  1. I think this is a good way to look at it at this point. This new info about LaPorta doesn't exactly change my opinion that the trade was well worth it, though. I guess I don't get why this is all only coming out now, though. I mean...I can't fathom the motivation for a MiLB guy being so stingy with autographs. Just seems very prima donna type behavior.
  2. I thought this was going to be some kind of amusing prank, but turns out to sound like a bunch of thugs just destroying private property. Hopefully they can catch at least some of them.
  3. Yeah, surprised to not see ESPN make a bigger deal about a possible replay issue. I'm sure if this was in a Yankees game, they would have been talking about this non-stop. I have a hard time getting too mad about this myself. This will be the kind of thing where something later in the season will break the Brewers' way. The way the offense was playing last night, I guess I never felt confident they were going to pull the win out to begin with. Of course, you just hate to lose when the other team doesn't really end up beating you. Hopefully they can just bounce back and get a win back tonight.
  4. I just have a hard time believing that Fielder is as "unvaluable" to the team as you are positing. He is going to put up huge offensive numbers again, and his defense seems to have gotten at least somewhat better than last year.
  5. You're ignoring the fact that we're still well set to contend for this season and possibly one or two more yet. We also have plenty of other prospects. We only traded one really key prospect and a couple more middling ones for Sabathia. It's not like Melvin cleared out the farm to get him. Also, we did win "something." We won the NL Wild Card. More than anything the Brewers have won in the last 25 years prior.
  6. I agree that Cofee and D.Falice should be in setup.
  7. The media is really being irresponsible and over blowing this thing, in my opinion. It's just something that's getting people over anxious, when the chances of it actually affecting the average person are probably pretty remote.
  8. Exactly. The point of sports is supposed to be trying to win something, at least every once in a while. I'd rather have taken that shot then go "Oh well, there's always next year, and we have more prospects that are a year or two away..."
  9. More classic games would be kind of cool, though if they only stuck to the last two or three years like they were doing this past off-season, it would get old quick. A weekly roundup show would be neat as well.
  10. I think you're making it less of a deal than it was. If we had traded for a player of lesser caliber than Sabathia, we probably would have missed the playoffs. Consequently, we'd still have the monkey on our backs of over 25 years without a post season appearance. That would suck, in my opinion. It was one of the longest playoff droughts in professional sports, which was pathetic. Yes, that wasn't all Melvin and Attanasio's fault, but they were stuck with the perception problem that in the minds many people, the Brewers were an also ran franchise. It was time to prove the franchise was legit, and win something. They did. All of the excitement and revenue generated for the team was huge, and is going to help them going forward. I guess I don't see how a Brewers fan who's been following the team for more than a couple years can say making the playoffs last year wasn't a big deal. I certainly wouldn't trade the excitement of watching that final game of the season, seeing Braun's huge homer, and then getting to attend my first baseball playoff game ever in my life (I'm almost 30, FWIW) and seeing Dave Bush beat the Phillies for anything.
  11. Yeah, then they could keep pretty much all of the revenue from it. It would be huge, I just don't know how viable something like that would be in Wisconsin, where customers have already had a bad taste in their mouths from stuff like the Big Ten and NFL Network fiascos.
  12. It would be funny to see, say, Ryan Braun strut down to first base after getting hit by a pitch.
  13. OK, if you are talking those kinds of dollars and structuring, then I can see it. Do you honestly think Gallardo would take it at this point, though?
  14. I wish some more details on this would come out...at least in terms of the basis for this "new deal."
  15. What I don't get is...what was wrong with his original swing? He seemed to do fine with it last year. I don't get the reason for the change.
  16. I agree. In the world of baseball's guaranteed contracts, it's much too risky to give him a contract at this point.
  17. So, will Rodriguez face any real consequences if this stuff is true? Could a suspension be looming? To me, the worse accusation is the thing about tipping pitches. Sure, it may "not have mattered" in a blowout situation...but tell that to the guy on the mound, who might be a reliever trying to hold on to his job in the majors.
  18. Who's the equivalent talent you'd be replacing Fielder with?
  19. Well, Sheets getting injured yet again was something out of the team's control. The Yankees signing both Sabathia and Teixeira was also out of the Brewers' control. I do agree that it will sting a bit if LaPorta becomes a stud everyday player for Cleveland. But I still think the benefits of finally making the playoffs again far outweigh the downsides for this franchise. I do agree there's not much point in rehashing potential playoff scenarios at this point...maybe we could have gotten lucky and gotten into the NLCS somehow, but I can't see how the Brewers would have gotten any further. I still think the "shine" of making the playoffs in '08 was so huge for this franchise, from a business and prestige standpoint. It showed everyone that this team is a legit force in the NL, and not just an also ran feeder team for the big boys.
  20. Yeah...I definitely think they shouldn't talk about anything sooner than before his first year of arbitration.
  21. I feel like I need to drive my own head through a wall any time someone questions the Sabathia trade at this point. Are we just supposed to hold onto all our prospects forever, regardless of what trades come up, just in case they might become a superstar, or some better trade might come up down the line? I wouldn't trade last season for anything. It was worth it...there's no guarantees that Laporta or Brantley will become stud everyday players anyway.
  22. Where the Brewers have some strength in regards to a potential trade is that if they are still in contention come mid-summer and decide to acquire another SP, there is likely to be more than just Jake Peavy on the market. For all we know, someone like Roy Halladay or Roy Oswalt could also be available. With the way the economy is, a lot of teams could be looking to slash payroll, making it a "buyer's market."
  23. That is quite the vague news article. Is this agreement an extension of the existing one (which ran through 2012 I thought)? Or does this completely replace it. Just really lacking in any details. Reading through the comments section on the JSOnline blog hurt my head, though.
