  1. Around this time last year, the city cut down a tree on my terrace. They finally replaced the tree about 3 weeks ago. Along with getting a new tree, they removed the old stump, filled it, and seeded it with grass. Well, they only put enough straw down to cover about a quarter of the spot where they planted the grass. The spot gets full sun...from 10 AM-7:00 PM, so even though I water every night, it dries out quickly the next day if it's sunny. Seed that was under the straw is growing quite nicely. The area that was not protected is becoming a home to weeds, and no grass has germinated. It bugs me that the city did such a terrible job in reseeding that spot.
  2. As a kid, I liked Oddibe McDowell. I always thought it sounded like, "ought to be." I also enjoy Milton Bradley just because Uecker once said of him, "Isn't that the board game guy? He should be crossing 'Go' not home plate."
  3. Not only that, but I heard Community has moved to Friday night. I know in this day in age, we can watch it whenever we want online, but Thursday is one of two nights I'm normally not busy. If I can't keep up with Modern Family, how will I do with Community?
  4. I enjoyed the Pasta Tree when I lived there. I think it's on Prospect. Quite, somewhat small, and great pasta. It's been 6 years since I've been there, though, so I'm not sure if it's still as good as it was.
  5. The city also blew it when they decided not to reconnect the new convention center with the US Cellular Arena/Milwaukee Theatre. I know the original plan was to expand the exhibition hall north towards Wells, then reconnect, but it did not bring in the revenue needed to do so (due to lack of hotel space). That is what is so unfortunate about this whole new arena idea. There is no true way to make it "right" unless they raze the Cell to build the new arena...but I think the footprint for a new arena would be way too big to fit that space. Many of the cities that have larger conventions have their arena (or domed stadium) tied in with their convention center, and that is just not possible anymore with Milwaukee.
  6. The length is the same, and that's where most sight line problems occur (behind the net on the 3rd level above the 4th row...can't see the goalie). It's more the design of the Kohl Center that causes the problems, not the sheet of ice.
  7. I believe the Kohl Center is one of the only college arenas to use an Olympic sized ice sheet. I think it is 98 feet wide or so, compared to 85(?) feet for the NHL. I actually wonder if this plays any role in the success of Badgers in the NHL.
  8. The city cut down a tree on the terrace between the sidewalk and the street last June. The stump was removed 3 weeks ago, and now there is a giant orange cone in the hole. There is also a stick in the ground saying what type of tree will be planted, but still no tree, and it has now been 11 months.
  9. Did you have to bundle to get that price? If not, I may have to make a call. I was actually going to bring up the same topic. I'm considering dropping Charter and going with TDS. For the price I'm paying, I can get 15 MBPS plus phone, which we need to get at some point anyways. I was wondering if anyone had TDS and if they had good luck streaming Netflix with it.
  10. I love this song/video, and if I hear it, it is stuck in my head for weeks at a time...
  11. 13 games into the MLB season, and All-Star Game voting is already open. I don't know why it bugs me, but it does.
  12. Failed the first time around on Pol Pot, but got it once I continued (guessed Ho Chi Minh at first). Then got Henry Kissinger without a problem. Didn't do so well with McGeorge Bundy, then again, few would.
  13. Gotta love seeing this from the NWS... SPOTTERS SHOULD GEAR UP AND BE READY FOR ACTIVATION AS SEVERAL BOUTS OF MORE WIDESPREAD SEVERE WEATHER IS LOOKING MORE LIKELY ACROSS SOUTHERN WISCONSIN THIS WEEKEND.
  14. Ha...I have Gameday up, and they have a new feature where they give a "scouting report" during ABs. During DeWitt's AB, the Scout said, "Marco Estrada is trying to tie up Blake DeWitt with fastballs inside, where he is batting .333 this season, compared to .000 overall." So...he somehow has a hit without getting a hit? I see....
  15. Meat Parfait! They sold those last year...I had one during the playoffs. It is fantastic!
  16. Casey, where did you get that? My students would love to see that (well, I'd love to show them that) when we get to WWII. On a totally unrelated note, the owl made a visit again last night at 1 AM. This may turn into a "Bugging You" post, but I think owls are cool, so I'm not terribly bugged by it. This time, it was alone. I have done some research, and by the sounds of things, we have a Great Horned Owl living by us. I think I have seen it once...being chased by crows.
  17. I was awoken the other morning at 5 AM, thinking I was hearing my daughter talking in the other room. After I got out of my fog of being woken from a deep sleep, I realized it was not my daughter and was a pair of owls hooting away. One must have been right next to our house because it was obviously loud enough to wake me up and keep me awake. Yes, I realize that I confused owls for my daughter, but I'm used to being woken by her, not by owls.
  18. When I was a student at UW, there was a place on State St. that served Russian dumplings (pelmeni). It was my favorite place to go for food. Due to some arguments between the owners, the place closed, reopened, then closed again for good. Well, I discovered that the original owner has become a cook at a coffee place/deli in Fitchburg, and pelmeni are now available again. I went there for lunch today, and they were absolutely delicious.
  19. Nothing like a few "Badger Badger Badger Mushroom Mushroom" lines to drive someone crazy... Find the flash version, and it will literally go on pretty much as long as you want it to.
  20. My wife and I watched everything up until the current season (no cable, but it's on Netflix). The more we watched, the more intrenched we became. I just think it's very interesting how they make Don a not so nice person, yet for some reason, I was cheering for good things to happen to him by the end of the last season. I'm sad I can't watch it now...I guess I'll have to wait a while until it gets back up on Netflix.
  21. I haven't told my wife, but I want to go somewhere this summer (and perhaps next), but I'd suggest taking our 14 month old (assuming we go in July, that's how old she'd be). I'm not sure about traveling with a young one, but it has been done.
  22. We'd most likely be going in the summer, so we're over a year away from any potential trip. Part of me wants to take like 8 days to do Vancouver/Seattle or Seattle/Portland (probably not enough time to do all 3). The Utah parks are also appealing, as is Glacier. We have decided on a couple trips we will take once our family is a bit older, and Yosemite is on that list (as is another Yellowstone trip, which maybe we'll hit Glacier then). On a somewhat related note...I drive through Dubuque quite often, and have spent a weekend there. Believe it or not, it is a neat little city. They now have the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, and I remember there was a trolly tour of the downtown area which was sort of entertaining.
  23. My wife and I have decided next year, we are taking a vacation (without our daughter), so someplace in the U.S. we can fly to. Personally, I want to go someplace neither of us have ever been to before. That rules out... Vegas San Fran Colorado Arizona Florida Yellowstone Hawaii Black Hills Smoky Mountains St. Louis Chicago Cleveland My short list of destinations are Pacific Northwest, New York/New England, or Washington, DC (though I am planning a school trip to DC next school year). Where have you all gone where there is enough to see/do for 5-7 days? We are not stationary vacationers...we see as much as possible, so a beach destination is not appealing to us. We are also not "foodies," so we really don't care about cuisine. Thanks for the input.
  24. Don't get me wrong, I love the warm weather this winter, but it is really throwing things out of whack. Things are blooming now that normally bloom a month from now. Most trees have buds, much of my grass is turning green and growing, and we have flowers already. I worry what a prolonged freezing streak will do to the vegetation.
  25. Wasps love my house, and they are now out, looking for places to nest. They are out of reach of my spray that I have. This bugs me.
