  1. The "You can't invite yourself back," comments were quite a while ago. I'm not sure how they're relevant to the current situation.
  2. I think the Mets will regret this by the second year, if I had to guess. And yes, I too wish Sheets would sign somewhere so people would quit bringing him up.
  3. I just don't get the Brewer mentality of trying to wait until June or July to add a needed piece, rather than doing it now and increasing the odds that they're actually, you know, still in the race in mid-summer. I would imagine that it could take more to get a Peavy in July than it would right now.
  4. It was a pretty good performance. I thought the audio mix could have been a bit more "aggressive", but it was light years better than that horrible Rolling Stones one a couple years back.
  5. Haudricourt notes in his blog comments that the Brewers did approach Sheets (I'm not sure when, but I think early January) after Smoltz and Penny signed their deals, asking if he would take a similiar, incentive laden contract. Casey Close said they weren't interested. So, the Brewers have made overtures twice to Sheets and been rebuffed, if you count the arbitration offer. I think it's time to accept that Sheets just doesn't want to be back in Milwaukee.
  6. I agree. I've only been to one Packers game ever, and while I enjoyed and appreciated the experience, I won't be rushing to go to another one because of the weather, and just the general lack of comfort. Maybe I'm spoiled by Miller Park, but the game I was at was in late August at Lambeau, and it was about 55, windy, and constantly drizzling the entire game. I think I'd rather stay home and watch on my home theater than do that again.
  7. Guys...I think turning this into a discussion of dumb people vs smart people is going way off course. I think it would be accurate to say that both dumb and smart people like various sports, and leave it at that. Honestly, claiming baseball fans are smarter than football fans or vice versa just smacks of elitism.
  8. I liked it, as per usual. I was actually laughing pretty hard at the Jack Black stuff. I guess they needed to do something to pad this episode out to an hour, and I'd rather see what they did then try to shoehorn them into the Office environment or something, like someone pointed out earlier here. To be honest, I was getting nervous to the end as I thought Michael was going to have a complete and total breakdown after the roast. They really need to start advancing his character a little bit somewhere, whether it's bringing back Holly or whatever. Poor guy doesn't seem to catch any breaks. Also, the preview of the Amy Poehler "spin off" show looks promising.
  9. Didn't they do this last time too, though?
  10. I think trying to choose a neutral site would lead to a lot of problems in and of itself. How do you go about "awarding" the site? What would the criteria be? Would it have to a dome stadium of some kind to guarantee the game is played? Would MLB look to areas outside the US as possible host sites (like the Boras' idea of going to Tokyo or something)? Personally I would hate the idea of Game 1 being anywhere but in the US or Toronto.
  11. I think it's partly a self fulfilling prophecy...if you give the Red Sox more attention, their games will get more ratings, and consequently so will any news related to them. Yes, I understand that ultimately winning cures everything, though. I will also give ESPN credit that their Yankees coverage seemed to tail off last season when it became clear they had no chance to make the playoffs.
  12. He's an old guy who has probably had more than his share of public attention. It's expecting a lot of someone to be "on" every single time they're in public or doing their job.
  13. I think the key thing to making any changes is institute something that is going to make the average players more money...right now the union doesn't seem to be serving the interests of the majority of their members. Yeah, guys like Tex and CC get their huge paydays, but how about the younger players? I think a minimum salary floor to curb a lot of the one sidedness in the spending right now. The international draft seems like such a no brainer that I don't understand why it hasn't happened yet. I believe the current agreement even has a provision to implement one.
  14. Well, personally, I would fall in that category...I am a very casual football fan. I watch the Packers games and that's about it. I know the names of the quarterbacks playing tonight, and that is about it. I will follow the game and enjoy it, but I'm not going to pretend I know everything about either team. While I am leaning toward cheering for the Steelers, do I ultimately care about which team wins? No, not at all.
  15. He generally answers follow up questions in his blog, in the comments section. I don't know...I think a lot of people expect way more of reporters than can reasonably be expected.
  16. Well, you have to accept that the World Series will never be as big as the Super Bowl, at least any time soon. It's just the difference of only having to promote one game versus a Best of 7 series. But they can certainly do better with it than they have been.
  17. Well, if they could just have the games start at like 7 PM CST, instead of 7:45 or whatever after all the hoopla, that would be a decent start. I do think adding a "halftime act" during the 7th inning stretch could be a great idea. I wouldn't be that excited about it personally, but it could pull in a lot of casual people. I'm sure a lot of non-football fans are tuning into the Super Bowl tonight to hear the Boss, for example.
  18. I actually agree with SeriesFinale...at least he generally knows what is going on with the MLB team...I don't look to the Journal-Sentinel for in depth MiLB coverage. Yes, Haudriciourt makes mistakes occasionally, but he is usually quick to correct them, at least.
  19. I thought Peavy's agent said after the last trade fiasco that they would basically waive the no trade clause, and there wouldn't be a team list, or something along those lines.
  20. Does anyone have link or info on what the snowfall was in December '08 compared to the year before? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
  21. Heard someone make a good point on the radio the other day, along the lines of, "Well, the Padres aren't going to win with or without Peavy at this point, so they may as well hold onto him until the trade deadline when they can probably get more for him." That is probably where they're going, I think.
  22. I think it's clear that even Boras misjudge the market. He thought teams would be willing to throw out lots of money, even to aging players, like they used to. That's just not the case anymore, and good for the teams for holding the line on that. Sure, the super elite players like Teixeira and Sabathia still go their big paydays, but an aging guy like Manny just isn't going to get some ridiculous 9 figure contract anymore. Too bad Sheets and his agent didn't realize earlier what Boras and his clientelle found out.
  23. Well, ESPN made it sound like it might be a national emergency when it was possible he might retire or sit out the season.
  24. Yeah, but I think most pitchers have those kind of performance clauses in their contracts. Probably most MLB players do. I remember Rob Dibble talking about how one of his contracts had a Cy Young provision in there, even though he himself knew he would never win it.
