  1. Why would you be affraid of Alvarez? They won't sign him to a big money deal. If he stinks who cares, just means we get a better draft pick. If he puts it all together he'd be a huge trade chip later in the year. Maybe getting cut is the motivation he needs to have a great year.
  2. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel speculates that this could be setting things up for another move. Pedro Alvarez, who was recently non-tendered by the Pirates, has been mentioned as one possibility. Man, I would not want to be a pirate's fan to think essentially they "traded" three guys for Jason Rogers.
  3. I love the trade too. What is Roger's upside? A poor man's Sean Casey? By the time we will be competitive again he'll be on the wrong side of 30 anyway. I hope for the best for the guy because I'd much rather see the pirates win than the Cubs or Cards, but I have a feeling he'll be released by the pirates before we win more than 82 games. My buddy was driven crazy by Joe Block always mentioning early in the season that Rogers led the league in pinch hits and was a 32cnd round pick. I guess Roger's pinch hitting ability really drove his trade value up. I've read a lot of people here complain about the trades Melvin made, but I can't imagine what it's like to be a pirate fan right now. They haven't gotten out of the kiddie table round of the playoffs yet and they will be underdogs every year to the cubs. The pirates never made any splash moves during the last three years and there's a good chance their best opportunity to make a deep run in the playoffs has passed them by.
  4. But they don't have to have space available before the move do they? If they trade Lind tomorrow for 8 guys we could still DFA 3 guys before the move is announced.
  5. When God Bless America is sung, is there some kind of mention of the Wisconsin Air National Guard on either the scoreboard or PA? More generally, the military gets publicity in much the same way that they do when they put commercials on TV. AdvantageSchneider, I haven't been to a Sunday game in a long time either, but God Bless America is generally shown on TV during the Sunday broadcasts. Did I miss something? I didn't see anything saying that DOD sponsorships would stop. Without having read the actual document (PDF), I get the impression that the two Arizona senators are concerned that this might not be an effective way to spend money. Earlier this year, the senators successfully amended the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2016 to prohibit the Department of Defense from spending taxpayer dollars on these deceitful practices, and to call on professional sports organizations that have accepted taxpayer funds in exchange for military tributes to donate those profits to organizations supporting U.S. armed forces, veterans, and their families. http://www.athleticbusiness.com/industry-press-room/senators-expose-paid-patriotism-at-pro-sports-in-new-government-report.html So yeah for ending wasteful spending, boo if I still have to put up with GBA during the 7th inning stretch. Hope that goes away too.
  6. I haven't been to a Sunday game in a while. Do they still sing GBA as part of the 7th inning stretch? Will it stop now that they aren't going to be paid anymore?
  7. Which one Maddux or AA? From what I read Maddux's contract was up and he wanted to look around before renewing with Texas and I guess Texas wasn't interested in that. So I assume Mike will land somewhere fairly quickly.
  8. Buddy of mine texted me that 4 of the top 8 AL batting average leaders are ex-brewers.
  9. Carlos wasn't good for the Astros after the trade, but I assume that makes up for it. I had a weird feeling he was going to hit a HR today. He seems to have a flair for the dramatic.
  10. ^ This... Go anyone who plays the Cards from here on out as well! (Even the Cubs!) I think we are all in agreement here. Not so fast my friend. Can't root for either team. Equal hatred on both cubs and cards.
  11. And conversely Mike Trout says hi. Trout went one spot before the Brewers picked. So one spot can be a huge difference. Braun and Fielder were both top 10 picks. There are no guarantees, but if you aren't going to make the playoffs and you are in a rebuliding mode I have no idea why you wouldn't want to have as low a draft spot as possible.
  12. This goes back to the old trope of a proven closer. Personally I think there are several pitchers on the brewers that could close games. If we could get a guy that could help us long term we should trade K-rod. Hopefully they will do that in the offseason.
  13. I'm looking at fangraphs and Segura is at 0.0 War for this year. The only SS lower than him are Starlin Castro, who is losing his job, Alexi Ramirez(don't know anything about him) and the corpse of Jimmy Rollins. Although that only lists the top 24, so there are 6 guys like JJ Hardy that aren't listed. Ahead of him at 0.5 is Elvis Andrus and at 0.8 is Ian Desmond. It would seem to me that the only thing Segura has going for him is that he is cheap and he's even losing that since he will be arby eligible after this year. Maybe I'm crazy but I don't see a huge market for him. I think we'll keep him until we're sure the youngsters are absolutely ready, and maybe hope he goes on another hot streak and then trade him if we're lucky. I could easily see him being released instead of going through three years of arbitration with him. If we have a cheap replacement there would be no point in keeping him on the team as a utility guy. We can get that cheaper on the market. There are always utility guys out there that aren't that much worse than Segura and that will be much cheaper.
  14. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/29/francisco-rodriguez-was-claimed-on-waivers-but-the-brewers-pulled-him-back/ K-rod can't be traded until the offseason now. Wonder who claimed him. The Mets just traded for Addison Reed. Would be funny if they claimed K-rod, altough I kind of doubt it given their history with him. K-rod's had a great season with us, but I would have traded him for a low level prospect. His value with the team is basically zero, unless the front office thinks they can get something for him this offseason. I'm not exactly sure who would be in the market for an aging closer this offseason. No one comes to mind.
  15. It's possible we've had his medical records for a day or two and wanted our doctors to look them over. I'd imagine the MRI's and such with TJ surgery are pretty easy to read for a trained professional. MLB network about to address the situation. So we have medicals for 2 days and they don't have Drs. look at them, until the deal is leaked and then at 9PM they have the drs look at them and 2 hours later no deal. I know that's not the timeline, but just seems really weird that at 9pm you have a deal, and at 11pm you don't. Those aren't dr's hours, unless there are ER drs. It would seem to me that if I'm casually talking about trading for a guy in the middle of TJ recovery, the first thing I'm asking for is the medicals, and I'm having my drs. looking at them right away before we get anywhere near the point where a deal would be leaked. But that's just me.
  16. Did they give Wheeler a physical in the two hours between when the trade was leaked and then nullified? I'm just curious how this all goes down? Do the mets ask a player to take a physical when they think they might trade him? I'd like to know all this stuff. That would be more interesting than the trade itself.
  17. Is that why teams routinely sign dirtbags like Francisco Rodriguez and far worse individuals? K-Rod is a far worse person than Barry Bonds, it's not even close. I also think it needs to be emphasized that he (allegedly) offered to play for the league minimum. If that's true then collusion is obvious. You would have to be a Nazi war criminal for teams' fear of the "distraction" you would bring to outweigh the obvious benefit of having one of the best sluggers in the game for the league minimum. Saying he would play for the league minimum and him being happy playing for the league minimum are two different things. If anyone thinks he would have been happy playing for the league minium please contact me. I've got a great deal on the Hoan bridge for you.
  18. Even if he wins aren't the damages limited to 3 X times the minimum salary? Is that what he's really fishing after. He can't say he would have played for the minimum and then ask for more than that in damages can he? That doesn't make sense. He was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice in November of 2007. Hard to imagine someone wanted to sign a guy currently being tried for felonies. That didn't get resolved until 2011. That alone would seem to be enough to not want to sign a guy.
  19. Ron is the reason we remained 2 games from the World Series when he decided to start Marcum in game 6 despite the fact that Marcum was toast and that everyone in the world knew Marcum was toast. He should have been fired after game 6 for being that stupid. I said it then and I'll say it now - that's true, but who else should he have started? Gallardo on short rest or Naverson for 2-3 innings and the BP for the rest. Larussa won that series and I don't think he got more than 18 innings out of his starters total. A good or creative manager can find a way to win. I'm not saying we win if RR does either of those moves, but at least we would have had a chance. Marcum gave us no chance. It was obvious he had nothing left, everyone said it before the game began. Let's be honest, had RR done that in Boston or NY, he would not have been fired today, he would have been fired years ago.
  20. Ron is the reason we remained 2 games from the World Series when he decided to start Marcum in game 6 despite the fact that Marcum was toast and that everyone in the world knew Marcum was toast. He should have been fired after game 6 for being that stupid.
  21. Guy told me at 3PM today that they were firing RR and Counsel would be the new manager. I didn't think he was right b/c I thought CC wanted to be a GM, but since he called the firing I gotta think Craig is going to be the next manger of the Brewers.
  22. That was a hot take worthy of ESPN.
  23. Going in a slightly different direction, how about not trading Nilson and/or Nomo when they were free agents and the brewers as usually were going no where. I was so mad when the trade deadline passed and they were still on the roster.
  24. Maybe he'll actually get a chance to pitch in Detroit.
