  1. Nope. IMO, he has a higher ceiling at the plate and the potential to play third base, while LaPorta is basically a first baseman playing the outfield. LaPorta is a excellent prospect, but I'd much rather have a lefty hitting third baseman than a righty hitting first baseman. Fair enough. I do think that Gamel should stay in the minors all of next year if we plan on using him at 3B. Reports say that his defense is much improved, but I'm afraid that much be an upgrade from atrocious to bad at this point.
  2. Are you saying that you wouldn't think about trading Gamel because of his performance this year? Mat Gamel has a .415 BABIP (insanely high) this year while LaPorta has a .312 BABIP (pretty normal). If Gamel's BABIP evens out, his numbers will pale in comparison to LaPorta. They will still be very good, but not ridiculous like they currently look. Gamel is a career .885 OPS hitter and appears to have made some improvement to this game this season. However, I wouldn't be relying on him quite as much as many people are right now.
  3. The only reason Sabathia has 200 more innings of "wear and tear" is that Sheets has missed about 200 innings over the past three years. Furthermore, Sheets' FIP in 2008 is 3.55. Sabathia's is 3.31. Not such a decided edge this year if you ask me.
  4. I'd like to add him. He has an 811 career OPS with an 81.5% steal rate and excellent defense in right. Maybe not quite worth $12 million per year but I wouldn't say that he's grossly overpaid. His presence would also increase our revenue through jersey/t-shirt/other sales which would help offset the amount that he is overpaid.
  5. Ryan Braun had a .760 OPS after 135 at bats. Now after 259 AB's that OPS is at .904. If you write players off on their cold streaks, you'll miss out on their hot streaks. Cameron at .699 isn't even that far off his career mark of .784. That is nothing that a 4 or 5 game hot streak couldn't even out.
  6. The reason I asked is because, as a former umpire, I always ruled that the players on the field should know the rules and mis-speaking on behalf of the umpire shouldn't change the rules. The circumstances would obviously be different if it were little kids playing but this was a pretty competitive softball league. In my opinion, the distinction is that it isn't a "judgement" call like fair/foul or ball/strike would be.
  7. While we are on the subject of rules, I had a this softball situation a couple weeks ago: One out, runner on 1st. Batter pops a ball up to 2B. The umpire incorrectly yelled, "Infield Fly, Batter's out!". The 2nd baseman dropped the pop up and neither runner attempted to move. Should the umpire have allowed the 2B to pick up the ball and turn the easy double play?
  8. You are right. First contact with the ball is what matters, not when the catch is completed.
  9. I really enjoy eating "tiger meat" at holiday celebrations. I've normally heard it called either Steak Tartare or Cannibal Sandwiches though. Oh and I could eat good sashimi every day.
  10. Edgar Renteria is a former Met. Thanks for the info BA.
  11. I think the average person changes jobs like 10 or more times and careers about 4 times during their life. Pick something that interests you now and it will likely lead you to many opportunities that you probably didn't think existed.
  12. If you know you want to work in marketing but are not interested in doing sales, I'd go for the marketing major, especially if you have no relevant experience. Otherwise, I think you'd be fine with either. With business majors, I think it is most important to determine if you want to go into a career that is heavy on numbers/math like accounting and finance or if you are more interested in the "softer" sciences of business that would lead into marketing, management, or HR majors. Once you make that decision, it's just a matter of finding that first job in a somewhat related field. Not many companies are going to discriminate against you because you didn't take those two extra marketing courses. I'd say as you enter your senior year, you should be focusing most of your energy on starting to interview for jobs. That process can help you figure out what you would actually like to do. Plus, I get the feeling nowadays that the biggest companies look to sign college students as early as their first semester of senior year and many offer interviews right on campus. And I wouldn't agree that no one respects marketing majors. Clearly we are in a Coca-Cola generation where everything has a corporate sponsor so someone respects marketing.
  13. Just throwing this out as a long-shot possibility but what if for whatever reason Kate stole Aaron from Claire (something to be shown in an upcoming episode would obviously have to give Kate reason to do so). It doesn't seem very Lost-ish to give that obvious of a sign that Claire is dead and then not come up with a big twist on the storyline. I wonder if Kate doesn't want Aaron to watch TV because she doesn't want him to see Claire, who is also a celebrity. The obvious guess is that she doesn't want Aaron to see/know about the trial.
  14. I went with Mooninite Bombers this year after all the hooplah with the Aqua Teen Hunger Force publicity stunt...
  15. Sorry guys, I jinxed the no hitter... I was doing some work on my computer and I had the game on mute nearby and was checking in periodically but not paying close attention. I glanced over in time to see Rickie get intentionally walked and Yo get his hit. Then I realized I didn't see the first couple runs so I went on Yahoo to check the box score. Only at this point, I did I notice Yo hadn't given up a hit. So when the Brewers came back from commercial break, I turned the TV off mute just as Yo began pitching the next inning. Needless to say, if the difference between Yo making the Hall of Fame or not comes down to never throwing a no-hitter, he can blame me... My apologies, Yo.
  16. The picks will also cost money to sign while Inman, Thatcher & Garrison are basically playing for free right now...
  17. I'm not too worried about Suppan. If average pitchers get 4 years for $50 million in free agency, teams that need pitching will take a guy who has 2 years and $25 million left on his contract. I think Suppan will be in our rotation this year and next year and then traded following the 2008 season.
  18. Cordero actually had slightly better peripherals for the Rangers last year than he did for the Brewers. His post-trade performance seems more like it was luck evening out. I would have imagined that it would have been easier to get a middle relief guy from a team that wasn't in contention, who would have less reason to hold on to a upcoming FA through the end of the season...
  19. Linebrink is an upgrade over ever single part of our pen maybe sans Coco. Linebrink from two years ago, yes. Linebrink this year... probably not. He's also going from a great pitchers park to a hitters park and his K rate has plummeted this year. A contending team wouldn't give up a top of the line bullpen guy in the pennant race. Linebrink just isn't that great anymore.
  20. I see what you're saying but OBP is a measure of actual skill while height isn''t. I'd say a better comparison for short RHPs not being successful would be like saying that big, fat, 1Bs wont age well. Results wise, Inman is basically where Gallardo was last year. You can downgrade him some because of his stature but not to the point where we'd give him up for someone like Linebrink. A contending team just gave up what some are calling an "elite set up man", for a couple guys who probably wont play for them this year. That probably wouldn't have happened if they felt he was still the same player he was a couple years ago.
  21. Size is a huge factor with RHP's. Saying "other than size" is like talking about a hitter with "other than his OBP". You can almost name all successful short RHP on one hand...Pedro, Oswalt, and so on. Al, I have to disagree with this comment. OBP is a measure of results and Will has put up nothing but good results at every level he's pitched at. While his height is somewhat of a concern, at some point you have to let the results outweigh the warts. And regardless of whether you think Inman will pan out or not, given his peripherals he definitely has a lot of upside. And we just traded a 20 year old pitcher with upside to rent a reliever who is currently carrying a 5 K/9 ratio (significantly down from his 7.6 K/9 career mark and 8.5 K/9 in his best season) and a 3.80 ERA (5.69 FIP) in possibly the best pitchers park in the majors.
