  1. Occasionally I'll listen to Cubs game on the radio. I'm really going to miss Santo. I know many have criticized his broadcasting talents. However, I found him very entertaining to listen to. It was like eavesdropping on a die hard, life long, Cubs fan as he watched a game. He truly lived and died with each play and he clearly showed that emotion when he did his broadcasts.
  2. Just think, in 20 or 30 years it will be Fielder, Braun, and Weeks making these types of appearances together.
  3. I believe he made $7,000,000 last year and so it would not surprise me that he's looking for at least $10mil/yr considering the year he had. Such is the nature of sports contracts. Never mind that other than last year I only had 3 other season's in my 12 year career that I pitched 200+ innings and that my stats in most years, other than last year and 2004, were really not very impressive at all. Oh, and never mind that I'll be 35 on Jan 8th. Just look at last year and give me a big raise. I'm sure some team will do just that. I wish I could completely suck at work, have a guaranteed paycheck, and then have one good year and get a huge raise. I'll go a step further than comparing Pavano to Suppan, I'll compare him to Hammonds. I think it would be that big of a mistake. Not quite the extensive injury history, but he also was not the healthiest pitcher with the Yankees and as I mentioned he does not have an extensive history of being an "innings eater" (even though I hate that term). His age and history do not appeal to me at all and I don't think he improves the Brewers pitching picture like splitterpfj suggests.
  4. I think this event runs through Jan 2nd. Even if it were only one day, I don't understand why the day after Thanksgiving would not be a good day?
  5. It bothers me that I live in Waukesha and sometimes we get more lake effect snow than the counties right next to the lake because of the way the "bands of snow" come off the lake. I try to explain that to people I work with (who all live in Milwaukee County) and they give me a non-believing look.
  6. I think it's nice that they give the fans an opportunity to check out the visiting club house. But I think this event would be better served by having it in a more open space. It gets way too crowded in the club house, not to mention that you sometimes have to wait in line just to get in. I think it would be better if they just used the wide open and more spacious basement corridor. Also, since it's usually cold I am usually wearing a bulky winter jacket which makes the situation worse. At least have some place to hang up your jacket before you go in. I probably will not go, mainly because of the crowded small space.
  7. He has always seemed like one of the most underated IF'ers to me. Now he's finally getting a multiyear deal. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/dodgers-reach-agreement-with-juan-uribe.html
  8. Adam's ribs, don't forget the coleslaw. Wait..forget it...that's Chicago. Real Chili. Frozen Pizza with sausage (I'm not sure about all other states, but the last 3 places we vacationed as a family..AZ, FL, Myrtle Beach...we could not find this. Peperoni? - yes, Sausage? - no) This is not really a Milwaukee thing, but when my Aunt and cousins use to visit in the 70's and 80's they would always stock up on powdered donuts. They were not available where they lived in Nova Scotia.
  9. Thanks for all the help. Sounds like we will be ok in our "non red" Winter jackets. As far as the layering up with no jacket..I'm not a cold weather person AT ALL. I can't imagine myself being "too warm" when it's 32 out. I see people wearing shorts when it's 60 or no jacket when it's 50 and I think they are nuts. I have lived in Wisconsin my whole life, but I will never get used to the cold.
  10. Yesterday my son's friend called and their family has 2 extra tickets to tomorrow's Badger game and have invited me and my son to go with them. I have not been to a badger game since college (over 20 years ago) and my son and I are very excited about it. My concern is that it is going to be cold (high of 32) and neither of us have any badger or any red winter outerwear. There is no way I am sitting in that kind of weather in just layers under a badger sweatshirt and I'm not going to go out and purchase red winter jackets just for this (especially not in the madness of today). My son and I will both be wearing our winter jackets - neither of them are red. How serious is this wearing red thing? Will we look really out of place or get dirty looks (the jackets are not purple - Northwestern color)? What if we wear red badger hat's? Will that be good enough?
  11. This seems odd to me. It seems that this could lead to conflicts and "bad blood" if players are given days off and fall just short of reaching the contract milestone. While I understand that the point of this is to reward players for staying healthy and playing well enough to stay in the lineup (or pitching rotation), it seems like it could also cause a player to attempt to play injured or create some tough decisions for management when a player is struggling towards the end of the season. To me, incentives based on actual performance seem to make more sense.
  12. Since I saw your post this morning, I have been listening to Grooveshark at work today. A couple of comments/questions: 1) I'm not a big library or playlist guy. I like to select artists and then have the site play songs by those artists and artists that are similar to those artists. I'm used to Pandora, so I'm not sure if I set things up correctly for the "radio" mode in Grooveshark. I selected a few songs and it seems to be playing other songs based on those selection. However, I'm not sure if the radio "station" is set up to play similar songs basedo the actual songs I selected or the artists. I prefer it base it off the artist. 2) I do like that Grooveshark seems to have a much larger library than Pandora. 3) My biggest complaint, and it's a big one, is that each song seems to come in at a different volumes. One song is really quite, then next is really loud. Even though you can not download the songs onto your computer (to keep) for free on Grooveshark, I'm going to guess that the music industry is eventually going to step in and try to stop this site or demand that they charge a user fee (that they get a piece of). The ability to choose specific songs and create playlists or a library to access anywhere you have internet access without paying anything seems to be walking that fine thin line of music piracy.
  13. It was looking pretty dark and ominous for a while out my window downtown. Seems to all have passed by now.
  14. A tornado watch in Southern WI in November. Don't see that too often!
  15. So there is a new Hyundai (I think it's Hyundai?) comercial where this girl is singing "Up on the rooftop". I couldn't get it out of my head. So I had to look it up. Turns out it's a "group" called Pomplamoose and they have a lot of great cover song videos on YouTube (actually have songs for sale on Itunes as well). I really enjoy how they remade the songs and I love the videos.
  16. I grew up in the wrong climate (Wisconsin). Now I have planted too many roots here to ever leave. I enjoy Milwaukee and Wisconsin, but I'm definitely a warm weather person. I'll take 90 and warmer over 30 and colder any day. I just keep trying to convince myself that there are only really 3 brutal months (Dec - Feb) and December is possibly bareable because of the Holidays. I refuse to believe anyone who says they prefer colder weather to warmer weather. Yesterday I went out for lunch downtown (Milwaukee). It wasn't brutally cold, but it was cold (low 40s and windy - felt closer to low 30s). I notice that the lunch hour streets are dead when the weather starts getting colder. People bring lunches in to work and don't venture out. When the temperatures are 70, 80, or even 90 it's a much more lively scene. A lot more people walking around, people eating outdoors, hot dog vendors, boats on the water, etc. People are not "speed walking" from building to building to get out of the cold. Winter just paints a picture of darkness and coldness, especially after the Holidays. I don't understand how anyone can prefer that over the bright, warm days of summer.
  17. When I was in Vegas a couple of weeks ago I was wearing a Brewer cap with the new logo at a blackjack table. The dealer was looking at my hat and asked if went to the buffet there. I didn't know what she was talking about. She thought it was the logo for the M Casino in Vegas (http://www.themresort.com/). I explained to her it was for the Milwaukee Brewers. At first I thought, well, she's probably not a big baseball fan and it would not be unusual for a non-baseball fan not to recognize the Brewer's logo. Then she started talking about the Yankees in great detail...about what their needs are, who they should go after in the off season, etc. I was then a bit bothered by the fact that she did not recognize the Brewer's logo.
  18. I really think instructing in the minors is a better fit for Peterson. I understand it was for long term arm health reasons, but it seems like Peterson is the type of guy who really wants to breakdown a pitcher and have him start all over. I don't think the majors is the place to do that.
  19. Relatively close is a 1/3 mile or less. The closer the better. It's not like there will be 80,000 at the game, so my assumption is that other than some parking being taken up by weekday workers, it shouldn't be too hard to find a spot near the stadium. Again, I have absolutley no problem paying. I'm never cheap when it comes to parking.
  20. Going to root on Waukesha West at Camp Randall this Friday. I'm not entirely familiar with the parking situation around the stadium. Can anyone give me any good advice for parking on a Friday afternoon? I'm not really concerned about cost. I'll pay $20+ if I have to in order to get relatively close.
  21. My wife and I were just in Vegas last weekend. We really enjoy it there, but it's not for everyone. If you don't gamble it might no be for you, but there is still plenty to see and do. Just walking up and down the strip and exploring all the stores, sights, etc would take a day. It sounds like your wife is looking for something a little more tropical. Vegas does not meet that requirement and if you go on the weekend the pools at the hotels can be very, very crowded. Regardless of where you go, if you are looking for places to stay, I think tripadvisor.com is the best place to get honest reviews on lodging.
  22. I just saw that the Blue Jays acquired Miguel Olivio from from the Rockies last week and then on the same day declined his option for 2011 with the hopes of getting a compensatory draft pick when he signs with another team. I have never seen this type of maneuver before. Is this common?
  23. I don't know if I would say that I "really like" Joe Morgan, but I didn't hate him like other people do. For some reason people seem not to be happy with sportscasters in general. I can't think of one announcer that I dislike or can't listen to. Occasionally I hear one of them say something that makes me go "huh?", but that's about it. edit: Actually...I think Tom Pippins is horrible, but he's not really an announcer.
  24. Thanks gbpdc. I did a little research. Sounds like Jeans are acceptable in most the places as long as they are not too bagy or torn. Tennis shoes are generally not acceptable.
  25. This whole time I was thinking it was Gary Roenicke (former Oriole from the 80's). I guess this is his brother. I don't really remember him as much from his playing days.
