  1. "There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch. " That being said...I'm for the NL.
  2. I recall walking into an elementary school classroom and seeing a young boy in a generic sports team jersey complete with number, not unlike something you'd see here, and the team he seemed to be playing for was "Alcoholic". I laughed alone.
  3. I'll spare any of you interested in listening to the Japanese broadcast by translating what they will be saying. Japan has the ball, OH MY GOD, Japan has the ball...it's Japan...with the ball.....yes, yes, YES, JAPAN!!! All the while they are simply passing the ball around deep in their own territory without thoughts of making a forward move. Japan is my second home, and I love the place, but I have a really hard time cheering for them. I'll be over there watching the games with my in-laws and I've promised myself I'll cheer with them but I fear after 30 seconds I'll feel compelled to cheer against their announcers.
  4. Japan nets three vs England! Sadly, two were of the own goal variety. I've made a note to write a letter to Japan explaining that own goals are not actually preferable.
  5. This was a pretty humorous comparison of World Cup teams to US sports teams. http://theunlikelyfan.blogspot.com/ The Brew Crew make mention. South Korea, England, France, and Uruguay's comparison are pretty funny.
  6. Very excited as the finale should be good. I wonder what kind of ratings this will pull. Certainly, it is going to be up there with Seinfeld, Dallas, Mash as one of the hightest watched shows ever. After this, I'm done. I'm out. Im done with TV. This was the last of things I'm willing to watch. Luddite's rejoice!
  7. Anybody else getting excited? This is truly the world's greatest sporting event....even if you are not a soccer/football fan you have to appreciate the way it captivates the entire world. I know a fair bit about soccer but am by no means a fanatic. I'll be rooting for the US ( I don't in all sports), Japan, and whomever England plays. I'm hoping for the US to advance out of their group with anything past that being gravy. Japan, sadly, is gonna get smoked but I'm hoping they at least win one since I'll be over there during the games. England....meh....I just hope they lose so my friends in Scotland can have a laugh. I was hoping some of the resident experts could chime in with some thoughts....and perhaps some links to their favorite soccer sites/previews.
  8. Just finished a fantastic book called Country Driving by Peter Hessler. Currently, reading a memoir of sorts by Haruki Marukami called What I Talk About When I Talk About Running.
  9. Screw Texas, let's get serious about expansion and merge with the Pac-10 making a new super conference that will dominate the world. The Big-Pac.
  10. With 96 teams even the gophers could make the tourney 11 straight years! Er...maybe if it is 128.
  11. I also like the repeated clips of the Twins. I'm sure they are getting tired of the dome and really looking for a new stadium
  12. Wow...I just watched the Jimmy on Jay Leno clip. That was brutal. I like Jimmy a whole lot more now.
  13. Maybe if NBC changed Last Call with Carson Daily to First Call and put if before the local news, then had Jimmy Fallon do a 15 minute warm up for the Tonight Show, and then had Jay wear red on every day but Tuesday this would work out well.
  14. I'll second that. Craig is fantastic. I was, still am, a big Conan fan but Craig has surpassed him as the best out there.
  15. Bobby Valentine's thoughts "I made a statement last year that my team that won the Japanese championship could have played against the [2005 World Series champion] White Sox," he says, "and some baseball people said, 'Oh, hell, the talent level doesn't match up. Bobby's just talking.' My statement was made in the belief that we were playing at the highest level of any team I'd ever seen play. I knew that without a doubt. We didn't have as much talent -- I never said we did, and I never will -- but with our heart and the way we played, the way we built as a team and built individually during that season, we could have beaten any team in the world."
  16. i've had good success with http://www.rentalcarmomma.com/
  17. With a pocket-doppler you could find the absolute best dea!
  18. MTV is still a channel? who knew? I figured those shows ended around 1999.
  19. Nobody will ever be worse than Joe Theismann.
  20. October is fast approaching with an abundance of emotions. There may be no playoff drive but I think I will be similarily on pins-and-needles this September.
  21. $100 needed for a a stunningly inadequate educational system as opposed supplementing a desired entertainment option.I love the crew but I prefer my taxes support other things than the business of sports.
  22. So, will Correia or Suppan start Game 1 of the NLDS?
  23. Balboa Park was worth a few minutes and the drive down towards Mexico on I5 and back up 75 (the crazy bridge) is kinda nice. Old Towne was not worth the time. We enjoyed driving up the coast a bit (20minutes or so) one morning and having breakfast at Pipers Cafe. A local friend sent us there and it was great. There is also some state parks on the beach in that area that we walked around. http://www.pipescafe.com/Home.htm we went to the location in Cardiff by the Sea
