  1. I am not about to get into a hard bidding war for the guy though. Exactly the problem with attempting to solve our rotation issues with free agency this year- the good ones (even the ones like Harden with issues) will go for top dollar, because there's just not a lot of them.
  2. What an abysmal season for Bush this year. Yep. If him and Parra had come even reasonably close to their projections on the year, the Brewers would likely be right on pace to win the 85-ish games you'd have projected them to win coming into the year.
  3. None of those three are going to get huge raises. Fielder is only get a $4M raise as well. But 4 million + even 1 million per for the other three is 7 million, plus you have to replace Cam like Al said. That pretty much eats up the 10 million 'savings' right there.
  4. Maybe that will finally get him a start! And follows that up with a horrible play on a ball to third.
  5. What was this guy getting a lifetime achievement award for? He hasn't made a relevant movie in 35 years. He won the Best Director Oscar just 6 years ago for The Pianist, for the record.
  6. I'm sure he's spent his signing bonus on supporting drug using friends and members of his entourage. I don't think this is anything you can be even remotely sure of.
  7. Oscar winning director Roman Polanski was finally arrested by Swiss police today on a 32-year old rape charge which caused him to flee to France. Nice to see that this is finally going to be sorted out in one way or another. I had no idea that Sharon Tate was his wife... http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/27/zurich.roman.polanski.arrested/index.html
  8. You can justify it by saying it's for a good credit rating, but if you don't use credit, then why do you need a good rating? And again, 99.9% of the people in this country can't pay cash for their home, so almost everyone needs a good credit rating. And JJHardy is 100% correct- there are great opportunities out there for those that have great credit. I bought a living room set last spring at 0% interest for a year. I could write a check today to pay the whole thing off, but why would I do that when my checking account makes 3.5% APR? It's like free money and would be silly to pay for it up front in that situation.
  9. But yes, we will take out a loan when we buy a house, then proceed to pay it off as fast as we can. And at that time, you'll have to acknowledge how you need a good credit score even when you're buying something you can afford. And as mtrebs mentioned, applications for a lot of things require you to have a credit history. Heck, they seriously checked my credit score when I signed up for my last cell phone plan.
  10. Credit cards aren't all bad. My wife and I use ours for many things in order to get more bonus points. A great point. I use my CC to pay off a lot of my utilities like Cell Phone/cable and things like gas, and get 3% cash back while paying the card off completely each month. Society wants us to have a good credit score. Why do you need a credit score, if you're paying for things that you can afford! You paid cash for all of your homes?
  11. Do NOT roll your credit cards into another loan. What is the different in interest rates between your big CC and the Landmark loan? To me, it seems wise to get the CC balance to a lower rate, assuming you can't pay the whole thing off in just a couple of months.
  12. I think you need to ask yourself - is the return on my investment significantly greater than the interest rate on my loan? It's not only about the return on his investment- as he said, if he doesn't take the loan, he uses his emergency fund, which is a bad and dangerous idea.
  13. But this is like the fifth time Haudricourt has mentioned that it's likely that Melvin will pick up the option and McCalvy has mentioned it a couple times as well. They have to be getting that from someone. I think Haudricourt also publicly stated multiple times that they wouldn't keep Hardy down to add an extra year of service time....
  14. If the alternative is paying for school with your only emergency money, then taking the loan is probably the way to go. If something happens when you graduate, you have normal repayment terms. If you don't take it and something happens in the next year, you're in a much worse situation.
  15. Draw play Post Pattern These two are pretty easy to explain: draw plays start as a fake pass, followed by a late handoff designed to 'draw' the defensive line into the pass protection up the field from the run. Post patterns are simply receivers running up the field and then running for the goal post.
  16. And also, doesn't Soup have a no-trade clause? His no trade clause only covered the first two years.
  17. What I am wondering is why not just let Cooper finish the year? It is never a good thing to be fired, but to not be given the courtesy of at least finishing the year this late into the season. With no chance of post-season play, it seems like the right thing to do imo. Yeah, that's the really questionable thing about this- what in the world do they lose by letting him manage the last 10 days?
  18. Does Fox re-air shows? I just noticed my DVR not recording House, and remembered I deleted the series recording after it was randomly recording repeat episodes over the summer instead of just the new ones. EDIT: Yay for online streaming episodes!
  19. There's no guaranty that any player won't fall off. But McGehee's earned a major league job. I don't think there's anyone that thinks Casey doesn't belong here or hasn't earned a major league job, there just has to be the acknowledgment that Casey is more likely to have a dramatic fall off than your typical everyday player. Some people here get red in the face complaining about Melvin not trading guys like Turnbow, Hall, Hardy, etc before they fell off in hindsight, but with Casey the Brewers have the opportunity to trade him at a potential high point in value if they feel this is an outlier year. That's going to be a huge story and huge decision for the team to make this offseason.
  20. What about all the previous minor league seasons by McGehee where he never broke .800 OPS. I still think there is a good chance this season by McGehee was an outlier. Yeah, I think it's extremely odd that people that constantly say 'beware of the small sample' seem unable to acknowledge the danger of relying on an outlier season.
  21. Had the chance to listen to Sgt. Pepper's the whole way through the other night, and they've really done an amazing job here. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was almost jaw-dropping in the remastered version. And the earlier stuff was surprising as well, as Pogo mentioned. Really a nice reminder of how great an album Hard Day's Night was, considering that it gets lost in the context of SPLHCB, Revolver, Rubber Soul, etc.
  22. I would give him two more years if we're not really close then it's time to move on. I think that is very fair regardless of how people feel about Melvin. I'm thrilled with what he has done and would be pretty angry if they let him go this offseason like some seem to want, but if we take another step back in 2010, I think it's very fair to be exploring other options in a year or two.
  23. Brewers at 2B hasn't been a problem. Thanks to a very astute waiver claim, re-signing a player that many people didn't want re-signed, and making a great trade that many people were unhappy was made at the time. (Bringing the thread back to the actual topic at hand, instead of 'strikeouts are bad or not')
  24. I tend to agree, Rillo. I know there were a few of us saying that while it was probably time for someone different, that the people calling for Yost's head would be stunned when the next manager did a lot of the same things and would have them calling for his head this season as well.
  25. I think it's more a case of seeing whether Casey can continue his numbers to bolster his potential trade value or see if the organization thinks this is a fluke or not. What they do with Casey is going to be one of the biggest decisions of the off season. Yes, Gamel needs to get some AB's, but they need to be certain of what they're going to do with a guy that is having a Rookie of the Year type campaign as well.
