The BF article on the differences between Frelick's contact this year to last this week was really good, and focused on what's actually probably repeatable from 2025, assuming the home run totals were an outlier that are unlikely to recur. Linked below for anyone reading this discussion thread who might have missed the article.

Depends if he returns to being the player he was last year. No he's not a power hitter but he was pretty valuable in 2025. (3.6 WAR; 114 wRC+ at Fangraphs). I'm not saying the people calling for him to be platooned and/or to call up Lara are wrong, but I do think that sticking with Frelick thus far and expecting positive regression at some point has been a reasonable choice from the Brewers. I continue to think we're going to see call ups, including Lara, in the next 30 days.

That's a distinction without a difference. Certainly agree that the current group of owners is far more interested in increasing the value of their franchises than they are year to year revenue/profit. Historically that hasn't been the case but it is now and has been for much (though not all) of Attanasio's ownership.

the difference between the MLBPA's competitive tax at $150 million and a hard floor of $171 million from MLBs offer is interesting to me..... the other point you made about the owners historic refusal to open the books complicating any likelihood of MLBPA entertaining a cap/floor: completely agree But after decades of collusion and lying by the owners I'm not sure even opening the books would help. I think the words "cap" and "floor" are probably non-starters even if the tax system proposed by MLBPA are basically soft cap/floor structures

That's fine. Never said they should move him to corner OF because of organizational need though. Primarily I just think it's becoming clear that staying healthy is going to be a challenge for him behind the plate. As for his physical tools to catch, he's got the arm that's for sure.

There are certainly signs of that. He snaps his glove down at times instead of framing when the pitch isn't where he wants it and it's easy to tell when he's frustrated behind the plate. There was a game I attended in April where he caught some negative responses from the home crowd on one of those moments where his awareness lapsed that I mentioned above and he didn't engage, although his body language afterwards revealed his frustration with himself. So I likely wouldn't put it at a PCA level but I agree it needs work.

I get that they need depth at the catcher position organizationally and that there isn't an obvious positional alternative other than corner OF where there's less of a need. I just think there are plenty of signs that he's not going to hold up at catcher even if his development at the position continues, and that at some point the desire to have the bat play results in a move. The awareness lapses I mentioned above are certainly a product of the fact that he was mostly a DH/OF in college. We'll see obviously. Just a thought I keep having when I watch him play I'm certainly not calling on them to decide he's a DH only at High A. I do think that if a move happens the sooner he starts playing a corner OF spot professionally the better. Obviously they don't see that as inevitable and he's got more value if his bat plays at the higher levels and he develops into an MLB level catcher which obviously is what they're hoping for.

The Brewers ongoing commitment to keep Dinges at catcher has always surprised me a little. He certainly has the arm for it. I'm no scout but I've watched him behind the plate several times since he's hit High A and while his situational awareness has improved there are noticeable lapses at times. He also seems to take a lot of physical punishment at the position. That's not unusual for a catcher obviously but I've thought for a while that he might be destined for a DH/corner OF spot. Obviously since he's in High A there's still plenty of time for that to happen. Every player wants to win but they aren't all as demonstrative as Dinges is. Fun player to watch. While he's still developing as a catcher and I'm not saying he can't play the position at the upper levels, I'd be inclined to move him off the position to save some wear and tear on his body and keep that bat in the lineup day to day.

So this topic is played out, but I just saw Marmol's interview where he basically admitted pointing in the way Uribe described, although he says his intent was "Be smart. Don't do it" and "You're going to get someone hurt". The video clip of the gesture too. I don't think it was remotely unreasonable or even mistaken for Uribe to interpret those gestures the way he did. Still think what he did was stupid, but I said upthread that I thought he might have misinterpreted what Marmol did. I don't think that's true. Marmol can say he never had any intent to actually have his guys throw at anyone and that might even be true, but pointing at parts of your body and saying you were trying to tell them "you're going to get someone hurt" only makes sense if your intent is to relay the possibilty that someone was going to get thrown at.

Meh. I mean, it was stupid and rude, but I've seen worse. A lot of ink has been spilt over it already. Assuming there's no blow ups today I think the whole thing has been handled pretty well. If MLB fines him or even suspends him for a game or two I don't really have a problem with that either. He took the remonstration from Murphy, apologized to his teammates and talked to the press last night, which is better than sulking or hiding. I sort of wish he'd been a little more magnanimous to the Cardinals in that interview, but I didn't really get the impression that he was just making stuff up, even if he was mistaken in his read of what he saw two days ago. I'm not mad at him either to be honest. If people are upset with him I get it. If they're not, I get that too. . I do hope he learns from it so it doesn't repeat let alone get worse again moving forward.
