    Villanueva can be called back up before Sept 1st. Gwynn probably will be left off the postseason roster, however, there's a slight chance he could make the cut because having a superior defensive outfielder and pinch runner may have more value than an extra arm, because of all the off days.

    Trading Laird for Vargas would be the opposite direction that the Rangers are moving in.

    Reed, until you're able to point to a player who cleared a team better than the Brewers, record-wise, picked up and would be better than a player on our roster, there's really no argument... is there?

    Beware, regarding Gross's production. He plays vs. RHP only, for the most part, which plays to his strengths. He's really not an everyday player on this team.

    Billy's got an .898 OPS over the past 8 days. I'm not saying he's got it all figured out now, but it's an encouraging sign.

    Sheets is scheduled to throw a simulated game today. He could either be activated by this weekend or go for a rehab start. Personally, I hope he's activated straight away.

    Anyone know what the average IP for starter in the NL is?... It would make an interesting comparison to see if we really are alone in this respect.

    Soup's got a 4.24 ERA this month. He's not really the problem.

    You need to have someone as your mopup guy and spot starter. I think he fills that role perfectly, given he's going to be cut off at 150 IP. I don't think putting him on the shelf in favor of, say, a Greg Aquino is going to buy them any advantage.

    If Yost doesn't send Capuano to the pen, or Melvin doesn't option him to AAA, Yost has officially lost any authority he has left, in my book. I'm assuming (hoping) this was discussed with Doug before he came out and said something. McClung is getting stretched out in AAA. If we don't see him start by Wednesday, it might be a big tip-off. I also wouldn't be shocked to see Villanueva in the rotation. 4 days off between appearances may actually give him his stamina back.
