  1. The projections are in line with his actual numbers from his last ~1100 PAs (2008-2011)... I don't think valuing players based on those numbers is out of line.
  2. Lucroy won't maintain his current batting average. He'll settle in to a .260 BA with around a .320 obp... not bat but not that good for a #2 hitter. Go with something like this and we'll be fine: Weeks Hart/McGehee Braun Fielder Hart/McGehee Lucroy Betancourt Gomez
  3. You're right that it isn't a huge difference but it is a difference, so why give up the extra baserunners. Just using some hypothetical numbers, lets say you have 700 plate appearances for the #2 hitter during the season and your options are Gomez and his .300/.360 line with excellent base running and a theoretical .350/400 hitter with average base running. The theoretical guy is going to get on base 35 times more during the season. With a 35% "scoring rate" he'd score 12 more runs over the course of the season. Gomez baserunning skills might get him an extra couple runs but I would argue that those runs would be cancelled out by the added runs that Weeks scores due to the improved slugging percentage. So overall, 12 runs isn't overly significant but why give them up when you don't have to?
  4. Braun is making $4M in '11, $6M in '12, and $8.5M in '13 which are his would-be arbitration years. We now own his next 7 free agent years for $127M. Compare that to the 7 year $148M contract that Adrian Gonzalez signed and we are getting a huge steal, even considering how much in advance we are doing this. Also keep in mind that assuming a 4% inflation rate, salaries could be almost 50% higher by the time this contract ends compared to today.
  5. He's chasing the same number of pitches outside the strike zone, he's just making more contact on the ones he chases and fouls many them off to extend the at bat.
  6. I'd actually love to see this: Weeks Braun Hart Fielder McGehee Morgan Betancourt Lucroy Pitch
  7. I've been playing with Retrosheet's play by play data from the 2010 Brewers and figured I'd post total plate appearances by lineup position in various sitiuations. <table style="width: 1047px; height: 196px;" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><col style="width: 84pt;" width="112"> <col style="width: 128pt;" width="170"> <col style="width: 91pt;" width="121"> <col style="width: 128pt;" width="171"> <col style="width: 84pt;" width="112"> <col style="width: 128pt;" width="170"> <tbody><tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; width: 84pt; text-align: center;" width="112" height="20">Lineup Position</td> <td class="xl63" style="width: 128pt; text-align: center;" width="170">Plate Appearances</td> <td class="xl63" style="width: 91pt; text-align: center;" width="121">PA w/ Runners On</td> <td class="xl63" style="width: 128pt; text-align: center;" width="171">PA w/ Runners On & 2 Out</td> <td class="xl63" style="width: 84pt; text-align: center;" width="112">PA w/ RISP</td> <td class="xl63" style="width: 128pt; text-align: center;" width="170">PA w/ RISP & 2 Out</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">1</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">771</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">272</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">120</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">160</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">84</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">2</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">752</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">344</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">140</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">176</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">93</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">3</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">733</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">330</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">101</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">184</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">67</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">4</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">717</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">376</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">181</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">215</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">106</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">5</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">701</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">334</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">141</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">210</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">98</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">6</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">682</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">329</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">137</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">195</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">96</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">7</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">668</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">307</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">131</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">198</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">88</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">8</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">653</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">307</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">130</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">198</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">96</td> </tr> <tr style="height: 15pt;" height="20"> <td class="xl63" style="height: 15pt; text-align: center;" height="20">9</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">627</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">290</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">136</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">167</td> <td style="text-align: center;" class="xl63">91</td> </tr> </tbody></col></col></col></col></col></col></table> Gomez at #2 is killing us...
  8. Not really sure what economic problems you are speaking of... The whole world was in a recession and that probably caused revenues to be depressed slightly. However, take a look at this article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/a...lb&partnerId=rss_mlb It basically shows that baseball has withstood the recession much better than most industries. With all that already being said, why would the players ever agree to a maximum salary? The hard cap was accepted in the NHL because the owners were losing a ton of money and the players basically had to accept a pay cut or go play in Europe.
  9. Just ordered my Greinke jersey from the Brewers store. $20 off online orders over $99 until tomorrow!!
  10. Texas says they aren't limiting themselves to starting pitching in trying to improve their team. Anyone they have that would make sense in a deal for Fielder?
  11. I'm not trying to tear down the biz, but they announced the show was ending several months before the writers strike. At the time, they said they'd do 48 more episodes (16 per season). The episode counts actually ended up going 14,17,17. So really they didn't lose anything except a little of season 4. Considering what they had already shown for season 6, the ending was good and made sense. However, it's frustrating that the ending had very little, if anything, to do with what happened before season 6.
  12. There was an episode in season 2 where Walt (or an image of Walt) was shown and he was making whisper sounds. He wasn't dead at the time. Also, if you look at Lostpedia, people have transcribed some of the whispers. In one of them, Frank Duckett is heard saying "It will come back around" just like after Sawyer shot him in Australia. There is no evidence that Frank was ever on the island or did anything wrong to the island.
  13. Choice is probably more like Ibanez and a bunch of extra cash or Werth...
  14. There's a shuttle that leaves from Zim's, usually 90 minutes before the game. Takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the stadium but that would leave you at least an hour to walk around and crash tailgates.
  15. Anyone have guesses on who Player X could be? Based on reading his past blogs, the following information seems to be implied: - Current starter (hitter, not pitcher) - Has a family - Received a long-term contract or nice signing bonus early - Seems to know Heath Bell personally - His backup is set to make the team - Good deal of knowledge about Ryan Braun, Bill Hall, Alex Rodriguez, Roger Clemens, Matt Holliday - Has played in both the Cactus and Grapefruit leagues - Has played for more than one MLB team - American born
  16. Pretty good read: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=10122
  17. Link Is this real? I haven't seen it reported anywhere else...
  18. I didn't see any threads about this, so I thought I'd ask if anyone was growing a moustache for Movember? Long story short, it's basically like wearing pink for breast cancer awareness only men wear moustaches for prostate and testicular cancer awareness. My girlfriend hasn't expressed total disgust in the idea, so I'm going to give it a try (even though my ability to grow a 'stache is not very intimidating) Check out the website for more information: http://us.movember.com/about/ Additionally there are prizes for those who can raise the most in donations. I have a team set up called (Mo)nster. Feel free to join my team if you'd like - there are prizes for teams as well.
  19. Gerut's ball in play and plate discipline stats don't really back up looking lost. He has a 17.8% line-drive percent which is pretty much in line with his 18.6% career average as are his GB% and FB% numbers. His plate discipline numbers are actually slightly better than his career numbers and very much in line with his numbers from 2008. The problem that I see is the BABIP of .207.
  20. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090708&content_id=5756046&vkey=news_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak&partnerId=rss_oak Eveland was DFA'd by Oakland. He's struggled in the bigs this year but has been successful in AAA with a 3.49 ERA. ZIPS has him projected for a 4.06 ERA the rest of the season. He'd be a much cheaper alternative than making a "big" move for an ace and could potentially be a solid middle-of-the-rotation guy.
  21. I'd take him as a PH if he can't play the outfield anymore.
  22. I think the Brewers are waiting on Sheets to see if we can get the draft picks from someone else signing him. If no one else will sign him, we'll swoop in and offer him an incentive-laden deal to shore up the rotation for one more year.
  23. In order to create more competitiveness, baseball should expand to 32 teams and have both of the two new teams play in New York.
  24. Over his career, Weeks is a slightly above average 2B with a .754 OPS. And that is with a .243 average. This year, despite hitting only .216, his OPS is just a shade under .700. The way I look at it is that for Weeks, it is just a matter of having those extra singles fall in for him. If he can get his average this season to his career number, he'll be above average. And if he can improve it to the .260-.270 range... watch out. That is where the Rickey Henderson comparisons would start.
