  1. Some facts about Marilyn Monroe's death were probably covered up to protect the Kennedy's (at least that's what I would guess from what I heard), but I think she still died from an overdose.
  2. That's interesting. I'd never heard all that about Morrison's death, though not being a big Doors/Morrison fan I hadn't really followed it to begin with.
  3. I think the term "small market" gets thrown around way too much. I mean, people call the Twins small market, when the Twin Cities metro area is absolutely huge. I've even heard the Cardinals called "small market", which is a joke.
  4. Poor Lew. The one game I ever attened at the Metrodome, the "Leeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwww" chants were pretty deafening.
  5. Exactly. If these aliens have really been scouting earth and doing these "probes" for decades, even centuries, shouldn't they have gathered enough evidence to decide if they're going to attack us or announce their presence and try to communicate with us on a mass sacle? Kids in the Hall did a skit making fun of that years ago.
  6. I'm sure you weren't the only one. But I think you hit the nail on the head...he was drinking when he was home, not drinking 2-3 drinks and then driving home. I think when people drink at home, especially around family, they are a lot smarter and tend to "space 'em out" over the course of a night. 1-3 drinks over the course of three or four hours isn't going to affect too many people, significantly. I think when people are out drinking in a bar or social setting, there's this mentality that they need to drink quicker, and drink more to keep up with their friends.
  7. There's no doubt in my mind that if Melvin had been let go for some reason after the '08 season, teams would have been stumbling over each other to try and get him.
  8. I remember a few years back (maybe like seven or eight years ago), a writer in SI proposed something like this. I think their idea was to have a tournament mid-season during the "lull time" of the year...like mid-May through right before the All-Star break. Basically, the games would have still counted as regular season games, but there would have been a "bracket" of 32 teams...I believe he suggested filling the final two spots with the minor league and college champion teams. The idea would be that the winners would gain a huge pot of money, or maybe even a guaranteed playoff spot. I can't remember if he suggested double elimination or single. Basically it would have been an "MLB Cup". Seemed like it could be a lot of fun, though I'm sure so many traditionalists would be turned off by the idea that it would never work. Plus the existence of the World Baseball Classic would sort of negate the novelty of it.
  9. I don't think so. Dale seems to be a "team player" and I doubt he's going to lead some sort of mutiny against the new manager, whoever that ends up being. I would guess the players would appreciate him being back in any capacity.
  10. Barring needing that money for a big free agent signing (like CC Sabathia) or trading for someone younger and better, I don't see why Cameron shouldn't be brought back next year.
  11. I think all of us would be happy with that. I guess mainly I'm just sick of seeing that lonely 1982 banner up there (again, I was only 2 years old then, so I don't even remember that team first hand). It's time for it to have some company. I think the Brewers' accomplishment this season is worth commemorating with a banner/pennant of its own. I really don't see how other teams would ridicule that...I'm sure Pirates or Nationals fans would love to hang a "Wild Card Winners" banner up in their parks (and yes, I'm familiar with the championship histories of those two franchises, but neither have won anything in a long time).
  12. Yeah, I kind of agree. Maybe if they unveil it before the first pitch of Opening Day, that would be fine...but otherwise, if they make too big a deal of it, it will be pretty silly. Edit: Oh, and as far as 1981...I think that would kind of be overkill. That was a mini-series due a strike shortened season. I think making a big deal out of that playoff appearance would go over the heads of too many people and seem kind of revisionist.
  13. It was probably time for him to move on to bigger and better things. And it's not like we're in rebuild mode anymore.
  14. They really should. Just have it say "NL Wild Card 2008", to keep it simple. But that 1982 banner has been up there by itself long enough. What the Brewers did this season was definitely worth celebrating.
  15. If Melvin won't at least interview Valentine, that's dumb. However, I think the process is going to take longer than some think. I mean, the World Series hasn't started yet, at they definitely won't be naming a new manager until after that. Still plenty of time for interviews.
  16. Body parts, no, you won't find those. A dead deer in the woods can completely decompose to be unrecognizable in a forest or swamp with days, not weeks. However, there should at least be some bone fragments. As no great ape has ever been found in the North American fossil record, the existence of a bigfoot in the Pacific Northwest remains extremely unlikely.
  17. I hope it's not as bad as last year. The constant snow made me almost lose my mind. I guess this is the time of year to remind people to get that stuff in from the yard, turn off your outside faucets, make sure your furnace is in order, etc.
  18. Yeah, that would be a no-brainer at that point. That scenario doesn't seem to be a total impossibility either.
  19. Well, I don't know that he said "all the problems have been fixed". He said they "dealt with it", which is true.
  20. If the Brewers could get him for like 3/40million, that would be great. I just think some stupid team is going to ignore his injury history and sign him to something like 4/60million, or something along those lines. At that point, the Brewers should just say "Thanks for your services, Ben," and bid him adieu.
  21. Which is smart. A young player like that is better served putting in a season starting at AAA, than riding the bench in the Majors.
  22. One other thing that hasn't been pointed out is that a lot of the teams that struggle to be competitive (Pirates, Royals, etc). have owners who are probably turning a big profit and simply pocketing a lot of that money. It's not like Bud can force the Pirates or Marlins to go out and sign big money free agents if they don't want to. Some people will hate Selig no matter what, and ridicule pretty much whatever he says, for whatever reasons. That's fine. Personally, however, I feel the changes he's made to the game, like the expanded playoffs, have brought more good than bad to the game. There's still changes that could be made, like the aforementioned salary cap (maybe a soft cap?), an international draft (which they now have a provision to implement that very item), and other things...but with baseball doing so well financially, and more fans being able to cheer on their teams to the playoffs late in the season, it's harder to legitimately complain.
  23. Well, some people are just convinced the US government is actively lying to us all the time, so they believe some sort of vast conspiracy involving hundreds, if not thousands of people, must be possible. Popular Mechanics ran an article years ago debunking all the 9/11 myths. It's still on their website, I believe.
  24. I would say baseball is fairly competitively balanced, much more than in the past. Big market teams will always have a slight advantage, but the odds of a team like the Rays, Brewers, A's, or Twins making the World Series are much better than they used to be. With baseball doing so well right now, I doubt we're going to see any more big changes, like further revenue sharing or salary caps.
  25. Interesting to hear that they are really thinking of Gamel to start at 3B next year. I'm not sure if I'm excited by that fact, but it's interesting.
