  1. Offering him arbitration was a very low risk move. Even if he got injured again and was out most of the year, they would have only been out, what? 14 or 15 million at most? Then, worse case, they miss the playoffs, Sheets is gone, and the fans all blame Sheets "not earning his money." If he stays healthy and pitches well, then he's worth it, and they would still get a couple draft picks the year after (if I understand correctly). Basically a no brainer, as has been pointed out before.
  2. I hate snow...well, not totally hate it, but I'm already fairly tired of it, and it's only mid-December. I'm also surprised that all the predictions of how much snow we would get were actually accurate for a change. Usually they're screaming about getting a foot of snowfall, and then we maybe get half that. At least my snowblower finished our driveway before it stalled out while I was trying to finish our sidewalk. The chute and blades were all clogged with snow, so that's almost certainly the culprit. Couldn't get it restarted, but it probably just needs to cool down. I'm currently debating if I want to head out to get some work done or not...only have to drive about 15 minutes, but I'm not sure how well plowed the rest of the roads around here are as of yet. At least being self employed gives me the luxury of a choice. Also, some kind soul plowed the front part of our driveway, in order to take care of the neighbor's sidewalks, so kudos to you, mystery plow person!
  3. Yeah, but you never know, maybe posting about Melvin needing to get Sheets back to the Brewers ad nauseum will somehow help?
  4. Boy, bklyn, you're a real barrel of fun around here lately. "Good riddance, guy who helped us get to the post season for the first time in 26 years!"
  5. Well stated, MJL. I agree with everything you said. You have to give to get...the nice thing about both trades is that we didn't give up any immediately MLB ready players to get them (OK, I think Thatcher was up soon after, but that's about it). I'd gladly trade those guys all over again just to have had the experience of attending one playoff game at Miller Park. In retrospect, I think we would have been as well off not trading for Linebrink, since he didn't have that much of an impact, but hindsight is 20/20.
  6. I guess I don't quite see what is so special about Teixeira. Yes, he is a very good player...but frankly, it didn't seem like he was ever regarded as a superstar until a couple years ago. It looks like he's going to get a contract almost similar to A-Rod...but he's not A-Rod.
  7. I don't know. Both of those guys are getting up there in years.
  8. I don't know why the Yankees would have any interest in Gwynn, when they already have Melky. I could definitely see Gwynn being moved this off season, but I bet it will be to a team slashing payroll like the Padres (though that seems like it would make too much sense to ever happen).
  9. I actually heard that the Nationals (like JoeHova said) are the current high bidder on him. I don't know if that's true or not, but that's what they were saying yesterday afternoon on MLB Home Plate. Tex is from that area, so him going to Washington isn't is crazy as it might seem. If they do manage to land him, good for them. Short term it would probably really help them, though long term I would have to think it could have really bad implications for their ability to make other moves.
  10. If you look at the total salary paid to the current starting rotation, Suppan's salary is not a big deal (when taken in context). It shouldn't affect any potential acquisition of another starting pitcher, if they are not exorbitantly priced.
  11. Why do people get worked up about moves like this? These guys, if they work out, will probably be backup options off the bench. Nothing more...low risk, low cost moves.
  12. I didn't realize he was that close to being up.
  13. Pinch hit with who? Tony Gwynn?
  14. I was just thinking about this a bit the other day. Kendall is in a contract year, and will be 35 years old this season. Assuming he performs similarly to what he did in 2008, do you think the Brewers will re-sign him to another one or two year deal, or look elsewhere? It sounds like Salome is far from a sure thing, and could still be a ways off from being MLB ready. I don't see any other internal options that sound that exciting for the catcher's job, either. Rivera is OK, but I don't think has ever been pegged as a potential starting catcher by the Brewers. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Melvin swing a trade for a young catcher right now (maybe like a Saltalamacchia, even though the Rangers just traded Laird), who would mainly ride the bench in '09 and then take over in '10. What do you all think?
  15. Sounds good to me, Tbadder. He's only, what? 27 or 28, I believe. He was regarded at one point as one of the best young players in all of baseball...seems like it would be a potential low risk/high reward type situation.
  16. TLB, I guess I should have clarified. As long as they add at least one decent, reliable arm, I would probably be OK with the bullpen going into next season. I almost wish the Brewers would abandon trying to have a regular closer, and just "close by committee", or whatever you want to call it. Tom Haudricourt made the point last night on Homer's show on 540 that Melvin will probably be waiting for a while to make any moves, since after the big guys sign, there are probably going to be a lot of bargains out there. Many of these non-superstar types aren't going to get the money they are expecting, due to the economy and everything else. So, we probably just need to be patient...it could very well be until after Christmas or New Year's that we start to see the Brewers making moves.
  17. I really don't understand why DM needs to clear Cameron's contract to sign a $10M+ pitcher. The Brewers should be able to afford one even with Cameron on the team. Yeah, but the problem is that they need at least one starting pitcher, a closer, and maybe another bat for the lineup. Granted, those probably won't all come through free agency, but the flexiblity probably would have helped. Still, I'm kind of glad Melvin has walked away from this, I think more for the fact that the Yankees seemed to be acting pretty arrogantly throughout this whole thing. After they signed CC away from us, we don't have any reason to do them any favors.
  18. Might be able to get him on the cheap. I hope Melvin at least looks into it...doesn't seem like he'd be a worse option than a lot of others out there. The big hangup seems to be whether or not he'll be able to be an everyday player or not at this point.
  19. I wouldn't mind having him...but I heard he was looking for three or four years. Might be too risky for the Brewers at this point. He won't be cheap, either.
  20. It's not going to happen. I just think Ben really doesn't want to come back to Milwaukee, for whatever reasons. If he had interest, Melvin probably would have made him an offer by now. It's been said a million times lately, but "It takes two to tango."
  21. Yeah...what's troubling to me is that we aren't hearing the Brewers pop up in any kind of substantive reports or even rumors, even. They seem to be talking with Randy Johnson right now, but that seems to still be a long shot at best, since he probably wants to stay on the west coast. Otherwise, they seem trapped in this standoff with the Yankees over Mike Cameron. I'm sure Melvin is talking with other teams and maybe a couple other free agents, but you'd figure we'd be hearing more by now.
  22. But at least a very memorable one.
  23. sgt, that's a good idea, except for the fact that it seems certain that Sheets does not want to come back to Milwaukee.
  24. Rumor was that Durham might be retiring, so I'm not sure if he's really an option. Counsell would be OK, but I hope he doesn't get anywhere near the playing time he received last year.
