  1. Anyone else who did the SI subscription offer not get their game yet? I haven't gotten mine yet, but I realize it's only been about a week. Just curious.
  2. I'd guess the Brewers glory days are behind us until - say - 2019. OK, if that's not blatant hyperbole, I'd say you're being a bit pessimistic there. Also, Attanasio's business (which none of us have any insight on whatsoever) doesn't affect what the Brewers do. It's not like he's paying for the payroll out of pocket.
  3. "start declining once he hits his FA years". He'll be 28 then...do you really think he'll decline that significantly before 30 or so?
  4. Because he's never played there (as far as I know), and will not come close to matching Prince's production. He also looks like he could be an above average 3B, so I'd rather keep him there, rather than shoehorn him into a new position.
  5. They can't trade him before next season unless they decide to go into a complete rebuilding mode. The problem is they don't have anyone waiting in the wings to play first base (please don't say Gamel either). I hope they make more than a token effort to re-sign him before 2011, personally. Then if they are out of it by mid-2011, they could trade him at the All-Star break and probably still get a decent return. Keeping him for two more years ensures the team can stay competitive offensively for the next couple seasons...I'm not sure they will get enough in a trade to off-set his loss at this point.
  6. While I thought the opinions on Gallardo being overworked in the past were somewhat overblown, now that the team is realistically completely out of any playoff picture, there is simply no reason for Gallardo to be racking up that kind of wear on his arm anymore. Does it matter if we lose by 3 runs or 10 at this point? Melvin better be giving serious thought to what he wants to do for next year, and needs to tell Macha to manage for next year, or just fire him right now if he refuses.
  7. The thing with Counsell is that he's been so loyal, he may not want to leave Milwaukee. It's not like he's eating up that much money through the end of the season, and I'm not sure we would get that much for him. Either way I hope the Brewers talk about bringing him back...he's shown he can be a serviceable utility guy and even more this season.
  8. I'd love to get Lackey, but I wouldn't be surpised if the Angels end up re-signing, or maybe another big market club. He's probably the best pitcher that will be available as a FA. I also wonder if Toronto may try to re-sign Halladay now that they have money freed up because of Rios going to the ChiSox.
  9. I agree...especially considering how the team is supposedly following the much lauded Twins/A's model of success, as opposed to being like the Marlins or something.
  10. Well, at the time the Brewers were considering themselves still "in it", and hence the move was partly designed to kick the team in the pants and hopefully get them playing a bit better. That part clearly didn't work, but I don't think it was totally without merit.
  11. He controls many of the potential first round picks in any given year, and his hardball contract demands often mean teams have to pass on certain players they would normally draft because they can't afford them. The whole "signability" issue. There's also the fact that his tactics make it almost impossible for a team like the Brewers to retain a player like Prince Fielder, but that's another whole separate issue. I don't really hate the guy personally...he is very good at what he does, there is no denying that. If you look at his track record, he's actually made some pretty significant gaffes over the years, though. It's partly the owners' and commissioner's fault for not taking care of the draft situation much sooner. As far as some of the ideas here, I do like the idea of teams retaining control of players if they do go back to college or elsewhere. I'm not sure about trading draft picks...it seems to have reached a somewhat silly level in the NFL. I don't know whether or not I'd like to see that in MLB.
  12. Wait, so we could lose him after this season already?
  13. Yeah, I know Macha probably doesn't want to stretch the bullpen anymore, but since the playoffs are just a pipe dream at this point, there's no point in over taxing Gallardo right now.
  14. I have no idea what the hell Macha is trying to accomplish at this point.
  15. Maybe people will remember that if they ever see a man threatening her with a lead pipe.
  16. It will diminish the influence of people like Scott Boras on the draft, and that is only a plus, in my opinion.
  17. Thank goodness. It's about time. Why it's taken so long is beyond me, but the owners better be ready to fight the players.
  18. Guys, it was never seriously rumored to be for Harang. Just because a couple people on here threw the idea out as speculation, doesn't mean it was necessarily a real possibility. Gord Ash has some comments out that explain further.
  19. Haudricourt says the Brewers will end up saving about $1.3 million, so at least that's something.
  20. I like the lineup. Now win a game and don't get swept. You're playing the Pirates, darn it.
  21. Sounds like not much in the way of salary relief, but at least they got a pitcher for him, even if it's not a very high ceiling guy.
  22. Tyler Barnes just confirmed it's Hall for Flores on Twitter.
  23. It's up on MLB Trade Rumors. More info forthcoming. Edit: They now have up that Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times is reporting the Brewers will receive minor league pitcher Ruben Flores in return. EDIT: Title. -PF
  24. Given how both teams are playing right now, $1.00 sounds about right.
