  1. Hader just blew his last two saves and seven in all for 2020. He wasn't that far away from being pulled from the 9th inning- the best reliever in baseball.
  2. Melvin made plenty of those type of signings, though. In 2008, the big signings were an over-the-hill Trevor Hoffman and mediocre Braden Looper. He also made depth signings like Trot Nixon, Mike Lamb, Jorge Julio and, yes, Craig Counsell. In 2011, other than the big money deal on Aramis Ramirez, his signings included Nori Aoki, Brooks Conrad, Alex Gonzalez, Cesar Izturis and Corey Patterson. If anything, Melvin's legacy is making a few splashy moves, but otherwise he operated in much the same way that Stearns is now. I agree with you. Melvin and DS each made a few splashy moves; both do well on dumpster dives. Also, each has struggled with building a sustainable, top minor league system. Each has had competive teams. Most years with Melvin, like DS, we were in the playoff/ wild card hunt. Give Melvin a comparable payroll to keep/add talent to his core, and those early Braun Fielder teams might have a few more playoff appearances too. DS has a better track record than Melvin so far, of course. We are Very fortunate and thankful to have him. Yet, the gap between the two is not as great as some make it seem. Get to another playoffs this year or next and a WS in the next three...then we are talking significant differences in GM.

  4. If Melvin were making these bottom feeder moves, not to mention with a bottom 5 minor league system, there would be mass callings for his job. Now, it's ehhh, let's give DS the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps that is the way it should be with his track record.... just pointing out that GM actions can look very similar with two widely different reactions by the fan.
  5. McCarthy was and is a very good coach. Regardless of what he does in Dallas, he has multiple playoff wins and a Super Bowl. He gets his fair shame of blame, but it is to his credit that he did so well for so long in GB, briefly reviving Favre and helping Rodgers to be great. Also, to be fair, he needed to go in GB. Yet, so is professional sports. A new voice and a new, even if not better, way of doing work is needed to revive a team at times. I think we are seeing that now in GB.
  6. The numbers say that going for two is the better move. Go up by two scores. Worst case, you fail and they get a touchdown. They will just kick the extra point to tie (most times). Very little risk, with winning the game as the upside. Two scores to me still means the TD and the 2 point conversion. Worst case, NE beats you running one back and going for 2 if you leave it at 7, not 8. The upside I'll agree with you... game over if Tenn goes up by 9.
  7. Just kick the extra point...
  8. Way too many guys with no options in the pen... how is this a Stearns kind of bullpen?
  9. I'm all for even more revenue sharing, along with a salary floor. The payroll differences for teams would be less, which is needed, and the players union might actually like it.... more revenue being actually used on veteran MLB players... Convince me that the gap between the bigs and the smalls is getting closer, and The betterment of the game will follow in other areas too...
  10. If we include minors this one takes the cake: https://www.google.com/amp/s/deadspin.com/ball-bounces-off-centerfielders-glove-then-his-head-t-5832978/amp Routine catch....at least it should have been.
  11. Suter is in the minors but this one bests all of them....
  12. No way did 2.3 million fans come through the doors or buy tickets in 2016. Going to those games, we'd guess there was 20,000 people there and the announced figure was 30,000. Counting free tickets and giveaway tickets galore was prevalent to keeping the idea that Miller was still the place to be for sponsors and the General fan.
  13. I think most Brewers fans care about Beer. And having fun at the ballpark. And winning is up there, yes. A lot of casual Brewers fans have their favorites. They love yelling “Moose!!!”, they love Hernan because he can play multiple positions. They love Jesus Aguillar because he looks like Shrek and hits bombs. Etc... the players that are colorful characters become part of the daily fun of being a fan, in between beers. As long as a winning team keeps their superstar (Yelich), fans will adopt a new cast of characters as favorites while the beer keeps flowing and the team keeps winning. No, Brewers fans want to win first. Then it's having fun at the ballpark. Take away the winning, or being relevant in playoff races, the crowds will go too. It's no longer the place to be when you are a 90 loss team, and most find somewhere else to spends their money. Oh, they will still come to Miller Park, just less. Actually your last paragraph says it well.... the beer is dependent on the winning and winning players.
  14. So give us a list of these 3B. Who are the most likely candidates?
  15. Your're coming around with Sogard... good to see. Next step is a tough one, though: Sogard> Villar Nice to see DS seeing it my way. This GM has potential! Go Brew!
  16. Yes, who cares what Braun wants... He's only moved everywhere they've ever asked him to and has said that he would be open to other positions to help the team. BTW, he played in 140+ games last year and started like 115 while being their 3rd best bat, but yes, screw Braun. Counsell cares, I would think. He wants to keep the locker room culture similar to these last two or three years. Braun ultimately will be getting less playing time than what he is used to getting, even with all his off days. Braun moved to 1B to get MORE playing time. Now he will be moving positions and getting even less, presumably. It's not an issue now, or as far as we know, but it will be interesting to see how this develops.
  17. So he plays there 4 or 5 times a week? What is the plan with Braun?
  18. Roy Howell?
  19. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln..... If you could divide that 10 million differently, just for this year, I think most would. Perhaps Santana at 3 or 4 million with 5 or 6 million more to spend elsewhere (3B/1B) would fill more gaps on this team. With this move, we all have to presume that Braun is playing substantially less in LF and quite a bit more at 1B. Is a lot of Braun at 1B that much defensively different than a little of a back-up like Santana in the outfield?
  20. With all due respect, I don't believe the Brewers are giving this guy $10 million/season to sit in favor of Ben Gamel. Unless we acquire a 1B that forces Braun into considerable outfield starts .. Garcia should be our everyday LF. Unless you mean Gamel will split time with him as a defensive replacement ... then fine. I'll agree with you a bit about Gamel. He's a bat off the bench and a defensive replacement. Then they are giving this guy 10 million for multiple years so that Braun can play less. So be it, but it seems like an awkward situation- Braun even less in the OF and more at 1B.
  21. The Brewers must value him as a breakout player.... They wouldn't spend this much on a multi-year deal for what he has done in a typical year so far, especially with other similar players in FA. The injury issues with him are also concerning, especially since every outfielder we have has had injury issues last season, except Gamel. Many are saying here that Garcia is our starting LF next year and is not a platoon. That would make Braun a platoon and or 1B candidate. I can't really see either situation right now. Braun will want to play 4 or 5 days a week, and he wasn't crazy about playing 1B. I just don't see how this works out without ticking somebody off. Not that I care if Braun is ticked, but my guess CC does.
  22. Weird criteria, no he doesn't. Agreed. Ben Gamel had a .710 OPS as our fourth outfielder last year. Even if Garcia can put up an .800 OPS this deal is worth it. This adds a talented bat while also bringing depth and stability to the OF group. Not to mention the possibility of a breakout season after what he has done in Tampa. There are several other outfielders still out there that could platoon for far less $, and we wouldn't have to give them a multi-year deal. Some could be had for a one year deal, and then we would still have their arby rights. Even Domingo Santana's offensive numbers aren't that much worse, even with questionable defense, than Garcia. Seems like an overspend unless he plays like a borderline All-Star. Even then, if he does play really well, my guess is that he initially will be splitting time with Gamel somewhat.
  23. Feels like we have been saving nickels and cutting corners so that we can splurge on something, and this move was it. He needs to be an All Star consideration for this move to look good.
  24. Who is lining up to trade for Cain? We couldn't give him away right now with that contract.
  25. I think people are over-inflating how the expanded rosters helped the Brewers in September. Most of those guys they brought up barely played. A few of the pitchers got some mop up innings, but for the most part they deployed the guys they always did, just in a bit of a different fashion. Those mop up innings allowed others to pitch in meaningful positions.... I'm thinking of Jackson, in particular
