  1. I read it in the same manner that homer did: the college guys on the board might have been closer to being MLB contributors, but their max contribution might be in the 'pen. Now, here's hoping for an "over slot" pick in the second or third!
  2. Rogers averaged a little over 2 2/3 innings per appearance last year--and, if memory serves, he started out working 1+ innings per "start" at the beginning of the year and building slowly on that. He ended up throwing 64 2/3 over the year and built up to throwing probably 85 pitches towards the end. [i don't think those stats include the AFL...] So, starting the year throwing 85 pitches is a step up for Rogers and he'll likely approach 100-120 innings, which is quite a tick up from last year.
  3. BA's Jim Callis has an updated mock, not behind the paywall. Vitek, McGuire, Allie, Wojciechowski, Colon, Brentz and Grandal, among others, still on the board at 14 in that one.
  4. Thanks for the info, both Minigoon and colby. It looks like Karsten Whitson is falling a bit: haven't seen his name mentioned in conjunction with the Brewers, but he's one of the prep pitchers I'd love to get. Cole, too. Agreed with X and DHonks, though--I'd love to get Allie.
  5. No crystal ball, but Seid was on WSSP this morning [mp3 link]. Nothing revelatory, but some interesting comments on BPA and going pitching IF it's close between a bat and an arm at the same slot. Sounds like they're confident the guy they want will be there, if I heard correctly.
  6. Well, the Brewers already drafted Marcus Knecht... in the 23rd round of 2008. Another Ontarian. Good find, colby, since I just read right past that into the mock. I wonder if Melvin was doing any scouting while in Florida this week. And, any news on a pre-draft workout at MP this weekend?
  7. Not sure if this belongs here, as he's on the 40-man and doing a rehab assignment, but, per @NashvilleSounds, Mat Gamel back to AAA tonight. edit: typo
  8. I don't think the possibility of PEDs in HS should be ignored, but one major difference between HS and college programs is the material conditions. While baseball isn't a huge revenue sport on most college campuses, it is on some--and more importantly the college baseball programs are intertwined with athletic departments that take in huge revenues and have a plethora of resources. In those circumstances with high financial reward (both for the institution and the individual athlete), I'd have to believe the opportunity for and availability of PEDs is increased.
  9. That had slipped my memory. Dave Bush, Tim Dillard, Justin Lehr... quite a collection of catchers-converted-to-back-end-starters we've had over the years. JB: Regarding Heether, I've been thinking he's candidate three to be DFA'd off the 40-man, after Suppan and Varga. Which might make him #1 if the FO doesn't see the other two as good options to dump. Outside of his Beloit numbers and last year, Heether seems like a run-of-the-mill utility guy that can be had on waivers throughout the year. If he could play short moderately well, I'd probably think differently--but I don't think he can. To each their own (just like Farris)! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. Total speculation, but, like jackalope wrote above, I'm guessing he gets bumped to Milwaukee since his out clause is tomorrow. Pulling at 59 pitches means he's still available to throw Sunday out of the pen in a pinch. They'll probably send Estrada to Nashville after the game tomorrow. Coach wrote that Salome is back in Huntsville tomorrow, so maybe there's hope for a DFA (Suppan, Vargas), which might make Salome's return easier to plug. (I'm not sure what Huntsville's roster situation is, numbers-wise.) Something like Cappy to MIL, Gamel/Cain/Kintzler to NSH, Salome to HUN. Edit: Thanks for the info on the first delay. I noticed there was another for Micah Hoffpauir getting tossed, too. What's odd is that Dillard pinch hit for Cappy. That's an argument for moving a bat to NSH.
  11. I'm fairly confident that Seid will go BPA, but of course the question then becomes *how* the rate BPA, right? ;-) My personal preference, which is admittedly amateurish and ill-informed, would be to avoid pitchers with big projectable FBs and a plus second pitch who have substantial concern about command and repeating mechanics. I know all of the available players will have some concerns at #14 (or even at #2), but I'm too scared off by recent 1st round pitchers (Rogers, Jeffress, Arnett--and disasters like Fredrickson in 1S) who fit my above, inexact category. That said, I'd be excited about any of the following: Pitchers: Whitson, Allie*, Wimmers. I would love it if someone like Sale fell, but I don't see it happening. In my dreamworld, Taillon somehow falls due to bonus demands... Bats: Choice, Sale, or Castellanos. Maybe Colon, but that seems to be more of a LaPorta-type pick for immediate return, and I doubt that the FO thinks we need immediate return at SS or 2B with Escobar, Weeks/Lawrie likely to plug those spots for awhile. *yeah, I know... he seems to be exactly what I'm cautious of above, but he just fits the Brewer mold: Midwest HS, athletic, big FB, high upside, and Piliere at Fanhouse says we have interest, though I don't really trust him. Regardless of what happens, let's hope the Brewers continue their record of relatively quick signings so whomever they take gets some action this season. Moreover, I hope they spend in the late rounds like last year--catch some of those players that fall due to perceived strong commits!
  12. What if the Giants figure out a way to throw in Drew Henson? I'd be ok with taking a chance at a price, like 4/23, that you could eat after 2-3 years if it didn't work out. The only problem with that, though, is how motivated are the Giants to move Zito if they're going to have to kick in that much cash? Obviously, they'll likely want to work Bumgarner into their rotation in the next year or two, barring any major set back. But is that enough motivation for them to kick in that much cash?
  13. Jonathan Mayo reporting via Twitter that the Brewers signed 16th round pick Scooter Gennett. No figure reported. BA just mentioned on FSN that Gennett (which he pronounced "Jennett") signed, without citing a source. It sounded like a factual tone, to me.
  14. Sounds as if Gennett talks are ongoing with a wait-and-see timetable for us interested fans, per Twitter reply from @AdamMcCalvy - who I'd like to thank for being all over these August signings. His http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com should be at the top of everyone's non-BF reading list. Update: Jonathan Mayo says Brewers signed Gennett, via twitter! I've never been more excited over a late-round player I know nothing about! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. McCalvy just tweeted that Seid and Davis were on the field pregame and that the two sides are dotting and crossing the document. Adam expects it'll be formal in time for a mid-game announcement. Ok, Hall sounds pretty much finished. I'd love an announcement on Gennett today, too. Sorry about the lack of a link, but it's tedious on an iPhone.
  16. Yup, my bad. I was clearly confusing the two. Solid reasoning MNBrew, but the less than 20-day option to the minors is at least one situation where days on the 25 man are not created equal, yes?
  17. nate: September call-ups only count as 1 day of service time, regardless of how many days the player is up for during the month. I don't think the org will sweat that. I agree on the above five and Axford is a really good dark horse. It'd be nice to see what they have in Jones, too, though I admit I don't remember his 40-man status. It's unfortunate that Butler is on the shelf, as I'd have liked to see him--like now, instead of Burns...
  18. Wishful thinking manifestation? On his blog, http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com , McCalvy is reporting that the Brewers are confidently nearing deals with Davis, Hall - and Gennett! Considering the above report on Hall and that the team just made official annuncements on D'Vo (2010 contract) and Howell, I'd consider this really positive, at the org seems to downplay or be very guarded and cautious about premature optimism. I would be very excited to add these three. I would assume Davis would immediately by a BA org top 10 for us and Hall and Gennett would be top 30. Gennett's report has him as a top polished HS bat in this class. Has anyone seen him at a showcase (hint, hint, colby...)?
  19. Offering a one-year extension is an intelligent move by AZ. If he takes it, you have him next year; if he doesn't, that means he's probably not going to accept an offer for arbitration, which lets AZ know they'll get a comp pick. That knowledge could be/could have been used to get a better offer out of the Brewers. Though, it seems like a trade didn't get done, as it's now 37 minutes past the deadline. Can AZ put Davis back on revocable waivers after having revoked him?
  20. And everyone who declares this Melvin's dumbest move, how does an extra pre-FA year on Hardy not increase his trade value, regardless of is he's hitting terribly up in MLB or well in AAA? This, coupled with not affecting Escobar's arby/service time status, makes this move incredibly shrewd. As others' have expressed, hopefully Macha plats Esky everyday, rather than a Counsell/Lopez/Hall platoon...
  21. Yeah, the horizontal top menu was what I was referencing as the "top menu." Feel free to kill this, obviously.
  22. Yeah, I know it's *way* too early for this, but, in another thread, second round busts were being mentioned. I think it was LouisEly who posted "Josh Murray says 'hi'" - and my immediate reaction was "Max Walla says 'hi.'" Again, I know it's way too early for that talk and I'm sure Walla will come around. I'm just surprised at the initial struggle from someone who's supposed to have a short, compact stroke. You think he'd be able to put the bat on the ball a bit more consistently. Hopefully, it's just an 18 year old adjusting to the nerves of playing professionally - trying to do too much, etc. He sure had a gung-ho attitude on draft day.
  23. Plus, lists generate user content. Just ask LiveSocial.
  24. Just thought I'd point out that the "Forum" bar on the RHS of the front page is linking to the old ezboard forum address and gives the following MySQl query error when clicked. Good thing the text link in the top menu references the yuku forum or I may have had to let Safari autocomplete the URL http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
