  1. Evan Frederickson has been very impressive in his first two starts. For a hard throwing guy with control problems, he hasn't had many control problems.
  2. Maddux I like but at this point, I think we need a compliment to Sheets more than another back end guy. And I hear Brad Nelson hits pretty good.

  5. I've been meaning to talk to you about your avatar.
  6. Just to clarify... his name is Jonathan Lucroy.
  7. You might want to wait a little longer in the future for Woogie to get his IGT graphics up... there's still 5.5 hours to go before game time. Anyway, http://www.nickel-enterprises.com/SixBattles.jpg
  8. Yah, I'm gonna guess that Gallardo figures prominently into the Brewers' plans as long as he doesn't decide to do aerial calisthenics over baserunners again in the future. He could well be our best pitcher next year. Greinke isn't going anywhere for mid-level prospects, unless you consider Jeffress and LaPorta to be mid-level prospects.
  9. Another issue to consider for skipping starts in Manny Parra's inning cap this year. He's already about halfway to what I would guess his inning limit would be (around 160 IP) and we're not yet halfway through the year, not to even speak of the playoffs. If he keeps pitching well, he'll have to be pulled from the rotation at some point if they don't start skipping him because he'll run out of innings. I don't want to see any more than about 12 regular season starts from him the rest of the way unless we fall way out of playoff contention. As for the other pitchers, I tend to think it is tied to the bullpen. Do we have a good enough bullpen to hold onto a lead given a little extra workload every night on average? I'd like to think so but our pen hasn't yet performed to expectations. Maybe if they fully regroup once Gagne gets back and Riske gets untracked, Ned will be more inclined to not skip starts.
  10. Wow, this is quite the sad news. Carlin is one of my two or three very favorite comedians... he'll be sorely missed. It's amazing how funny and relevant he stayed, right up to the last show of his I saw (the HBO Special a few months ago).
  11. There once was a moderator that had to be removed for bad moderating behavior, so I'm sure that if there really is a problem that it will be taken care of. I'm not really sure I've seen much serial one or two word posting on here lately outside of the IGTs by a moderator or anyone else. I'd be especially interested to see examples of that because I just must be missing those threads. And I think the main thing with the 2-4 posts in a row thing is that people aren't comfortable quoting more than one person inside a single post, even if the points are very much related. Either they just respond as they read down a thread or just aren't comfortable enough with the Yuku controls to do it. We've been helping people with it and I think there's been a palpable decrease since we've started paying more attention to it over the past month or so.
  12. It depends if how sure you are about Salome's ability to catch at the major league level. If you have any serious doubts about it, you might trade him before other teams begin to have the same doubts.
  13. Weeks' defensive metrics aren't top notch, but they've been trending upward his entire career and IMO they're reaching a level where he's no longer a defensive liability. With the caveat that it's still kind of early to put a ton of weight in these stats, he's 13th of 22 qualified second basemen in RZR and has an OOZ rate as high as anyone not named Adam Kennedy or Chase Utley. That suggests to me that his perceived defensive deficiencies at second base are more based on the memories of previous terribleness than what it actually going on now. From a personal point of view, I'm to the point where I no longer wince when a ball is hit in his vicinity. But that's totally subjective. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. It's certainly possible, but defense is kind of a fickle skill from prospect to prospect. For some the light bulb turns right now, for others it's a dimmer switch that turns on slowly, and for others the electricity just doesn't work. And you can't say for certain what will happen to guys that haven't figured it out yet. I hope he does figure it out sooner than later obviously. Salome might hold more value to the Brewers as a trading chip with defensive potential in the short to mid term. The Brewers are in the fairly unique position of having three (including Lucroy, and counting Lawrie) catching prospects amongst their top 10-15 overall prospects, and then there's still Lou Palmisano and Vinny Rottino on the next tier, with some decent depth in Andy Bouchie, Shawn Zarraga and other guys behind them.
  15. Yes, but since they're both signed, they both should be on a roster. Edit: Ryan Jensen is also missing.
  16. Last year Weeks had the 10th best OPS of the 27 second basemen who qualified for the batting title. He also had the 8th best OBP of that group. That's hitting pretty well IMO.
  17. Santo pitched the game of his life this afternoon. Hopefully the days of walking three batters per inning are over. Long live Santo! Steve Hammond is acquitting himself well in his first taste of AAA. 6 hits (all singles), no runs or walks and 3 K's through 5 innings.
  18. Thanks for the link. Where are Cody Scarpetta and Josh Romanski?
  19. Because that's all that matters when you're teaching impressionable young pro ballplayers.
  20. If he were to be called up to the big leagues right now, Salome would have to be either a DH or a diminutive/not good first baseman. He has the tools to be a good major league backstop, including a very strong arm, but basic things like footwork, blocking balls and calling a game are still lacking. Much as with Gamel, he won't be promoted for his bat. And frankly if he doesn't work out defensively as a catcher, he'll have to be traded to an AL team because his body type is really only suited for catching and they don't have the DH in the NL.
  21. Correct... I should have worded that more clearly. The Brewers seem to be intent on not rushing Gamel because he's a truly exciting long-term option at third base, as long as he can play third base. He'll be given every opportunity in the minors to prove that he can, even if it means handling AA/AAA pitching for awhile longer than we're used to seeing a player do. After Gamel, the Brewers best options in the minors at third base are Taylor Green (who is a second baseman) and Brett Lawrie (when he signs, and if he doesn't take to catching). As for LaPorta, the Brewers have nearly limitless options in the corner outfield and first base. Heck, Gamel's an option there. And for my money, that makes Gamel more valuable to the Brewers.
  22. That's all correct, but I'd still rather have a 3B than a LF/RF, if both are nothing special on defense and the 3B is left handed. I think Gamel will stick at third long term because he'll be granted the time there that Braun was never given. I doubt he'll ever win a Gold Glove, but the same holds true for LaPorta. And I just think Gamel has more upside as a hitter in part because he's more athletic than LaPorta is. That's no knock against LaPorta, who has tremendous upside himself. I guess the arguments for who has the better bat might be personal preference and splitting hairs, but again, I'll take the lefty 3B over the righty corner OF/1B. You could also look at it as LaPorta having more trade value anyway given Gamel's current problems defensively.
  23. He's not... he just figured out that if he threw left handed, Branyan would not be in the lineup.
  24. Nope. IMO, he has a higher ceiling at the plate and the potential to play third base, while LaPorta is basically a first baseman playing the outfield. LaPorta is a excellent prospect, but I'd much rather have a lefty hitting third baseman than a righty hitting first baseman.
  25. Royals 2008 media guide: http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/0c635492488691e8d32d9b642d4cf2da2557999.jpg End is correct.
