  1. Wily Peralta had a 4.37 ERA his first full season in the bigs. Nelson going into tonight's game has a 4.10 ERA. I think he'll be fine.
  2. Is Marco Estrada still on the team? If he can't pitch 3 innings in Petco with a 7 run lead you might as well DFA him right now. We're not going to get out of the first round of the playoffs because the bullpen is not going to have anything left in the tank come October.
  3. Henderson underwent surgery today. Only supposed to rehab for 4 months, so should be fine for spring training next year. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140819&content_id=90432070&notebook_id=90431728&vkey=notebook_tor&c_id=tor
  4. Hopefully he's working on his change-up. From Fan Graphs. We don’t have as good an idea of baseball’s worst pitches. The truth is baseball’s worst pitches don’t get thrown often outside the bullpen. They’re projects in which pitchers don’t have confidence, so you don’t see them in games. But we can skip over to something related, something that might stand as a decent proxy: We have the data to identify baseball’s least-effective pitches. At least among pitches that are thrown more than once or twice a month. This is one of the uses of the FanGraphs pitch-value data, and if you set a 50-pitch minimum, the second-least effective pitch this year has been Wei-Chung Wang‘s changeup. And the first-least effective pitch this year? That honor belongs to Drew Smyly.
  5. Well it's official both done for the year.
  6. Masterson is going from pitching in front of the worst defense in baseball to pitching in front of arguably the best. So he doesn’t even have to improve to generate improved results, because fewer balls are going to get through or find grass with St. Louis. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-cardinals-will-be-good-for-justin-masterson/
  7. Is Price going to be dealt? Rays are only 4.5 games out of the wild card.
  8. I don't really care about Smith's value as a starter in the future. I care about his value as a reliever this year. RR used him a lot early, and that's fine, but you have to adjust later on to get him some rest. There is no reason to pitch him in a game with an 8 run lead, or pitch K-rod for that matter.
  9. Saw this on ESPN. 70% of the teams that are in first place at the all star break make the playoffs. 60% of the teams that are in first place at the all star break win their division. 20% of the teams that are in first place at the all star break make it to the world series. I need to check my media guide, but I believe historically, August is the Brewer's best month record wise.
  10. That just doesn't make any sense when he's on pace to pitch in over half the team's games. It's not like he's rusty. K-rod too is on pace for 76 appearances. If we do make the playoffs those guys aren't going to have anything left in the tank anyway. What's the point? Smith could pitch in 90 games this year if we make the playoffs.

  12. In a game where the starter was at 79 pitches through 7 innings........ Maybe he wants to give Smith an inning before the break to help him get his groove back. While also resting Peralta in a game in the bag. makes perfect sense to me. No, it doesn't make any sense. Smith isn't just our most used reliever, he's on pace to tie the team record for relief appearances in a season. He's going to break down before the season is over with if they keep pitching him, literally(am I am using that term correctly) every other day. Going into today he's on pace for 83 games. Team record is 83 games. He doesn't need more work, he needs more rest.
  13. What's going to cost us is when Will Smith's arm falls off during the playoff run. Before today's game he was on pace to tie Ken Sanders team record for appearances with 83. He might be ahead of that pace now. Don't know what the point of pitching him in an 8-1 or 9-1 ball game is. Just stupid.
  14. Would someone pin this to the top of the board for the rest of the season, so I don't have to bump it every couple of weeks?
  15. No, I don't think so. Read an interview with Theo earlier this week. They weren't going to focus on pitching until the team was ready to contend. No point in getting Price now. Good luck to the cubs. They certainly won't stink like they have recently with all the big bats they have coming up, but I don't see how they are going to put together a rotation and a bullpen that will be able to contend.
  16. We're not going to have 5 healty starters all year, so let's keep Nelson down in AAA ready to replace whoever gets hurt. Wouldn't you rather have Nelson come up when one of our guys gets hurt rather than Fiers? Estrada's performance does not warrant being taken out of the rotation.
  17. Fangraphs runs a monthly feature, wildest swings of the month. I have a feeling that swing by Segura is going to win it for June since the ball ended up ankel level and in the LH batter's box. The guys are swinging tonight like they've never seen a curve ball before.
  18. I have a buddy who says Yost being fired is right up there with his wedding day.
  19. Lyle Overbay is a veteran with 5,547 plate appearances and 3 sac bunts, the last one coming in 2011. I gotta think he has better odds of pulling a ground ball to the right side than he does getting a sac bunt down. And I agree with you generally, bunt the guy over to third late in the game, especially given our bullpen. But how many guys on the team do we have that can be trusted to get that bunt down? Segura, Scooter, Lucroy, gomez, probably Bianchi, Herrera and Schaefer. The best managers put guys in a position to succeed. Asking Davis and Overbay to bunt is not putting them in the best position.
  20. The answer is when he stops asking guys to bunt who have absolutely no chance of getting the bunt down.
  21. Davis took some pitchs today. Don't know if that had more to do with Wood being wild or if he's settling down a bit. That can only help him. Maybe he just had some jitters to work through or just needed to hit his first dinger.
  22. Are they still going to play out the season, or do we get to hang up the NL central pennant at Miller Park right now? What's the over/under in days on this thread being bumped to remind someon of their foolish talk? I love this team as much as the next guy, but I don't see us leading dang near wire to wire.
