  1. Ok, you do understand that was sarcasm..right? Geez, some of you guys are so serious. He's not writing about war, or global warming, or street violence in the inner city. He's writing about baseball. It's not supposed to read like something out of a medical journal. I found it humorous and right on the mark. Macha is boring, non-inspiring, and completely emotionless and for most of the season it seems as if the team has taken on that exact same persona.
  2. To me, the first 6 paragraphs in Michael Hunt's column this morning about the Brewers is the best writing I have seen in the sports section in a long time. I'm so glad that someone in the media is finally expressing some concern over Macha's overly laid back style:
  3. Sounds like a great concept. I have a question or two though. Are the titles of the stories the same as the name of the song (it does not appear that way). If not, is there a way to find out what song is being referenced by each story...or are there copyright issues that you need to be concerned about (therefore - no direct reference to the song)? edit: I now see in the first couple pages of the sampler, that there is a reference to some of songs (not all?). I guess I'm too old to be familiar with some of those titles or maybe I just don't listen to enough "non-mainstream" music.
  4. I disagree.
  5. Davego took my question. I guess my other question would have been - Would Moises Alou have caught that foul ball if Bartman did not interfere, and if so, would they have won game 6? edit: Now that I think of it I have so many questions regarding PEDs. It would be hard to pick two. How many HRs were hit because of PEDs? How many players were using during the hight of PED use? How many, if any, current players are still attempting to use PEDs? How many players in other sports have been using PEDs and how has it effected those sports? edit 2: Ok, I know the original post ask for one or two...but I just keep thinking of more, including was Shoeless Joe really part of the conspiracy in the Black Sox scandle?
  6. Man, I wish those speed limits where in place back in 1989-1991. That's was the period I lost a lot of my points and was down to 2. I had a job as a regional auditor and my territory covered Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, & Iowa. IIRC, Back then the speed limit was 55 - everywhere!!
  7. I have never heard about any stipulation that a course must have previous experience hosting a major championship. Erin Hills is hosting the Amateur Championship in 2011. Hosting that event is many times a precursor to eventually hosting the U.S. Open. I played Erin Hills two or three years ago. It's a very nice course...obviously.
  8. "Gross speed"? That's not that bad. If you do any driving during rush hour (and traffic is not too backed up), the left lane often moves at speeds of 20 mph over the speed limit between Milwaukee and Waukesha. Although, I guess on a 2 lane highway, 20 mph over would probably not be very common.
  9. You are somewhat lucky that your insurance never went up. I was down to about 2 points at one time also (this was about 20 years ago). I guess the big difference is that all my tickets came within about a 3 or 4 year period. I actually got taken off of American Family and got put onto something called American Standard. I think I was paying something like $600 per quarter (back around 1990). There was a period of about 3 years where I always went exactly the speed limit because I was so scared to lose my final points (had a lot of drivers angry at me...even in the slow lane) I doubt that this one ticket will do a whole lot to your insurance if anything at all, but like others, I recommend going to the court date just to save some money on the fine and possibly some points.
  10. I understand that you put that your memory is bad on some of these, but this is simply not true. And I'm not singling you out, per say, as I see this all over various online forums. Manning (& Rick Waits) were traded to Milwaukee for Gorman in 1983, not 1987 during Molitor's streak. I do apologize if you were emphasizing the "just traded" part in meaning "we ONLY go Rick Manning for our beloved Gorman Thomas! What a rip-off! Gorman is worth WAY more than that!" Ok, after reading this, I had to check for myself. Wow...I forgot that Manning had played for Milwaukee during 5 seasons. I knew that Gorman was traded shortly after 1982, but I also knew that he came back and played with the Brewers again..and I was thinking that he was traded again (this time for Manning). Obviously, I was wrong. Thanks for the correction! The one thing about that day that I definitely know is true is that it rained almost all day before the game. I know this because I was bringing a date to the game (a date I was really really looking forward to) and I was worried that things were going to get called off. I spent the entire day watching the local "radar" channel (not nearly what is available today) on cable.
  11. My memory is terrible and some of the things on this list I remembered while reading this thread (I wish I had kept the stub for many of these): -3 World Series games that the Brewer's were involved in (actually did keep the stub for these - leftcenter beaches). -3 ALCS games in Milwaukee where the Brewers came back from a 2-0 deficit (first time in baseball playoff history), including the AL pennant clinching game. -Tie All Star Game -Yount 3,000th hit -Game where Molitor's 39 game hitting streak ended. And for those who don't remember - Rick Manning, who was just traded to Milwaukee for the beloved Gorman Thomas has the game winning hit to end any chance of Molitor coming to bat again for another shot at extending his streak. Manning was booed for winning the game for Milwaukee. -Fielder/Weeks 1st HR game -5 HR in one inning game - Ricky Henderson's single season stolen base record game (if I remember correctly it was also Mt. Dew bat night - that's pretty rare too!) - The game that ended Mark Guidry's 13-0 record. I think Moose Haas beat him. - Brand't Brown last out dropped ball game - I think Sosa hit HRs 65 and 66 in that game as well (I could be wrong about the HR #'s) I wasn't at this game but I think a walk off Balk wins. How often has that occured? Also, is the Edmonds Diego game the game where some one answered Jim Edmonds to a question on the score board where one of the hints was "His middle name is Diego"? I was at that game and remember it, but I had no idea that it had become famous on this board - I missed that.
  12. This from CBS Sportsline, via MLB.com: Brewers OF Ryan J. Braun entered Thursday's game against the Cubs riding a month-long slump at the plate. He came into the game hitting just .234 (25 for 107) over his last 26 games. He didn't help his cause by going 0 for 4 on Thursday. Although, he did have an RBI and walk, but he left four runners on base. Some speculate that Braun might be harboring an injury since his slide began about the time he was plunked on the left elbow May 10 by Braves SP Tommy Hanson. But Braun insisted to MLB.com on Thursday that his elbow was "not a problem at all." (Updated 06/10/2010).
  13. On the web site they are talking about the air show festival grounds, which I believe is located at Veterans Park. Since you can view the airshow from just about anywhere by the lakefront in Milwaukee, you could bring a cooler or whatever and just view it from someplace other than the festival grounds.
  14. I don't follow the minor league extremely close, but I try to keep up somewhat for the benefit of my fantasy team. One thing I always try to look at is the prospect hot sheet on BA. One thing that has really stuck out to me this year is all the pitching talent that Atlanta seems to have at the A and AA level. Delgado, Hoover, Teheran, Vizciano, Minor and others. Are we headed for another Avery, Smoltz, Maddux, Glavine type era for the Braves in the near future? I'd love to see the Brewers get one of these young arms (especially Teheran) in a trade.
  15. I remember that commercial Homer and I did a search, but came up with nothing. But here are a few great retro sites if you are older and nostalgic like me. The second one is Milwaukee specific - towards the bottom there are a bunch of links to old radio sound bites and other pages of nostalgia. http://www.retrojunk.com/ http://www.retrocom.com/retromilw/milwretro.htm
  16. This is my thinking on it. I equate it to the Dad who is umping a little league game that his son is playing in and is trying to be so fair that he is overly fair. As the play was being made I think Jim Joyce thought to himself "I'm going to call this like I would call any other play and if I think he's safe, I'm calling it that way..no matter how close it is." I think he got caught up in his mind with trying to be "overly fair". I really believe that if this play had happened earlier in the game (before the 5th inning), he possibly would have made the right call. Also...How about the play for the first out in the ninth? There was no way I thought that ball was going to be caught.
  17. I'm always happy when the voting ends, because I get annoyed by the fans who pull out their game ticket when they announce the "All-Star drawing winner". Then they sit and study the ticket looking for the number that corresponds with the number on the scoreboard. Hello people? Listen to the announcement. It has nothing to do with your game ticket.
  18. As someone who is often on a bike, my main annoyance is people who use the bike lane as their "go around" lane, often without looking. I'm generally aware if I passed a bike within the last couple of seconds and even so I always check my side and rear mirrors. So, unless the bike is traveling faster than my car (never the case in the situation I'm talking about) it's really not a very risky move to just go around a car making a left hand turn. I guess part of my annoyance is the lack of planning or foresight. You see the guy in front of you has just put on his left side blinker. There is a line of traffic coming on the other side of the road and so the driver making the left turn is going to have to wait awhile. How hard is it to think a step or two ahead, check your mirrors and make the move? This is really not that dangerous of a move at all if done correctly. The main road I drive on where this is a frequent occurrence is Grandview Blvd in Waukesha (between Northview and St. Paul). There is plenty of room on this road to maneuver around drivers making left turns.
  19. I get annoyed at a lot of things on the road, but I don't think this is one of them. However, I'm not sure I'm understanding the issue. How narrow is the road? There is no room to go around the car? That's actually one of my main annoyances people that will not go around a car that is making a left hand turn. My latest driving annoyance are the digital speed signs that tell you how fast you are going. It's not so much the signs, it's the people who slow down for them. Why? It's not a cop, it's a sign. You didn't know how fast you were going? You don't have a speedometer?

  21. I believe that the Brewers were 23-24 when Buck Rodgers was fired in 1982. Apparently, Selig/Dalton had higher expectations for that team than Antanasio/Melvin has for this team.
  22. So, I never understood thefts like this. What do they do with them? Sell them? To who? Edit: This from Wikipedia: Art theft is the theft of art. This is usually done for the purpose of resale or ransom; occasionally thieves are also commissioned by dedicated private collectors. Stolen art is sometimes used by criminals to secure loans.[1] (edit: link repair... I guess Wikipedia links don't paste very well --1992)
  23. How about Viva la Vida by Coldplay?... I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes Listened as the crowd would sing Now the old king is dead long live the king One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
