  1. I just calculated the savings bonds I still have. The soonest one will reach its final mature date is 2027, when I will turn 47 years old.
  2. I had this problem last year where I could not replicate the driving range successes on the golf course. I spent lots and lots of time at the range, especially in April and May. For the most part, I hit well with my driver. When I got to the course, I was all over the place. Also, I did have a problem at one point last year where my hands would almost get stuck at the top of the back swing when I would start my hip rotation. My body would open way up, opening up the club face, forcing me to have a wicked slice. It happened with pretty much every club, including the pitching wedge. It was beyond frustrating...I went from hitting the best I ever did to not being able to hit at all.
  3. I am getting tired of websites changing their interfaces/navigation. This is mainly targeted at Google today (though Facebook, that new timeline thing is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen). Google appears to be slowly changing their navigation from the black bar at the top of the page to one hidden by the Google logo. Some days I get the black bar, some days I get the new one. I hate the new one. Hate it. It seems there are extra mouse movements that I didn't have before. When I wanted to check my mail, I clicked "Mail." Now, I have to hover, scroll down with my mouse, then click "Mail." I know...it's not that big of a deal, but it seems pointless.
  4. Unfortunately (well, fortunately in my mind) I live in the Madison area. There are 4 programs over here that I can attend. The biggest question mark for me is would I be happy leaving teaching...What if I become an administrator and hate it? Also, I have a very good relationship with most of my students, and that would be hard to give up as well. I guess I could go through the program and keep my options open.
  5. She cried for about an hour and a half of the drive, and nothing would calm her down. We were in central Iowa, so there are limited places to stop to get out to walk around. She scratched up her face due to her excessive screaming. On top of the car ride, the longest stretch of time she slept at night was 2 hours. Normally, she only wakes up once in the middle of the night if she does at all. When she does, she falls back to sleep on her own. Staying in a hotel, we couldn't just let her cry it out, so we didn't sleep either.
  6. Traveling 4.5 hours with an 8 month old is not as fun as it sounds.
  7. I've been a teacher for three years. Lately, for some reasons I still can't put into words, I have had this desire to continue my education to become an administrator. It almost makes my prior education seem like a waste. I worked very hard to get to where I am right now, now I'm thinking of moving on. I am totally happy with what I'm doing, so I don't know where this desire is coming from. In order to do this, I will have to return to school, again, to get my Master's and license. It's going to be difficult to afford to pay for my Master's, but I'd have 7 years to complete it (and the pay as an administrator would pay for the degree in no time). I guess I'm trying to figure out 1)whether I should do it or not and 2) when to start/how long to take. I think my wife is on board with whatever decision I make, now I just have to make one.
  8. Hawing, your report of great coupons piqued my interest, so I went to JSOnline to see if I was able to subscribe to the Sunday paper. Despite living only 6 miles from you, it is not available to me because I do not live in Madison. It must be very difficult to drive to Middleton...
  9. Figured this thread is as good as any to ask this question... We have Charter for our ISP. It appears they allow you to purchase your own cable modem instead of spending the $7/month to lease one. Does anyone own their own modem? Are there any serious drawbacks to owning vs. leasing a modem? I guess if I can buy one for $75-80, it will pay for itself within a year.
  10. Yeah, I did a check and it looks like the computer is recognizing only 256MB of RAM. I am going to open it up just to make sure there is no RAM inside that is not installed properly (plus I have an internal hard drive I'm going to install on it).
  11. While it's still on the front page, I have an issue. We have an old desktop. I think we got it in 2005. Over the course of time, it has gotten slower and slower...so slow that it takes minutes to open even the most basic programs. I finally reformatted it last night. After the reformat, it was running fairly well. However, as I was downloading programs and setting them up, it proceeded to slow way down again, and I got a Low Virtual Memory error message. Just out of curiosity, is it possible for memory to go bad? Part of me wonders if that's what is going on because the computer needs so much virtual memory to operate.
  12. In no order... Wisconsin hockey vs. North Dakota- Similar rivalry to Minnesota, in my mind. Wisconsin MBB vs. Michigan State (Izzo is still fuming from the Harris-Tucker alley-oop during a blow-out) Packers vs. Vikings- This is a bigger rivalry to me than the Bears. I think it's because Minnesota has been better over the past 20 years than the Bears. I hate the Cardinals and Cubs, but the Brewers play them so often throughout the year that I don't get stoked when they play.
  13. Hammer, I'm going through the same thing right now. I'm also learning the downfalls of day care. At day care, my daughter is always around someone, even if it's another little one. Day care is closed this week, so I am home with her on my own today, and she won't play alone. It is making my day very unproductive.
  14. I'm not sure if any of you saw Xavier's post game interview, but a couple of the guys involved were very unapologetic, and said "we have gangstas in the locker room" or something along those lines. I guess the coach was floored when he saw the interview later that day. I know that rivalry is very heated. A good friend of mine went to Xavier, and I remember him having a t-shirt that said "Catholics vs. Convicts" on it, and that was well over 10 years ago.
  15. Gates also threw the basketball as hard as he could have at the guys who initially got in the fight. This was one of the crazier basketball fights I had seen in a while.
  16. There are some gas stations around where as you are driving to a pump, the cashier inside announces over the PA a pump that is available. I don't understand why that is helpful at all. First of all, they don't know which side of the car the tank door is on, so I may be driving to a specific pump so it's easier for me to get in or out, or so it's easier for others. Also, what if there are multiple cars? How do we know who they are talking to? Finally, I always have the radio on in the car, sometimes quite loud. Do they think we can hear them?
  17. My father-in-law and brother-in-law went last year. They flew from Rockford to Phoenix-Mesa, rented a car, and drove to LA...staying near Palm Springs, I think (pretty far out). They drove to a trains station (expecting heavy traffic, which they never encountered), then rode a train downtown, then out to near the stadium. They said it worked like a charm, but got down there to the stadium too early.
  18. Time for my annual family holiday rant... Due to Christmas being on a weekend this year (and everyone working up to the 23rd), there is no possible way to squeeze my family and my wife's family Christmas into one weekend. We alternate Christmas Eve every year, and this year it's with my wife's family. We had planned on celebrating at my parents' house the weekend before (they live near Milwaukee, we live in Madison, my sister lives in Eau Claire). However, due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, my brother-in-law now has to work that weekend, which means we were going to go to my sister's house instead. It's not a big deal for us. However, my parents are traveling to Iowa for Christmas to see my grandparents, now they don't want to drive long distances two weekends in a row...never mind that my sister and I were both prepared to do that ourselves before plans got changed around.
  19. Two things today... 1. I love dogs, but I won't take care of a dog that isn't mine in a house that isn't mine, unless their owners are not home. My sister pawns off doggy care to her guests, and it bothers me. 2. If I order an item on November 28 from Amazon, I should not be receiving a message saying the item will be shipped after December 25. I didn't know we had to purchase Christmas gifts 6 weeks ahead of time to get them on time. I understand I will probably get it in time, but the thought is ridiculous.
  20. College athletes can get jobs, but it's not easy. I hired a member of a crew team when I worked in college athletics, and worked with some other revenue-sport athletes, but the work done (and pay) was by the university, which has wage rules for college students. The athletes I worked with worked for the university during the summer...not the school year, but the crew team member worked the whole year. When I hired the crew athlete, I had to fill out paperwork and had to submit it to the athletic department, who had to send it to the NCAA clearinghouse. It took a week or two for her employment to get approved. I had to provide a detailed description of the work done, the wage, and the hours, and she may have had to submit her pay stubs...I don't remember. But, these athletes all worked for the university, so it was a lot more difficult to be paid under the table.
  21. Why do you have to enter your birthday when you visit a brewery's website? It's not like underagers can't enter a random year or anything to get access.
  22. Sorry for posting a GIF, but here is his tirade. It's pretty clear he is yelling at himself. http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/762236/carp.gif
  23. I think the Brewers are going to go into this series with a chip on their shoulder, especially after the way the past couple of series' went with the Cards. I see the Brewers winning in 6 or 7.
  24. Being it was the 10th inning, wasn't it Provus with the call?
  25. I have found that if you use charcoal, the grills cool off pretty quickly after you dump the coals...maybe 20 minutes or so and it's cool to the touch. Just make sure you dump the coals right after you are done cooking, and it will be cool enough to put in your car before you leave to the game.
