  1. Is Mike Jones still Brewers property, or did he leave via minor league free agency? If it's the former, that's extremely tacky.
  2. Is any kind of defense worth a career .263/.328/.304 line? When Seth McClung out-slugs your starting CFer, it just seems like bad news.
  3. I really hope that Doug Melvin wouldn't gamble that the one season where Gathright put up a .371 OBP in just 74 games and hope it happened again. And what's the basis on saying "Melvin is known to believe that speed guys develop later as hitters" other than lucking out on Podsednik for a career year?
  4. Just wanted to say, that was some great writing.
  5. Dunno, Marcel's projecting him to put up a 5.15 ERA... You could maybe take a half-run away from that with a shift to the NL at best... He's not a bad guy to take a flyer on, but only if the Yankees insisted on taking a "bad contract" back.
  6. It's interesting, but does it really have any bearing on talent and projectability? It seems like pretty much every review of this signing has it looking like one of the worst of the offseason.
  7. "Leaving the Bellagio Hotel on Thursday afternoon, one Cubs official said Bradley was the team's next focus, and one of Bradley's representatives said Friday morning that the Cubs were at the top of Bradley's list."-Chicago Sun Times I think this rumor's pretty substantiated... which is unfortunate, because I think it clearly makes the Cubs much better. Maybe uncle Bud will let us go back to the AL Central.
  8. To me, Gathright is just Tony Gwynn Jr minus a HOF dad.
  9. It is something we're working on for the next version of Brewerfan... which is unfortunately stalled, as the last few months have been hell for me as far as time goes. It's definitely in the forefront of my mind, tho... the current setup sucks for my smart phone, and it drives me nuts.
  10. This is where I disagree... If I'm given the opportunity to set up my entire extended family for life instead of just a subset of them, that's pretty important to me. I'm sure athletes don't spend all this money in a vacuum, donating big chunks to charity and investing back in the community.
  11. The Brewers have as many question marks as any team with their starting rotation, so I think the familiarity plus the opportunity makes it extremely likely they offer Chris a split contract, where he makes X amount of money in the minors and X amount of money if he gets added to the 25-man.
  12. Doing a little research into Villanueva as a closer, here are some career numbers to look at: Pitches 1-15: 86.2 IP, 72 H, 25 BB, 93 K, 3.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP I guess I'm a bit shocked that in that sampling he has more than 1 K an inning. The ERA's mediocre for a closer candidate, but the WHIP's not too shabby. His stats in pitches 16-30 are about the same. The more I think about it, perhaps Villanueva would be a better closing option than Hoffman, and while the Brewers still need good bullpen arms, perhaps Fuentes isn't worth it.
  13. The thing with Cabrera, is that he has terrific stuff, but has been unable to consistently harness it. I agree that signing him would be a huge risk, but his upside is just so tempting... Pittsburgh or KC would be dumb not to throw a little bit of money at him and try and parlay him into a deal later on.
  14. Shortstops make the best utility guys, because of their athleticism. With the team having to spend more money on their starters these days, my assumption is that they're trying to catch lightning in a bottle and find a quality bench guy.
  15. Yeah, that's weird. I think maybe he might've meant gap power, but even his extra base hit numbers aren't what I'd expect to see with his speed.
  16. Well, I've lived in the metro-milwaukee area all my life, except for college, so proximity was my primary reason. More specifically though, my parents got my signed up for the Brewers Pepsi Fan club, where you'd get like 6 tickets, a subscription to What's Brewin' magazine and a gift... I liked to read as a kid, so the magazine got me interested, and 6 games a year (plus whatever other scattered ones I ended up going to because someone had tickets) reeled me in, probably starting in 1985 or so. I've been hooked ever since, of course.
  17. Wow on Wigginton... It just seems bizarre to me that Ed Wade wasn't able to trade him for something of value before they had to non-tender him. He absolutely mangles lefties... He's kind of at a weird price point for a platoon player, but he'd be a stellar one.
  18. I'm not sure how the Brewers would score runs with those bases so clogged up.
  19. Defensive metrics is actually an area where I'll trust my eyes over the numbers (although I do think defensive metrics do deserve quite a bit of merit). And in my opinion, from what I've seen, I'd take Cabrera defensively in CF any day over Gabe. I do think Gabe's defense is better than he gets credit for, but he's far from a natural CFer.
  20. I don't want Chris Magruder back.
  21. At least he was able to stop the clock.
  22. If we're talking about who you'd rather have as a starting CFer, I'd actually take Melky because of the enormous difference in defense. If we're talking reserve, it's Gabe for me.
  23. I'm always down for my man Gabe Gross to come back, if there are no other lefty reserve OFers on the roster, but I think the rest are pretty much duds. The crop of non-tenders in previous years has looked a lot better than this year's.
  24. I guess I disagree with that. Geno's always been one of my favorite posters. He's generally negative, and usually emotional. He channels it into something that's always interesting to read, and I think a lot of what has to do with it is that he picks his spots, instead of taking a shotgun approach to things. I will agree that USUALLY post quality is inversely proportional to emotion, but I think there's definitely the opportunity to combat that.
