  1. That's a fair point... if it does indicate the start of a trend towards Jerry Jones-ing as the 'owner/president,' then I'm on board with this argument.
  2. Again, how much of this is reality, vs. complete speculation? The changes were made to the structure last year, following a year where they missed the playoffs for the first time in forever mainly due to their HOF QB being injured for much of the year, the recent opening of the Titletown district project, and a year removed from the NFC Championship game. How hot could his seat have possibly been? If this continues for a couple of additional years and/or LaFleur ends up being a bad hire that he made? Sure, he's likely facing the door or a reduced role.
  3. A structure can be weird, but still be effective, no? And 'front office culture issues' seems a bit more assertively negative. I don't think there has been any indication from anyone in the organization or NFL that there are issues.... it's just an issue brought up by fans, probably just because it IS 'weird.'
  4. I am very eager for you to elaborate on what you mean by this?
  5. But why put yourself into a position to give up prospect capital in that situation when there are a number of currently available options that only cost money? Can't a short-term 2B FA signing be useful to the team as a bench bat if Hiura does work out?
  6. the guy has batted over .300 in 3 of his last 4 seasons. and has the highest OBP of available 2nd baseman...i know in 2019 we're all about advanced metrics and what not, but what ever happened to just getting on base a ton and extending innings and rolling through the order! when did that go out of style! give me all the advanced metrics you want, but a team full of guys who get on base at a clip of .320 or better 1-7 in the lineup is going to win PLENTY of games and contend for a World Series! That's well and good, but if you look at his home/away splits.... he's a poor hitter away from Coors. Anyone signing him and expecting him to replicate those numbers elsewhere would be really, really disappointed come January 2020.
  7. But even if you exclude his monster 2017, he's basically been at or above a .700 OPS every other year of his career since 2013. I haven't looked recently to see what our 2B output was in 2017 aggregated, but I'd be surprised if it surpassed that number offensively. Add in what would be good defense at 2B, I'd think he'd be a solid acquisition even if he never hits like his outlier year again. Harrison is a different story, if for no other reason than he's older and less likely to sustain/rebound from a bad 2018.
  8. What if Hiura struggles to adjust to MLB hitting? What if he doesn't hit well enough in AAA in April/May to justify a call-up? We're still pinning a LOT of hopes on a rookie that may not be ready to be thrust into the middle of a playoff race.
  9. Just FYI as you're new, stuff like the above sentence isn't a good idea here.
  10. As with anything, it depends on the cost. For the Saints' 1st? I'm completely on board. For a 1 & a 2? Nope.
  11. Great news! I'm sure we're all thrilled that he'll be able to get in a full spring prior to potentially logging real innings in April.
  12. Clancy, I think the argument is that if the Brewers are to have payroll flexibility going forward, they likely need to move Thames' salary to do so.
  13. Yeah, that $14.5 mil cap credit is the thing that makes this potentially real. Eating 21 million vs. essentially 7 million while gaining a 1st or whatever makes the latter seem more easy to stomach.
  14. I can't find anything on Kratz's contract saying it's a split contract. I don't think it is. He is also out of options, not sure if he's ever been outrighted. Good point... I looked back and the bulk of the money is only guaranteed if he's on the ML roster, so I assumed that there was a roster loophole that they could use there, but I may have been mistaken.
  15. I'd have said no way a year ago, but considering that Moose reportedly is looking at contract to stick around, who knows? I'd think the Brewers would have a lot of interest if the terms stay relatively short.
  16. Tom H. suggests here that it is their third that they'll give up: https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/mlb/brewers/2019/01/09/brewers-agree-18-25-million-deal-catcher-yasmani-grandal/2533859002/
  17. IIRC, Kratz had a split deal, so it would be logical for depth to have him break camp at AAA. I'd be stunned if this was done with the intention of moving Pina for a Grandal/Kratz combo.
  18. Don't they still have their 1st and 2nd, or did I miss something?
  19. To be fair, the Cook/Bennett situation was universally praised as a win for the Packers at the time. Unfortunately, you shouldn't consider a player's intangibles in a vacuum, apparently. Enough said.
  20. I think everyone gets far too hung up on these rumors, if for no other reason than we're all desperate for news during this dead period of the offseason. The Brewers kick the tires on everybody that's available, just to do their due diligence. They come up all the time in rumors and 95% of them have led to nothing. I'm sure they've talked with the Giants. But I'm also certain that there is a price the Brewers are willing to pay for him... what Morosi speculates they've talked about or what a package would look like doesn't mean that's what will end up happening. Far more likely, IMO, that a more modest deal is reached, or no deal happens at all.
  21. I've said it elsewhere, but with the extra 1st they're really set to fill 5-6 roster holes this year, and that doesn't include depth picks from their 3rd and beyond, including the extra 4th, which is where Thompson, Wolf, etc. really excelled during much of their time.
  22. Fair enough. I'd say the Brewers could offset concerns about that with the QO possibility as well, though.
  23. I really do too. I think this move was the first of a very big offseason for the future of the franchise.
  24. Generally, the teams that would be interested in acquiring him at the deadline are the ones successful enough to not be on a no-trade list.
  25. Usually that leads to one of two things- rolling with a guy that has control (ala the Marlins and Realmuto), or you come back to the table later on with a more realistic goal in your asking price. The Giants are going nowhere this year, and they have zero reason to hold on to Bumgarner other than maybe to hope he has more value over a half season at the deadline than he does now, which is hit or miss. I'd give up Ray for him, but probably not much else. He'd undeniably be an upgrade in the rotation, though.
