  1. For me, what's hard to read is DM's actual (vs. stated) satisfaction with the rotation as it stands. It's unclear to me whether: a.) he realizes that it's a potentially disastrous problem, genuinely wants to fix it by adding a bona fide arm, and is publicly mouthing bland GM-speak as he tries to work out a deal for someone serviceable; or b.) he's basically content with the rotation and won't make a deal unless it falls into his lap. I hope that it's "a," and there is still time to sign a FA or make a trade. But the talent pool is shrinking as time passes. It's not like the options are getting better as we get closer to spring training. Guys will get signed by other teams (many of which are every bit as hungry for pitching as the Brewers, if not more so).
  2. Costas is just OK for me. I don't think he's as funny as he thinks he is, and I just cringe when he tries to get cute. I find him much more palatable when he's being straightforward. All the same, a great thing for the network, to bring him in.
  3. It's interesting that Wright was the 95th overall pick in the '01 draft, and Dave Bush was 109th. That gives you some idea how long Wright has been toiling in the minors.
  4. Sure, something will work out, eventually, but is the team going to get a good result simply waiting around and for a quality SP to fall into its lap a month before the season starts?
  5. I think I saw something last week in the Daily Page (Isthmus online version) about the Middleton store. I don't live too far away, so I might give it a whirl with my kids this weekend.
  6. Got my "D" names mixed up there.
  7. I didn't think it was a Jack Black thing as much as it was a conceptual problem. I kept waiting for Andy to get nabbed for a pirated film or whatever. But, no, it was just him watching an awkwardly bad movie. (I literally cringed during the bathtub scene. I didn't need to see that.) "What I Hate About You" was pretty good. Not as good as Dwight knowing how to play Supertramp on his keyboard, but still funny.
  8. Precisely. And DM has to know this. (At least I hope so.) Niemann wouldn't be bad, either, as the de facto #6 guy.
  9. I see your point, but Capuano has torn the same elbow ligament twice, and he underwent Tommy John last year. Lowry's injury (whatever the heck it is) was bad, but I'd roll the dice on him before I would on Cappy.
  10. Did anyone see the documentary Gonzo? There was all this hype b/c it was Alex Gibney, but I thought it was really pretty dreadful. Lots of star power (Jimmy Carter talking about Thompson! Johnny Depp reading his work!) but it seemed jumbled to me.
  11. But if you were naming your kid after a British glam rock band, Slade would be ok.
  12. The injury was "exertion compartmental syndrome in his forearm. In layman's terms, the southpaw [was] suffering from pain in his throwing wrist from a compressed nerve." How weird of an injury is that? "The Giants have not been able to find another pitcher who has had the same surgery, and their prognosis is more of a guess. . . Whenever a pitcher throws, blood flows to the arm, expanding the muscles. Those muscles are surrounded by a capsule called a fascia, akin to a sausage casing. In a case such as Lowry's, the capsule is too tight. When the muscles expand, they have nowhere to go and place pressure on a nerve, resulting in weakness, cramping and loss of feeling." So the good news is that it's apparently not an elbow or shoulder. (I agree about the peripherals, though. They would make me think twice.)
  13. His name came up in another thread, and I thought he might be worth discussing separately. As I wrote there: Lowry is intriguing, if his arm is OK. I read that Bochy hasn't yet settled on a #5 starter, so they could be looking to move him. Per MLB.com: "People throughout baseball are beginning to believe that the Giants will, or should, hold onto Sanchez and trade Noah Lowry instead if the latter proves during Cactus League exhibitions that he has overcome the forearm trouble that sidelined him last year." This could be an interesting possibility (although his '07 numbers were a little wacky -- good ERA, horrible WHIP and K/BB).

  15. Yeah I'll take another Bobby Grich anyday. Great hitter. I agree with Melvin that trading Rickie is a risky proposition at this point. That's the kind of trade that could ruion a GM's career. I expect Rickie to break out this year and having Randolph aboard should help his glove work.Bobby Grich with the bat, maybe. With the glove? Never. (Four-time Gold Glover.) So reports the guy who grew up watch the Orioles in the 1970's.....
  16. Yeah, that's what I'm getting at. And I'll freely admit that, on my part, it's basically irrational. I'm going to be worried about what he's allegedly thinking during the broadcast, and that's pretty silly. (I mean, what is Uecker thinking about, or not thinking about? God only knows.) I will say that this is uniquely Cubs-related. If he was a self-proclaimed diehard Marlins fan (OK, bad example, but you get my drift), I wouldn't think twice about it. But the Cubs -- that's a blood rival. If he knows the game and has a good call, this quickly will become water under the bridge. If he sucks, however....
  17. "Lance Broadway" almost sounds like a porn star. (And, looking at his WHIP in the minors and majors, he sort of pitches like one.)
  18. Holy multiple generation gap, Batman. This guy is 44 years younger than Uecker. (He's even 14 years younger than Powell.) It might work, in terms of appealing to younger listeners, or might be a little weird. I am willing to give this guy a chance, but he needs to make some public repudiation of all things Cub, ASAP.
  19. Here's some stuff from the D'backs on Munn: Jeff Munn returns for a third season as pre and post-game host on the Diamondbacks' Radio Network, while continuing in his role as the club's secondary radio play-by-play announcer. Munn is in his eighth year as a Diamondbacks broadcaster, having joined the radio team in 2001. In addition to his work with the Diamondbacks, Munn is also the radio play-by-play voice for Arizona State University Women's Basketball. Munn has also been heard as a fill-in play-by-play announcer on ASU Men's Basketball and Baseball broadcasts. He also served as a play by play announcer for MLB Radio's coverage of the Arizona Fall League in 2006. Munn also serves as the stadium announcer for the Fiesta and Insight Bowls, and also served in the same role for the inaugural BCS National Championship game. Munn attended Arizona State University, majoring in history. He resides in Tempe with his wife of 16 years, Laurie, and their two children, Patrick (12) and Hayley (9).
  20. I don't want to prejudge Provus, but the Cub connection does bother me a little. It's not like he would just be coming over from the Cubs; that, I could live with. (Sort of a payback for Pat Hughes.) It's that he's apparently a serious and lifelong Cubs fan. Deep down inside, who's he going to be rooting for during all of those head-to-head games? I dunno. He's a pro, and maybe it wouldn't impact his call.
  21. Could our new announcer be a 30-year old "diehard Cubs fan"? JS reporting that this dude is one of two finalists for the spot. From the WGN web site below. Cory Provus is the new WGN Radio pregame host. A native of Highland Park, Ill., Provus joined WGN Radio after working with International Sports Properties in Alabama as director of broadcast operations and "Voice of the UAB Blazers." He handled radio play-by-play for UAB football, men's basketball and baseball, and hosted a weekly coaches show on radio/TV. Provus was named 2006 Radio Sportscaster of the Year by the Alabama Broadcasters Association. A graduate of Syracuse University, he will handle the Cubs pregame show plus be the play-by-play announcer for one inning of each game. This is from the Roanoke, VA, paper last summer: On Monday, Provus turned 30 years old. On Tuesday, he headed to Wrigley Field and helped describe another Chicago Cubs victory on WGN radio. He anchored the pregame show and the postgame show. And in the fifth inning, he sat alongside Cubs legend Ron Santo and handled the play-by-play. This is his job now. If you want to call it that. "I'm so lucky, man," Provus said by phone last week, a little less than two years after landing his dream job. "This is my hometown, my favorite team. I'm a diehard Cub fan, and the fact that I get to travel the country with the team and fly with the team and be on the bus -- it's fantasy camp and I get paid for it."
  22. Did anybody catch him on Colbert the other night? It was hilarious.
  23. I wouldn't say "awful" -- maybe just "shaky" -- but I agree with pretty much everything else. Maybe we should have a contest: Predict the Brewers' rotation on June 1, August 1, and September 1. (Anybody who winds up getting that last one right is waaaaaaaaay smarter than me.)
  24. I also don't buy into the multiyear deal = injury argument. I mean, if you knew you were completely healthy, wouldn't you want a nice, fat multiyear deal, too?
  25. Is your blog hosted by a major blog hosting service (blogger, wordpress)? There may be some sort of administrative support contact where they could check activity on your account. That's about what I figured. Presumably they will at least be able to show the activity in detail. (And who knows -- that might show that I somehow did it myself.)
