  1. Yeah, I would also disagree with the argument that this will make August and September meaningful and exciting for more clubs. The wild card spot is usually decided by narrrow margin. It just means that one more team that was already fighting for a spot will make the playoffs.
  2. Again, I think a lot of it is Revenue driven. I believe Saturday nights may have better viewing audiences than Friday nights (I'm guessing?) and that's why the WS starts on a Wednesday. Also, in the early rounds, when they have the non-travel days off I think they are trying to avoid having two games going at the same time as much as possible. But I agree. They could really tighten things up much more.
  3. Have they had non-travel off days in the playoffs? I have not noticed any. Also, I think it is designed to have only one day off between rounds (maybe two?), but it's based on each round going the maximum number of games. Also, I think they base the start of the each round, especially the WS, based on maximizing prime TV viewing nights. Much of the post season schedule is set up so that they try not to have games overlap and compete with each other and they have as many prime time games as possible.
  4. Wanted to bump this. My wife and I are leaving for Vegas this weekend. Thanks for all the suggestions. If there are any others, please let me know. Can anyone tell me what kind of dress code there is at these places..Voodoo Lounge, Ghostbar, The Mix, other places mentioned in this thread? Can I wear Tennis shoes? Jeans?
  5. I miss the DH days as well. Remember the twinight DH games? However, with the short attention span of today's sports fan, I'm not sure this would work any more. DH's used to draw bigger crowds because of the "2 for 1" idea, but I think most fans these days would not be interested in spending 6 or 7 hours at the ball park. I think day-night DH's would be a better idea. Have a noon game, clear out the stadium and parking lot then have a 7pm game. Two separate crowds. The only risk is that the first game becomes a marathon game.
  6. I think it depends on the market and the manager. If other teams are offering a manager $3 or $4 million per year, then maybe he's worth that much. I have not heard any reports of this in regards to Valentine.
  7. Definitely would not be for a one game playoff. Would have to be at least 3. The thought I heard was that they could just drop a week from pre-season and start the season earlier (maybe with a roster of 28, then cut that down to 25 after a week or two). Possibly also eliminate an off day or two during the season. My understanding is that shortening the regular season is not something that is likely to happen. Also, listening to Selig speak about this on XM, it sounds like this could actually happen as early as next year (2011).
  8. I was in college and having Easter dinner with my family at The Black Steer (or may have been Steakhouse 100?) on Hwy 100 and Greenfield (There is now a Wallgreens there). I kept running into the bar to see the what was happening with the game. I'll never forget that day.
  9. Went to the Arrowhead/Waukesha West game today. Very exciting game. Don't know what the final stats were, but I'm guessing West almost doubled the total yardage of Arrowhead but just managed to hang on for a 14-10 win. West tried their best to give away the game. Edit: Ok, I guess I was WAY off. Arrowhead actually had 8 more total yards that Waukesha West. Now that I think of it, their QB had a lot of rushing yards. I think most of AH's yards came in the 2nd half.
  10. How about going as the creepy snickers lady from the commercial?
  11. If you are not comfortable with their "final number", leave your phone number and walk out. Don't fall for any of the "have to do it today to get this deal" stuff. Trust me, they will call you.
  12. I used this site last time I bought a new car (6.5 years ago). It's a little poorly organized but I found it pretty helpful. I believe there is a spreadsheet somewhere on the site that will help you come up with a fair price to pay: http://www.carbuyingtips.com/ I think new car buying is much easier than used car buying. There are a lot less variables (condition of car, mileage, etc) and with a little research you can find out exactly what the dealer paid for the car. My advice is to do as much research as possible, print it all out, and have a firm idea of what you want to pay. Don't budge from it. Go into the dealer with all this stuff in a folder. He or she will try to discredit the data you gathered, but who are you going to trust? The car dealer that is trying to sell you a car and collect his/her commission or independent information that you gathered yourself? Stick to your guns, don't get pushed around! 13. I question the partially part and I'm not saying that he do it for little or nothing. Why does he need to be the highest paid manager (which is what I understand $10 over 3 years would make him)? If he has any desire to manage at all, I would think he would be happy with being one of the 5-10 top paid managers. My top questions to him would be why have you not managed in 8 years (I'm sure that there have been teams that are interested)? Did the Brewers pursue Valentine or did Valentine ask the Brewers? Has Valentine asked any team about any managerial openings over the last 8 years? If not, why?
  14. To tell you the truth, until I read this thread, I was not aware that MLB managers made so little. I realize that they didn't make what the players made but I certainly thought that guys like Cox, Torre, LaRussa, Girardi, Francona made more than 2 or 3 million a year. However, I guess they don't (or didn't - Torre, Cox). Yes he has great credentials, but so do other managers who aparently are not making $3+ million a year. I could understand if there were one or two other clubs making him similar offers and we were competing with them, but that does not seem to be the case. My biggest issue with this is that I don't think he really wants to manage again. The only draw for him is the money. If he really wants to manage then he should be more than happy to do it for $2 or $2.5 million a year, which would make him one of the best paid managers in MLB. If he won't do it for that, then he really does not want to manage in the first place.
  15. Really? You have no line at all? $5 million a year? 10 million a year? I know that this will not happen...but you stated "you don't care how much". I realize that money motivates everyone to some degree, but if these reports are true, this seems to be the ONLY thing motivating Valentine to come back to managing.
  16. In the first inning tonight when Lincecum failed to make the throw to 3rd to help get out of jam (ended up getting a double play to get out of it anyways), it was fairly clear that he thought Renteria, who was running to cover 3rd, was the Texas runner advancing to 3rd. This was the only logical explaination. However, Tim McCarver could not figure this out.
  17. I understand this, but you have to have a line somewhere. What about $4 million a year? $5 million? Maybe $1 million is not going to make a big difference in payroll. However, if you take this attitude with every contract you sign. You end up with a bunch of overplayed players (and manager) and $10 to $20 million less in your budget that you should have. There is a market and a value for everything. If Girardi is negotiating a contract for $3 million a year...I'm not sure how Valentine can be worth $3.3 million. Is some other club offering him this? Like someone else said..if he's asking for this type of money, I'm concerned about his motivation to manage.
  18. Comments likethis by fans have always driven me absolutely crazy. Why do the fans care how much a player or a manager or coach might get paid?? Or make comments like "he's not worth that much". IT'S NOT YOUR MONEY!! So who cares?? I have always been one to believe you do whatever it takes financially to help your team succeed. If it means paying a manager 3-4 million a year, so be it. It's Mark A's money, not mine. I'm not sure why this drives you crazy. You do understand that they don't have an infinite amount of money to spend, right? As mentioned, the more they spend on a manager, the less they can spend on payroll. Same with Fielder if it takes $20+ million per year to sign him, that is likely about 25% of their total payroll, leaving less to spend on other needs, namely pitching. This is why fans care how much is spent on players. Also, indirectly, it is our money. Also, as mentioned, Mark A. is not paying for these things out of his pocket. It comes from revenues, including ticket sales.
  19. Umm. What? EDIT: For comparison's sake, Joe Girardi signed a 3-yr., $7.5M contract with the Yankees prior to the 2008 season. So Bobby V. reportedly wants the Brewers to pay him 133% of what the richest team in baseball pays its manager? Not to mention Girardi works in a much more hostile environment than Milwaukee with greater expectations.
  20. Got back from the Waukesha West game about 20 minutes ago. The wind was brutal..left when West scored a TD to go up 30-13 with about 8 minutes left in the 4th qtr. Verona had was going against the wind in the 4th qtr, so I felt pretty confident that West would hold on. It's crazy that they now have to play at Arrowhead to advance. I still don't get how Hartford is a #1 seed in that bracket.
  21. I wonder if any of the games will be cancelled tonight because of the wind. If you listen to the weather forecasters, apparently this is the beginning of the apocalypse.
  22. Fox's use of the NFL music for the MLB playoffs. You know, the one that sounds like that Christmas song..."Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up, let's go. Let's look at the snow"
  23. I have a friend who said that is the case.Yes, someone I know confirmed to me today that this is how they do it as well. I really don't understand that. Does it not occure to them that some conferences are stronger than others?? This really should not be that difficult to figure out.
  24. I'm not sure how much truth there is to it, but I have been told by my ticket representive that season ticket holder tenure is also taken into account where you get placed for post season tickets. We are 20 game season ticket holders, but we also got tickets for the 2008 playoffs in the lodge level. We have been season ticket holders since the early 90s.
