime Gamel faces a bit of career adversity, his productivity at the plate is going to go into the toilet like it is right now.
  16. Surprised there wasn't a topic on this yet. I got this info from MLB Trade Rumors. Brewers GM Doug Melvin said on 1250 WSSP in Milwaukee that he's glad he didn't go after some of the free agent arms that were available last offseason. Here's the clip and here are the details: Melvin admits that pitchers like John Smoltz and Oliver Perez were tempting, but says he's glad he resisted. The Brewers were interested in Jarrod Washburn at the deadline, but didn't have enough young pitching to complete a deal with the Mariners. The Brewers were in on the Roy Halladay sweepstakes, but were reluctant to give up Alcides Escobar and Mat Gamel. Melvin sounds hesitant to experiment with Rickie Weeks in center field. The Brewers will have some "some flexibility" to add free agents this offseason. Melvin expects the Red Sox to pursue free agent position players aggressively. As of today, Melvin says he's not motivated to move J.J. Hardy, but hints that the Brewers could move him after the season to make room for Alcides Escobar. Melvin's pleased with the progress 2009 first rounder Eric Arnett has made.
  17. You full well know that giving CC a contract like the Yankees gave him would have been financial suicide for the club long term. I would have loved to see it happen at the time, but knowing full well the team would have suffered, more than likely, down the line.
  18. Yeah, I agree with jjfanec. I could definitely see one of them getting traded this off-season in a package. If that's what is necessary to get a quality upper rotation pitcher, then I think they have to do it.
  19. Maybe he's distracted by his duties as a deputy... Seriously though...I had a sense this topic would be coming up soon enough on this forum. I don't really know what to say. It's not like he's really slumping. He's hitting just under .320 with a .390 OBP. .951 OPS. It seems like the standard criticism of any elite hitter around here is "he doesn't walk enough." He's on pace to easily surpass his walk total from last season. Hopefully he'll simply improve on it as he continues to mature as a player. After all, he's only 25. I'm guessing if some of those walks early in the season were scattered over the past couple months, no one would really be noticing. I do think the point he's probably been seeing more strikes is a good one.
  20. I think you're referring to Dye's line from last year. He's down slightly from that. Are you sure he won't continue to decline? He'll be 36 next season.
  21. I think I'd rather just bring Cameron back for another year, if possible.
  22. Chris Smith optioned to Nashville, according to Haudricourt's latest blog update.
  23. Maybe not from a practicality standpoint, but they probably should be. It can't possibly be argued that it's fair to have only a handful of teams being able to sign Japanese players. Also, I'm confused at the references to Ryan Braun earlier in this thread...the Brewers already do have him signed to a long term contract...they have him under control through 2015 at a very reasonable price. He'll be spending most of his peak years (if not all of them) with Milwaukee, barring an unforeseeable trade.
  24. If his name was Joe Schlubansky and he was pitching like this at his age, no one would give him a second look. He's just living off his name at this point.
  25. Biggest problem with either Arroyo or Harang is the money they're owed next season. I wonder if the Reds would be willing to take Bill Hall for one of them...even if we had to eat a bit of Hall's salary, it would be worth it. I don't know that the Brewers have the financial flexibility to do it, though.
